Supplementary Assignment for Chem 103,_Nov 2014

Dept. of Chemistry, UPES

Total Marks 100 (Each Q is worth 6 marks, Q 8 is worth 10 marks)

1. Briefly describe collision theory and its limitations. Explain why reactions with molecularity
higher than three are rare.
2. The rate of a particular reaction becomes three times when the temperature is increased from 298
K to 308 K. Calculate the energy of activation for the reaction.
3. Briefly describe how the order of the reaction is determined by differential method and the half-
life method.
4. An acid solution of sucrose was hydrolyzed to the extent of 54% after 67 minutes. Assuming the
reaction to be of first order, calculate the time taken for 80% hydrolysis.
5. Explain Kohlrausch law of independent migration of ions and mention two applications.
6. The specific conductance of a saturated solution of AgCl is 1.55 × 10-6 ohm-1 cm-1 at 25 oC. The
ion conductance of Ag+Cl- are 61.94 and 76.34 ohm-1 cm2 respectively. Calculate the solubility of
AgCl in gram equivalent per liter at 25 oC (neglect the conductance of water).
7. Derive the expression for the determination of transport number by Hittorf’s method when the
electrodes are attackable.
8. In a moving boundary experiment with 1N KCl solution using CaCl2 as indicator, a current of
0.0115 A was passed for 30 min and the boundary moved 2.5 cm through a cross-section of
0.0424 cm2. Calculate the transport number of the K+ ion. Calculate the reduction potential of
Cu+2/Cu electrode at 25˚C, if the standard reduction potential of Cu+2/Cu is 0.34V and
concentration of Cu+2 in solution is (i) 2 M (ii) 0.2 M.
9. Explain why benzene reacts with bromine in presence of a Lewis acid catalyst and draw the
energy diagram.
10. Propose step-wise synthesis of isopropylbenzene and propylbenzene starting with benzene.
11. Give the mechanism of the following reaction CH3-C(CH3)2-CH=CH2 + H3O+ → CH3-
C(OH)(CH3)-CH(CH3)2
12. Arrange (i) triethylamine, (ii) pyridine, and (iii) pyrrole in terms of their increasing basicity with
proper explanation.
13. Explain why nitro group is meta- directing on a benzene nucleus by drawing the resonance
structures. How the electromeric effect is different than inductive effect.
14. Aluminum forms FCC crystals. The density of Al is 2.70 g/cc. Calculate the length of the side of
the unit cell of Al. (At. wt. of Al = 27)
15. Calculate the angle at which 2nd order diffraction will appear in a X-ray spectrometer when X-rays
of wavelength 1.5 Å are used and interplanar distance is 4.04 Å.
16. Draw diagrams to represent (i) primitive, (ii) FCC, (iii) BCC, and (iv) edge centered cubic lattice.
