FACTORS AFFECTING THE GRADE 10 STUDENTS IN CHOOSING THEIR STRAND AT NABANNAGAN

NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Background of the study

The strand offered by Senior High is the first step towards thechosen career of the student. The strand
that the student will choose will provide necessary skills in preparation for their future job. So itis
important that students choose the right strand and if not, can havedetrimental effects to their future.
How students choose theirpreferred strand? There are many factors affecting the student’sdecision.
These range from family choice to influence from friends. Theschool also plays a big role in the student's
selection of a track. Whatif the track the student wants isn't accessible in the said school? Theyend up
choosing the wrong strand. Influence can be a reason whystudents choose a track that is even not for
them. Even students inGrade 11 are still confused in their choice of track because of the lackof guidance.
If a student disliked the strand that he/she took, they canchange their strand but with consequences.
students can pick up knowledge more efficiently because they will not be overwhelmed when an
advanced topic is taught becausethey already have a good grasp of the knowledge that is needed for
thetopic hence improving their skills.Even before they arrive at SHS, Grade 10 students are into
adilemma in which track to choose. This led the researchers to do astudy on the track preferences of
Grade 10 students. The different strands which are the Science, Technology, Engineering
andMathematics (STEM), Accountancy and Business Management (ABM),Humanities and Social Sciences
(HUMSS), and General AcademicStrand (GAS)

How they can prevent this from happening? How can a student choose the right track for theirfuture?
That is why they conduct this research to identify the trackpreferences of the students and guide them in
choosing the righttrack.

Theoretical Framework

The Choice Theory states that fundamental premises of the school which explainsthat all people are
allowed to develop their own creativeness. That allpeople are curious about future, that the most
efficient andknowledgeable in learning is started and pursued by the learner. Italso claimed in this theory
that freedom is essential to thedevelopment of their personal responsibility. According to this
theory,development of their knowledge, creativeness and talents will givesprogress in their reason to
choose and it will give hint to what they want a career in the future.

Conceptual Framework

Based on Republic Act No. 10533 otherwise known as the“Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013” the
law was signed by formerPresident Aquino on the 15th day of May in the year 2013.The RA 10533 seek
to strengthen early education of the children, build proficiency through language, and provide upper
secondaryeducation. In RA 10533, Senior High School there will two years addin high school program.
The two years curriculum will help thestudents to think and decide about their interest and
specialization. The choice of specialization will define through subjects in Grade 11and 12. The new
curriculum system aims toimprove the chances of qualifications in employment of the student’sfuture
and will allow them to have middle-level skills and besuccessful after graduating high school.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to identify the factors affecting the strand of Grade 10 students of Nabannagan National
High School.Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1.What is the profile of the grade 10 students in terms of:

a)Sex;

b)age

;c)address;

2.What are the Senior High School strand preferences of the respondents?

3.What are the factors affecting the strand of the respondents?

4.Is there a significant relationship between the respondent’sprofile to their choice of Senior High School
strand?

Hypothesis

The study will be guided by the given hypotheses in terms of:

1.1 Name (optional)

1.2 Sex

1.3 Grade level

1.4 Age
There is no significant relationship between the profile and thechoice of strand of Grade 10 students in
Nabannagan National Highl School interms of choosing their strand.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The study focuses on the Factors affecting the grade 10 students

in choosing their strand. This research will be further limited

to the Grade 10 at Nabannagan National High School. This

research will end and be done on the last Semester on the School

Year 2019-2020.

The main objective of this study is to know how the students

being prepare in choosing their strand. Each of the respondents

will be given a questionnaire and will address with

confidentiality of their answer.

Significance of the Study

The results of this study will be beneficial to the following:

Grade 10 students. This study will serve as a guide to them

inchoosing their preferred strand for their upcoming SHS.


Teachers. This will also be beneficial to them who play a big

rolein shaping students into successful people, as this study

helps themfocus more in their mastery to deliver a better

learning experience tofuture Senior High School students.

.Parents. They can help their future SHS students in guidingthem

to the right track for their children.

Researchers themselves. They will benefit the result of thisstudy

to choose their preferred strand.

Future Researchers. They can use this study as reference

inhelping them in their own research study.

Definition of Terms

Grade 10 is the fourth and last year of Junior High School. In

the Philippines, Grade 10 students are inthe range of 15 to 16

years old.

Senior High School is the additional 2 years in the K to 12

BasicEducation. Prior to graduating Grade 10, they enter Senior

HighSchool where students will choose strand that is linked to

their future jobs.

Academic track in senior high school is aims to prepare students

to more advanced university courses. Under this umbrella are four


strands. General Academic (GA) Humanities and Social Sciences

(HUMMS) Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

career defines how one sees oneself in the context of one’s

social environment, in terms of one’s future plans, one’s past

accomplishments or failures and one’s present competences and

attributes (Raynor & Entin, 1982:262). UNESCO (2002:4) .
