Assignment III
Structural Design of a Bridge
A bridge is being planned on National Highway 1 across a dry river at Delhi, with standard
pedestrian way on either side. The bridge rests on reasonably stiff and strong soil with no
possibility of liquefaction. The finished surface of the roadway on the bridge is 14m above the
natural ground level. The Soil Report of the site gives the following data:
(a) Soil properties:
Safe bearing capacity 250 kN/m2;
c=0 and φ=35°;
Modulus of Sub-grade Reaction 60,000 kN/ m3;
(b) The proposed depth of shallow foundation for the bridge is given as at least 5 m below
natural ground level; and
(c) Height of water table: 4 m below ground level.
Structural design shall be performed of the bridge considering all expected hazards at the
location. Five options are available as the structural system of the bridge (Table 1). Any other
required design input data, conforming to relevant Indian codes and guidelines, may be used
after consultation with the course instructors. The expected deliverables are given in Table 2
with time-line.
