Besides the natural causes of climate change, such as volcanoes and ocean currents, there
are also causes which were contributed by the humankind and has led us to an almost harsh
environment today. Everyone agrees that we, humans, are responsible for the damage done to
nature. One evidence is the Pasig river, which has been declared as biologically dead because of
the amount pollution that it has taken from the garbage dumped by the people. Air pollution has
also become a threat to world, especially in the Philippines. Urban areas have a very low count on
trees and massive amounts of vehicles travel on a daily basis, and most of which contribute harshly
As a responsible and concerned citizen, we must start to take care of our environment by
disciplining ourselves. Most of the reason why cities flood is because of the huge amount of trash
that people throw on the streets. Even the mere candy wrappers contribute to flooding as it can get
stuck on the drainage system underneath, thus flooding beyond knee-level. Another reason is the
lack of trees which are a huge factor in preventing floods. Trees prevent flooding by acting as a
sponge and absorb the rain flood through its soil, unlike on pavements where the rain water just
run on top of it. By planting more trees, especially in the urban area, we can prevent huge-scale
floods. Another pollution that has greatly damaged the environment is land pollution. Main causes
include the use of chemicals used on crops for pest control and soil erosion which are caused by
rain flood. Avoiding the use of these chemicals can result to a healthier land in which crops can
grow. Another impending problem in the environment is air pollution. Scientists and
environmentalists find it hard to resolve this type of pollution because of the industry. One huge
factor that contributes to air pollution are the factories that emit greenhouse gases to the
atmosphere. Vehicles also use diesels which were derived from fossil fuels, also a great factor in
air pollution. By reducing the use of vehicles and riding bikes instead could greatly help our
environment and also our physical health. In short distances, walking would be a great alternative
as there would still be a huge amount of fossil fuels used with short-distance driving. Using public
transport can also be an option, if really necessary, to reduce the volume of vehicles that pollute
the atmosphere.
