Industry Calendar Reflecting on this Thanksgiving 2019 edition of the Small Fruit Update
I’m drumming up a little nostalgia and a lot of thanks.
Commission & Councils
I’ve been immersed in agriculture all my life. I was raised watching the
grain prices and weather all day every day, recognizing if I wanted to
spend time with my family it needed to happen in the cab of a tractor,
and expecting that early morning wake up call to start the farm day.
SUBSCRIBE >> These often chaotic activities shaped who I am and I’m extremely
thankful for them.

For those that don’t know, I was raised on a farm in Saskatchewan.

Canadian Thanksgivings were always spent scrambling to get the
crops off before the snow flew. If it rained, we grumbled around the
Thanksgiving table and if the weather was fit for harvest, we were
eating our turkey dinner out of Tupperware plates in the field. Either
way, it was usually a short-lived occasion, but we always took a few
minutes for perspective to celebrate the bounty we brought in that
year.

Fast forward to the last decade of me being part of the Pacific North-
west berry industry (ok, it’s been more than a decade but I’m starting
to lose count). I’ve worked alongside researchers, industry represent-
atives, and dedicated community members. But nothing is better
than working alongside growers all of whom work tirelessly towards
producing fruit they are proud of.

So as I prepare to celebrate my Thanksgiving here as a newly minted

American citizen, a citizen who is still proudly working in agriculture
I’ll leave you with this reflection of thanks. Thanks to you all for being
part of the bounty making that makes celebrations like this meaning-
ful.

I hope to see you at the NCSFR Conference and the Small Fruit Confer-
