CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Wisdom is the most important essence of an individual and is enhanced through

education. Education is recognized as the foundation of each individual in order to

develop its wisdom. With its help, an individual is given an opportunity to gain

awareness and knowledge regarding the timely issues of society, and resolve them

promptly. In the Philippines, education system is incorporated in the school where

children at ages three (3) and older are molded to become knowledgeable citizens of

the society. From preparatory, nursery, kindergarten, elementary, high-school, and

college, a Filipino child has everything he or she needs to learn. One of the primary

sources where a student can find information is books. In gathering information

through books, they read compiled knowledge in a specific field of study such as

Mathematics, Science, English, or Social Studies. As time goes by, there has been a

dramatic change in the education sector.

The arrival of the latest technology has been one of the main factors of the

change. Lack of enthusiasm and the complicated lengths you have to go through to

acquire information is a big problem. And the most effective solution is to lean in the

evolving technology to keep things interesting and easier. From the standard medium

used like books, our system slowly transitioned in using the internet. Where numerous

scholarly writings is found and can be used as a valid reference. Scouring for new ideas
and point of view is effortless. The development opened the minds of students and

teachers. Since the growth, teachers have been exploring. Interactive tools attract

students in finding new information. Use of engaging animations, power point, video

presentations, and PDF in a classroom is now classified as being both effective and

hassle-free.

With just a mouse click on the computer and even on the cell phone you can

read your lessons without weighing your back on the amount of books you need to

carry. But, some schools in the Philippines still do not approve these interactive

teaching tools because of the dangers that technology can bring to a student's mind,

Ramon Magsaysay (Cubao) High School is one of the institutions that assure this kind of

strategy.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The main purpose of this research is to determine the students' impression of

teaching using interactive tools in the Ramon Magsaysay (Cubao) High School, whether

it would be effective in the learning of Grade Ten Students. This research will answer

the following questions:

1. What are the interactive tools used by teachers in teaching?

2. What is the difference between using the interactive tools and the traditional way

of teaching in Ramon Magsaysay Cubao High School?

3. What are the reasons why is it more effective to use the interactive tools in

teaching?

4. How do these interactive tools help in the learning of Grade 10 students?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Findings in this study could be useful to students, teachers, school administrators

and curriculum planners, and future researchers.

Students. The result of the study will be useful to the students to get further

knowledge on using the Interactive Tools as an alternative way of teaching rather than

the traditional way. This program can be effective and efficient to disseminate

information during class hours.

Teachers. The evaluation study could prove that students are more interested

in Interactive Tools and it will be a great help for the teachers to get used of this new

way of teaching. This could improve the performance and behavior of the students

through academics.

School Administrators and Curriculum planners. The outcome of this study

may provide basis for maintaining or upgrading the expansion of teaching skills that will

suits the needs of both teachers and learners to achieve quality education and to

increase collaboration among schools implementing the use of Interactive Tools.

Future Researchers. The result of this study will provide other researchers

who are interested in undertaking future studies along the same topic with additional
inputs and references. Furthermore, this will also provide a concrete basis of lesson

study processes and its effect on the education system.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This research focuses on examining the use of interactive tools as effective

teaching methods for students learning from Ramon Magsaysay (Cubao) High School.

Also included is how they can keep pace with the classroom discussion and the way

their teachers’ teach. At the same time, students spend their time studying through

Interactive Tools.

In affirming this, grade 10 students of Ramon Magsaysay (Cubao) High School

should be investigated. In order to properly support the data, it is only necessary to

gather information through surveys, consolidated information from the internet,

libraries, relevant articles on the topic discussed and some leading papers.

The researchers believed that this problem is appropriate and timely. It is good

to have this kind of study to deal with the ever changing times and problems that we

are experiencing today.

DEFINITION OF TERMINOLOGIES

Interactive Tools

An interactive tool is a way to increase engagement with a target audience by

allowing them to interact with the page itself. For example, a medical information

website may offer an interactive food calculator to help users track food intake and

exercise.

COMPUTER

A computer is a machine or device that performs processes, calculations and

operations based on instructions provided by a software or hardware program.

PDF (Portable Document Format)

PDF (Portable Document Format) is a file format that has captured all the

elements of a printed document as an electronic image that you can view, navigate,

print, or forward to someone else. PDF files are created using Adobe Acrobat , Acrobat

Capture, or similar products.

TRADITIONAL METHOD OF TEACHING

Traditional method of teaching is when a teacher directs students to learn

through memorization and recitation techniques thereby not developing their critical

thinking problem solving and decision making skills (Sunal et al 1994) while modern or

constructivist approach to teaching involves a more interacting.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Based on the gathered literature, many studies have also been conducted about

the different types of teaching and the use of Interactive tools. Most of the information

collected was the views of various researchers on modern and effective teaching

methods and the positive and negative impact on student behavior in all aspects of

learning.

LOCAL LITERATURE

Based on Templado (2008) in his study entitled Classroom management and

teaching styles of ZNAC academic and technical instructors: It's effect on student

performance, "The classroom management includes control of its physical conditions as

well as the materials of instruction. An ingenious teacher can make even a dullest room

in the building attractive, cozy, and comfortable, subject of course to facilities available

to him and within capabilities. " ,This means that a teacher's manner or manner of

organizing the room he or she is teaching involves his or her role in managing the

classroom. For example, a teacher who teaches Filipino subjects may place pictures of

popular country writers and colorful visual aids on the walls that discuss the subject to

further encourage students to become actively engaged in discussion. "It is only

through effective classroom management that this problem on student discipline can be
minimized and teaching-learning process maximized.", Templado added. To put it

simply, a student's attitude and goals depend on how a teacher handles the physical

appearance of his classroom. Showing an enthusiasm on the teaching of a teacher in

the classroom will surely contribute to the growing interest of students in the subject

area which will eventually lead to their gaining knowledge.

