TOPIC 1: SELF SUSTAINABLE CITY AT MADURAI

TOPIC 2: MULTISTOREY- MIXED USE DEVELOPMENT AT

HOSUR

TOPIC 3: TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT IN

MADURAI

TOPIC 1 : SUSTAINABLE TOWNSHIP AT

MADURAI

INTRODUCTION :
Cities and towns have become the primary human living
space. Since 2007, more than half of the world’s population has been living in
urban areas and the figure is estimated to exceed 70 per cent by 2050. This is a
hallmark of the transformation of humans’ economic base and social structure,
inasmuch as, previously, populations lived and worked primarily in rural areas.

AIM :

The vision for a new framework for sustainable urban policy

can, therefore, deal with methods that make sustainable solutions an attractive
and beneficial alternative for all.

OBJECTIVE :

 To develop a self-sustainable Township which incorporates residences,

commercial buildings, industrial buildings which are clubbed together
to form a self-sustaining eco-system.
 Proper Recycling methods to reuse water and other manageable
wastes.
 Interconnectivity between the different areas to minimize vehicle
usage .
 Use of solar and other renewable energy sources to generate power.
 Cultivate Organic food inside the site area.
 Reduce carbon footprints created by humans.
 To form an eco-system which functions inside its own

SCOPE :

The sustainable communities share a common purpose:

places where people thrive to enjoy good health and create a high quality of
life. A sustainable community reflects the interdependence of economic,
environmental, and social issues by acknowledging that regions, cities, towns
and rural lands must continue into the future without diminishing the land, water,
air, natural and cultural resources that support them.

TOPIC 2 : MIXED USE DEVELOPMENT AT

HOSUR

INTRODUCTION :
One of the Urban Design Principles which cuts across many
urban areas around the globe is the principle of mixed- use development.
Mixed-use development is the practice of allowing more than one type of use in
a building or set of buildings. In planning terms, this can mean some
combination of residential, commercial, industrial, office, institutional or other
land uses. This tends to create shorter distance between work, residence and
recreation and goes a long way to enhance the livelihood of the inhabitants.

AIM :

To design space which integrate various urban activities that

blends a combination of residential, commercial, cultural, institutional, or
industrial uses, where those functions are physically and functionally integrated,
and that provides pedestrian connections.

TOPIC 3 : TRANSIT ORIENTED

DEVELOPMENT IN MADURAI

INTRODUCTION :

Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) has become the talk of

urban development in the recent years. Though being applied as a form of
urban expansion or human settlement since the beginning of civilization, urban
planners and designers are now researching the advantages of such a
development strategy to solve the issues like urban sprawl and building a
sustainable city. Australian metropolitan cities are well established in their transit
systems and represent a mixed-use development that makes them vibrant and
active. But the focus needs to be on the regional cities that are set to develop in
the next 20 years to work with the metropolitan cities to provide better living and
working conditions.

AIM :

To design a Interconnected Network Hub which facilitates

faster movement without any mass crowding. TOD can be broadly classified into
processes, places and amenities, further broken down to design dimension that
will allow us to study the varied TOD examples to form an
approach in dealing with the different characteristics of the places and
maximize the positive impact of TOD.

OBJECTIVE :

 To design a Multistory Transportation Hub which incorporates Railways

metro rail and Bus terminus.
 To Ensure Safety and security on the transport system
 To develop a commercial transportation hub which earns income to
the city.

SCOPE :

Urban design works in a broader scale than the built

environment that takes into consideration the overall planning and design of a
block, precinct, neighborhoods and districts. Thus devising a TOD plan on the
urban design principles is a good approach to a common ground amongst
the varied social and cultural environments.
