Part #4: Proposal

Proposal Summary (What is a brief description of my idea?):
I am proposing an educational program that includes sexual education that is new and
improved and can be incorporated into schools, starting in the Durango community.

I want to incorporate more into the lessons that are given, kids should be leanring about
consent, sexual assault and more. I think its important that students learn more than the
basics and it should take a lot longer than it does to teach the curriculum.

Audience (Who is my target audience? Who are the decision-makers?)

Animas High School teachers,Sean and Libby, Planned Parenthood, AHS students.

Rationale (Why should they accept my proposal?)

I think it is important that students, especially in high school, learn how to handle
dangerous situations around sexual harassment, violence etc. I think teaching strategies
and learning about the rape culture and why people partipate in sexually assult and why
that is wrong, and all the consequence that come with that. After learning through reseach
that I have done around rape culture, I have learned that a lot of the people who participate
are taught and brought up certain ways, they are taught about power, aggression and a lot
of things around and about manhood.

If we were able to teach certain things in school through the sexual education programs
and teachers, it could help prevent young boys and girls to grow up and become part of the
rape culture. I think the number of people who have been affected by sexual assault could
decrease with my curriculum. It is definitely important to learn about all of the factors that
play into sexual intercourse and that can include the really negative but realistic scenarios
that need to be taught rigorously to students.

Curriculum Outline (What exactly am I proposing?)

I am proposing an experiential education curriculum around sexual education taught by
AHS teachers that would run from February-May! 3 hours/week.

● February Lesson Plan: Introduction and Safe Sex

❏ This can include an introduction to what sexual intercourse is and the ways
in which people can be safe with it.
❏ STD’s will be introduced and talked about deeply; how to avoid them, how to
treat them.
❏ Reproductive System.
❏ Pregnancy.
❏ Birth control.
● March Lesson Plan: Gender Stereotypes, Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and
Healthy Relationships.
❏ Knowing yourself and your feelings about sex and being your most
comfortable self before sexual intercourse.
❏ What comes with a healthy relationship: Scenarios and examples.
❏ Gender Identity and what that means and make people feel comfortable with
themselves.

● April Lesson Plan: Constent, Safety, Rape Culture and Real Life scenerios.
❏ What is consent and how does it work and not work. Give examples. Act
things out in an appropriate way.
❏ How to be safe in certain situations and what is right and not right.
❏ What is rape cuture and how can we help and break it down.
❏ What are real things that happen in college, at home, with friends, etc.

● May Lesson Plan: Reflection and Test on knowledge.

❏ Conclusions and revisions to understand what was learned and what needs
to be remembered.
❏ Complete test on knowledge from the curriculum that was learned to make
sure it gets ingrained in students heads.
