Lab: Gummy Bear Katelyn Colley

Name: _________________________________________
Osmosis 10/31/19 B1
Date: ________________________ Period: ____________________
__________/100%

Background:
Molecules are always moving. Remember that DIFFUSION is the movement of molecules from an area that is
highly crowded to an area that is less crowded.

OSMOSIS is similar to DIFFUSION. OSMOSIS is the diffusion of water molecules through a selectively
permeable membrane.

Remember that selectively permeable means some molecules can move through the membrane while others
cannot.

Cells use osmosis to move particles that it needs into and out of the cell.

Answer these questions BEFORE the lab:

1) What is diffusion? (2 pts)

____________________________________________________________________________________

Diffusion is the movement of molecules from area to area.
____________________________________________________________________________________

2) What is osmosis? (2pts)

____________________________________________________________________________________

Osmosis is the diffusion of water across the membrane of a cell.
____________________________________________________________________________________

3) What does selectively permeable mean? (2 pts)

____________________________________________________________________________________

Selectively permeable means that only certain molecules can pass through.
____________________________________________________________________________________

4) Prediction: How will soaking Gummy Bear candies in tap water affect the size of the candy?
(explain your prediction based on the background information) (6 pts)
____________________________________________________________________________________

Soaking the gummy bears in the water will probably make then grow in size and shape.

Materials:
Beaker 2 – 3oz Dixie Cups 2 – Gummy Bears
Tap Water Marker Digital Scale
Ruler Paper Towel Calculator
Salt Plastic fork

PROCEDURE DAY 1:
1) Get a beaker, 2 – Dixie Cups, 2 - gummy bears, ruler, and marker.
2) Fill your beaker with tap water.
3) Label your cups with your group name. Label one “tap water” and the other “salt water.”
4) Pour about 1 oz of salt into the cup labeled “salt water”. This will be approximately 1/3 of the cup.
5) Fill each cup half way with tap water from the beaker.
6) Measure both of your gummy bear’s height and width in centimeters and record it in the data table
below.
7) Using the digital scale, find both gummy bear’s mass in grams and record it in the table below.
8) Draw all the details of your gummy bear in the data table below. Be sure to draw it the size it really is!

PROCEDURE DAY 2:
1) Find your group’s cups and pull each gummy bear out using a fork. Be Careful not to break the gummy
bear.
2) Place the gummy bears on your paper towel.
3) Using your ruler and your scale, take the correct measurements to fill out the rest of your data table.
4) Calculate the percent change in the size of the candy using the formulas below:
Tap Water - % Change (6pts)

POST LAB QUESTIONS:

1. Describe what happened to your gummy bear after soaking it in tap water over night: (4pts)
____________________________________________________________________________________
The gummy bear grew in height, mass and width. It got bigger and was almost transparent.
____________________________________________________________________________________

2. What changed the most, the height, width or mass of your tap water gummy bear? (2pts)
___________________________________________________________________________________
The mass of my gummy bear changed the most.

3. Did the gummy bear soaked in tap water have a hypotonic, hypertonic or isotonic reaction? (2pts)
___________________________________________________________________________________
The gummy bear soaked in tap water had a hypotonic.

4. Describe what happened to your gummy bear after soaking it in salt water over night: (4pts)
____________________________________________________________________________________

The gummy bear grew and was almost transparent.
____________________________________________________________________________________

5. What changed the most, the height, width or mass of your salt water gummy bear? (2pts)
___________________________________________________________________________________
The mass of my gummy bear changed the most.

6. Did the gummy bear soaked in salt water have a hypotonic, hypertonic or isotonic reaction? (2pts)
___________________________________________________________________________________
The gummy bear had a hypotonic change after being soaked in salt water.

CONCLUSION: (15 pts)

7. Write a PARAGRAPH which explains the results of this experiment using the concept of osmosis.
Think about how much swelling can occur to the gummy bear for it to reach a point of equilibrium or
balance with the solution you soaked the gummy bear in. Include how your results and data support or
bust your prediction. Also, explain where you may have made mistakes in the lab and how you could
make the lab more accurate.

was almost transparent. The same thing happened to the gummy bear soaked in
salt water. Both gummy bears had a hypotonic change. The mass of both gummy
bears changed the most compared to the height and width.
