Compare/ Contrast Essay

Deciding which career path to choose can be difficult for a lot of college students such as

myself. Luckily, I had a considerable amount of job experience when I submitted my application

to SJR State College. I was an automated logistical specialist looking for a change, but not too

drastic. I browsed the school’s impressive catalog thoroughly, unsure of my next move. After

further research, medical office administration appealed to me and felt the most familiar. The

logistics field and medical office administration have similar duties, such as customer service,

operating computer software, and compiling and maintaining records.

Customer service is an everyday duty in the logistics field. As a logistician, mine was the

first face customers encountered in the main office. I was responsible for answering questions

and scheduling appointments related to scheduled and non-scheduled equipment maintenance.

As part of this customer service, I screened situations at the lowest level before bringing them to

the attention of the motor sergeant. I also answered phone calls, left messages, and coordinated

pick up dates with customers on behalf of the maintenance shops. I often attended to long lines

of people.

Operating computer software is another vital duty in the logistics field. In my previous

role, the softwares I utilized included Sams1-e, ULLS-g, and others. These softwares allowed me

to organize and share data amongst other logisticians. I used them to capture labor and manhours

of other employees. They are also used to order and track parts, which is imperative for both the

maintainer and the customer. This came in handy when compiling and maintaining records.

Compiling and maintaining records is the most important duty in the logistics field. The

types of records I dealt with consisted of work orders, financial statements, and equipment

history. These records must be filed in accordance with standard operating procedures and are a

backup to the data entered in the computer softwares. They are also maintained for the purpose

of continuity and privacy. Some files held sensitive information on licensees and other

employees. My office files were often inspected by our support team to uphold company

integrity and policy.

As in the logistics field, customer service is also an everyday duty in medical office

administration. Instead of greeting customers, however, I will be greeting patients. I will be

answering insurance questions and checking patients in and out of their appointments. Like

screening customers for the motor sergeant, my responsibility will be preparing patients to see a

nurse or doctor, such as by checking identification and verifying personal information.

Answering phone calls, leaving messages, and booking appointments will be necessary as well.

With my previous office experience, I am prepared to deal with crowded waiting rooms.

Operating computer software is important in medical office administration in the same

way as compared to the logistics field. There are many different softwares used by hospitals and

other medical facilities, such as Advanced MD and NextGen. These software track appointments

and organize schedules for medical personnel. This allows them to focus on one patient at a time.

Billing and insurance information is also entered and stored for security and convenience.

Consistent data entry in both careers is largely beneficial to a company’s goal.

Compiling and maintaining records is as equally essential to medical office as it is in the

logistics field. I will still be accountable for maintaining financial records, but in this case, it will

be for insurance billing, medical supplies, etc. If there is a filing system in place, I will need to

comply to the rules and procedures when handling the files. Privacy of sensitive information is

even more crucial in a medical office because medical records must be protected by law. Another

reason compiling and maintaining records is so essential is because less that one-third of all

medical administrative computer softwares are compatible to others in the same field. This

means that a patient may need their records on file to be faxed, mailed, or even hand carried.

Although the logistics field and medical office administration are hardly identical careers,

their roles are basically the same. They both serve as clerical foundations that are necessary to

the success of an organization. It’s helpful when choosing a career path to choose something that

inspires the role you want to play in an organization. For me, that role is to administratively

support a larger entity that people rely on. As a logistician, I supported several maintenance

shops of military equipment. Now I can take this experience and use it towards working in a

medical office.