According to the literature written by Dr. Angel O. Pesirla (2008) on Learning

Styles vis-à-vis Teaching styles, "What is really important in using an appropiate

teaching style, or styles, is the channeling of these cognitive factors that compositely

make up a total learner. help the teacher understand that many styles operate in one

person, thus, recognizing and understanding the multiplicity of cognitive variables active

in the learning process and thus, make judgments about individual learners, meeting

them where they are and providing them with the best possible opportunities for

learning. ", this means that the teaching styles of a teacher has a huge impact on a

student's learning.

However, a teacher needs to be fully aware of the linking of factors that can

have a positive effect on a student's learning so that he or she can fully achieve the

desired knowledge. This is because every student has a different kind of teaching

system that they favorable, and this should be the most studied of the teachers in order

to create an effective teaching system where all teaching factors that needs to be taken

into account.

FOREIGN LITERATURE
“There is some evidence that teaching styles can help to interpret the influence

of teachers on student achievement” (Aitkin & Zuzovsky, 1994; Ebmeier & Good, 1979).

Each method of teaching the teacher affects the student to his or her expected dignity.

“Teachers who constantly review their perceptions and their supporting basics

increase their ability to communicate properly with a wide variety of students” (Capra,

1996). Insight reinforces communication between a teacher and the student. A teacher

needs to expand his or her thinking and be open to the knowledge he or she needs in

the classroom.

“The key to maintaining good discipline is to establish a good relationship with

pupils based on mutual respect and rapport” (Cooper and McIntyre, 1996; Morgan and

Morris, 1999; Pollard et al, 2000). It also shows that the relationship reinforces the

teacher's effectiveness in his or her teaching.

According to Joy et al. (2016) entitled The Impact of Mobile Devices for Learning

in Higher Education Institutions: Nigerian Universities Case Study, “The use of these

mobile technologies in learning improves accessibility, efficiency and quality of learning

by facilitating access to education resources and services. The capability of m-learning

technologies to present learning materials, not only in text, but also graphics, video and

sound, and easy access via many different devices further enhances the interest of the

learners. ” The use of mobile technologies demonstrates effective teaching

methodology because it provides quick search for information and its wide sharing of

information.
According to Arsham Hossien's (1996) on Interactive Education: Impact of the

Internet on Learning & Teaching, “In its capacity as a tool, the Internet is but a ripple

on the surface of our educational institutions. In its capacity as intellectual challenge, it

is without precedent in the educational history of mankind. ” The internet has

expanded teaching methods. It has many resources that enable innovative teaching

methods.

“The marginal implementation of ICT-based teaching tools in educational

contexts can be attributed to the insufficient technical knowledge and skills of teachers;

however, numerous studies have shown that even the beliefs and attitudes that

teachers have in regard to these methods have a decisive influence on whether and

how they will be used in class ”(Hermans, Tondeur, van Braak, & Valcke, 2008; Wang,

Ertmer, & Newby, 2004 Ertmer, 2005). Teachers who used technology as their teaching

method can vary their opinions on the quality of school work management.

“The presence of visual elements in today's teaching and learning is increasing

as the integration of images and visual presentations with text in textbooks,

instructional manuals, classroom presentations, and computer interfaces broadens”

(Stokes, 2014) As media coverage grows using pictures and creative ways of presenting

information, the level of appreciation of visual elements in teaching as well as in a

student's learning also increases. As a result, creative ways of teaching a teacher as

well as having the learning tools that the pictures provide continue to be a key element

of a student's effective learning.

According to the poet Siminodes, "Words are the images of things" (Benson, p.

141); Feelings or observations that are not reflected in the pictures can be conveyed by

words. Because words seem infinite and everything in the world has the same meaning

in the form of words, it is easier and more convenient to convey the idea of something

by using proper words, such as Aristotle says, “without image, thinking is impossible”

(Benson, p. 141). Images are representations of things that cannot be easily conveyed

by words, or which have more meaning than words that can match their meaning. A

photograph with the right elements is enough to convey the idea that one wants to

express without using even a single word. In fact, the loss of image in the process of

thinking can actually lead to a lack or lack of knowledge about an idea. If an image has

elements that are outside the scope of a person's typical thinking, he or she will be

required to use careful thinking that will further develop his or her mental capacity.

“Characters in alphabets began as pictures with meaning” (West, 1997). “These

symbols represent a man-made language with no distinction between words and

pictures, just as musical notes convey the language of music.” (Stokes, 2014) Symbols

used in teaching have particular meaning that is unknown to both words and

photographs, but with a direct connection to education. Although it is not always aware

of a word or a picture, it clearly details an idea or topic of a lesson a teacher teaches

his or her students.

“Our analysis of students learning difficulties revealed that the students who

developed good visual representations of the changing data structures gained a better

understanding of searching algorithms” (Naser, 2008). Compared to other students, a

student with more knowledge and skills in applying knowledge or data to a

representation of visual elements is more capable of understanding his or her learning

which results in achieving his or her knowledge of a subject.
