Teacher Activity Student Activity
1. Old Lesson
A. Review
Good afternoon Grade 9! Good afternoon teacher.

Last meeting, we discussed about

momentum. For me to check whether you
really learned the discussion, let us have a
review.

I want you to say “Ayos” if the statement

is true and “Hay Naku” if it is false.

Okay, so let us start!

1. The unit of momentum is kg.m/s. 1. Ayos!

2. Momentum will depend on its mass and 2. Ayos!
velocity. 3. Hay Naku!
3. The formula for mass is m=pv. 4. Ayos!
4. Momentum is represented by letter p. 5. Hay Naku!
5. The two factors that affect momentum
are mass and time.

2. New Lesson
A. Introduction
a. Motivation
Class, someone delivered a box to me
earlier. Would you like to see what is inside
it? Yes, teacher.
Teacher Activity Student Activity
What have you seen inside the box? I have seen a picture of a child wearing a
seatbelt.

Oh! That’s interesting!

What do you think is the purpose of the
seatbelt? Seatbelt will prevent the child from
bumping into the car’s dashboard.

Exactly! What will happen to a person if

he did not wear a seatbelt when there is an
accident? The person will get hurt because there is
a greater force happen during an accident.

Precisely! It is due to the greater force

acted on an object during an accident.

The picture that I showed to you is

concerned with the concept of impulse.

b. Statement of the Aim

If we were going to discuss about
impulse, would you like to learn? Yes, teacher.

So this afternoon, we are going to discuss

about impulse.

B. Interaction
Class, I have here a video clip and I want
you to watch it carefully. Students do as told.

What was the video clip all about? The video was all about a man playing a
soccer game.

Alright! What did the man exert when he

kicked the ball? The man exerted force when he kicked
the ball.

Did the man exert a large amount of force

or just a small amount of it? The man exerted large amount of force so
that the soccer ball will roll fast.

That’s correct! Do you think that the

Teacher Activity Student Activity
force acted on an object affect time? Yes, teacher.

Why do you think so? The effect of a force on an object depends

on the time the force acts.

Perfectly said! Based on the scenario,

how will you define impulse? Impulse is the product of force and time.

In that case, what are the factors that

affect impulse? The factors that affect impulse are force
and time.

That is right and it is equated as I=Ft

where I stands for impulse, F = force and t
= time.

Based on our equation, what do you think

is the unit for impulse? The unit for impulse is Newton second
(N.s).

Can you still recall the formula for

Newton’s second law of motion? The formula for Newton’s second law of
motion or law of acceleration is F=ma.

Take note that:

a = vf – vi / t

We will derive the formula class.

F = ma
F = m (vf – vi / t)

If we will rearrange the equation, what

will be our formula? Ft = m(vf – vi) is the formula.

Very good! Since we have the formulas,

we can now solve problems regarding
impulse.

Equation A
I = Ft
Equation B
Ft = m(vf – vi)

Sample Problem 1
1. A force of 4.0 N acts on a 2.0 kg mass
Teacher Activity Student Activity
object for 10 seconds. Find the impulse.

What are the given in the problem? Given: F = 4.0 N, t = 10sec. , m = 2.0 kg

In addition, what is asked in the problem? Asked: I = ?

Which of the two equation are we going

to use in order to find impulse? We are going to use the equation A.

Brilliant! Now who can solve it on the

board? Student does as told.
I = Ft
= (4.0 N)(10sec)
I = 40 N.s or 40 kg.m/s

That’s correct! Now let us have another

example.

Sample 2
How much time is needed to accelerate a
3 kg object from rest to 12 m/s if a force of
2.5 N is applied?

What are the given? a. Given: m=3 kg

F=2.5 N
vi=0
vf=12 m/s

What is asked in the problem? b. Find: t = ?

What equation are we going to use? c. Formula: Ft = m(vf – vi)

Who can solve the problem on the board

and for those who were on their seats solve
also for I will be checking your notebook. d. Solution:
(2.5 N)(t) = (3 kg)(12 m/s – 0)
(2.5 N)(t) = 36 kg.m/s
2.5 N 2.5 N
t = (36 kg.m/s)/(2.5 kg.m/s2)
t = 14.4 seconds

Sample Problem 3
How much force is exerted on a 4 kg
object accelerating from 10 m/s to 12 m/s
in 2.5 seconds?
Teacher Activity Student Activity
a. Given: m = 4 kg
vi = 10 m/s
vf = 12 m/s
t = 2.5 s

b. Find: F = ?

c. Formula: Ft = m(vf – vi)

d. Solution:
F (2.5 s) = 4 kg (12 m/s – 10 m/s)
F (2.5 s) = 4 kg (2 m/s)
2.5s 2.5s
F = 3.2 N or 3.2 kg.m/s2

C. Integration
For me to check whether you really
learned the discussion, let us have a review.
We are going to have a group activity. I
need 8 groups for this activity. Kindly
count off from 1 to 8. All odd-numbered
groups you are going to occupy the seats
on my left and other groups on my right.
Groups 1 and 2, you are going to answer
problem # 1, groups 3 and 4 problem # 2 so
on and so forth.

Are we making ourselves clear? Yes, teacher.

Group Activity Problems

Problem # 1
1. How much force is exerted on a 13 kg
object accelerating from 20 m/s to 12 m/s
in 3.5 seconds? a. Given: m=13 kg
vi= 20 m/s
vf= 12 m/s
t = 3.5 sec
b. Find: F=?
c. Formula: Ft= m(vf – vi)
derived: F= m(vf – vi)
t
d. Solution: F= 13kg(12m/s – 20m/s)
3.5 s
= 13 kg (-8 m/s)
3.5 s
Teacher Activity Student Activity
F= -29.7 N or -29.7 kg.m/s2

- 2.5 N -2.5 kg.m/s2
t = 237.6 s

Values Integration
Class, you have learned that the stronger
the force, the greater the effect in terms of
impulse.

During our activity, did you exert effort in

order to finish your work at the given time? Yes, teacher. All of us solved the problem
and when we arrived with the same correct
answers, we eventually write it down.

In life class, if you exert effort or

hardwork you will have a fruitful
achievement. So what you did today was
awesome. Keep it up.

This time we are going to check how far

is your understanding about our topic take
you by having a quiz. Always remember
hardwork is the key.
