Uses and Gratifications Theory


Uses and gratification theory seeks to understand why people seek out the media that they do and what they use
it for. UGT differs from other media effect theories in that it assumes that individuals have power over their
media usage, rather than positioning individuals as passive consumers of media. According to uses and
gratification theory, it is not so people make use of the media for their specific needs. This theory can be said to
have a user/audience-centered approach. There are several needs and gratification for people they are
categorized into five categories.

 Cognitive needs

 Affective needs

 Personal Integrative needs

 Social Integrative needs

 Tension free needs

Cognitive needs: People use Music for learning information, to get motivation etc., According to the article
some of them thinks listening to music is like listening the mother's heartbeat and her choice of music, while
this is not common to all only certain people thinks music is a time pass need, each person have a different
need. In order to acquire knowledge and information from music you will listen to different music to satisfy the
cognitive need.

Affective needs: People use music to satisfy their emotional needs. Emotional fulfillment and pleasure people
get by listening operas, rock, pop and other genres in respect to their music taste. People read the lyrics and
relate it with their life and feel the emotions and meanings the lyrics of a particular music. If the music can male
people sad or laugh.

Personal Integrative needs: People establish their status,, strength, power, etc. which is done with the use of
music. so people listen different music and assure themselves that they have a status in society for e.g. people
get to improve their status by listing to English music, so the people change their life style and music helps
them to do so for their self-esteem.

Social Integrative needs: For social interaction now a days people do not seems to have social gathering in
weekend, instead they do such social interaction using music. People also use media to increase their social
interactions by getting topics to talk with the near and dear ones about music awards, artist, new songs etc. For
example is you may not have listen to a particular song but because your friend has know the song, you also
start listing to it so that you have common topics for discussion.

Tension free needs: People used to listen to music as a means of peace and to relieve from tension. For
example People tend to relax listening to songs for satisfying their need for entertainment there by relaxing
from all the tension and stress. People might have various tensions in life which they do not want to face, so
take help of music to escape from it.
