B. Lesson Proper

1. Presentation

Tell the students what is complement.

Complement is anything that helps to make something else complete.

2. Discussion

1. Complement is a word or group of words that completes the meaning of a verb.

A subject and a verb often need a complement in order for the meaning of a
sentence to be completed. Note that the following sentences sound incomplete even
though they include a subject and a verb.

Mark Bryan told________.

This guitar sounds_______.

1. Verb complement completes the meaning of the action verb.

a. DIRECT OBJECT

A direct object answers the question what? or whom? after an action word.

The subject of a sentence usually performs the action indicated by the verb. That
action may be directed toward or may be received by someone or something-the direct
object. Nouns, pronouns, or words acting as nouns may serve as direct object. Only
transitive verbs have direct object.

Structure: S+V+DO
a. Examples:
1. Rick needs money. (Rick needs what?)
2. Lorenz saw us at the game. (Lorenz saw whom?)
3. Juaquin explained what you meant. (Juaquin explained what?)
4. Franc throws the ball. (Franc throws what?)
5. Chris rented a small beach bungalow. (Chris rented what?)

Like other sentence parts, direct objects may be compound.

1. Javen needs money and a job. (Javen needs what?)

2. INDIRECT OBJECT
An indirect object answers the question to whom? for whom? to what? or for
what? after an action verb.

A sentence may have an indirect object only if it has a direct object. The indirect
object will always come between the verb and the direct object, never after the
preposition. Indirect objects are usually nouns or pronouns.

Structure: S+V+IO+DO
a. Examples:
1. That noise gave me a headache. (That noise gave headache to whom?)
2. Cyra lent her brother some money. (Cyra lent some money to whom?)
3. Hannah bought her car new brakes. (Hannah bought new brakes for what?)
4. Rhys asked Abegail a question. (Rhys asked a question to whom?)
5. Zedrick gave her the book. (Zedrick gave the book to whom?)

2
Indirect objects may be compound.

1. Michael lent his brother and sister money. (Michael lent money to whom?)
