TOWARD ADIWIYATA SCHOOL

A. Background
We all know that the environmental damage to our planet is increasingly
threatening our lives. The level of carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere as a result of
air pollution is very alarming and threatening the integrity of the earth. Global warming,
extreme weather , melting polar ice caps, rising sea levels, and damage to coral reefs it's
all because of gas emission levels in the atmosphere have already passed the safe
threshold. Floods, landslides, droughts and erratic rainfall are also due to all the
environmental damage caused by human activity that does not have a soul and a sense of
concern for the environment around us.
Saving the environment is severe it cannot be done by only one or two people or
institutions, but by all parties. Awareness of the need to preserve and save the
environment should be fostered in every person and the most effective that is through
education. And we act as an educated man is doing the real thing in saving our
environment. One way is to establish a caring school culture and school environment or
adiwiyata. So , what is the adiwiyata school?

B. The Definition of Adiwiyata school

Adiwiyata School is a school concerned about the environment healthy, cleanlines


and beautiful environment. With the expected that throughout the adiwiyata programs the
community around the school to realize that a green environment is a healthy
environment for our health.

School Care and Cultured Environment aims to improve the capacity , knowledge,
and understanding of the management and protection of the environment in sustainable
development through education. The basic reason is to held the Adiwiyata School,
sustainable development of which is a shared responsibility, including the world
community to save the earth from destruction, and devastation of development that do not
care about environmental sustainability. Through schools is one way to make a
commitment to develop environmental education programs at every level of education in
Indonesia . Adiwiyata school is an appropriate means and ideal, to realize the school is
responsible for the protection and management of environment (PPLH) .

C. The Purpose of Establishing Adiwiyata School
1. General Purpose
Forming school caring environment and culture that is able to participate and
implement environmental conservation efforts and sustainable development for the
benefit of present and future.
2. Special Purpose
Realizing that the school community is responsible for the protection and
management of the school environment through good governance to support
sustainable development.
Create good conditions for schools to be places of learning and school
community awareness, so that in the future the school community can take
responsibility for efforts to preserve the environment and sustainable development.
The main activity directed at the establishment of the school of institutional care for
the school environment and culture in Indonesia.

D. How to Achieve Adiwiyata School

To realize the care and culture of the school environment, we would require some
school policies that support the implementation of the activities of environmental
education by all citizens of the school.
The development of school policies include:
1. Based Curriculum Development Environment by educational units in Indonesia.
2. The vision and mission of the school are caring and cultured environment.
3. School policy in developing education learning environment.
4. Policy capacity building of human resources (faculty and non - educational ) in the
field of environmental education .
5. School policy in an effort to save natural resources.
6. School policies that support the creation of a school environment clean and healthy.
7. Creating extracurricular activities in the environmental field based on the school
environment.
8. Development function supporting existing school facilities for environmental
education.
9. The development of waste management systems.
10. Participate in environmental activities in the environment / surrounding area.

The following is the explanation of the issues above:

 Developing Environmental-Based Curriculum


Submission of environmental materials to students can be done through an
integrated curriculum or monolithic. Material development, learning models and a variety
of learning methods, conducted to provide insight to students about environmental issues
associated with the day-to- day environment (local issues) .
 Developing Activity -Based Participatory in environmental hygiene.
To realize the care and culture of the school environment, school community need
to be involved in various activities in learning environment . In addition the school is also
expected to involve the local community in a variety of activities that provide good
benefits for people in schools, communities and the environment .

 Management and Development of school instruments


In realizing that caring school environment and culture should be supported
facilities and infrastructure that reflect environmental management efforts.

Among others, include :

a. Development function supporting existing school facilities for environmental


education.
b. Improving the quality of environment management inside and outside the school
area.
c. Saving natural resources (electricity , water , and paper).
d. Improving service of quality healthy food .
e. The development of waste management systems , for example by separation /
grouping types of waste .

 Advantage Program Adiwiyata


1. Creating a school community together and teaching-and learning conditions more
comfortable and conducive
2. Making learning place values and the maintenance of environmental management
whether it is good or right for the citizens of the school and surrounding community
about environtment.
3. Improving the protection and management of the environment through pollution
control , damage control and preservation of the function of the school environtment.

4. Doing 5 R Concept in Environmental management
How to Apply Concept 5 R:
5 is derived from an English word that is Reduce Reuse, Recycle, Replace and
Replant.
a. Recycle
Recycle is activity reprocess or recycle. Principally, activity utilizing thrift by
processing the material to be used further . Examples are utilizing and processing
of organic waste to be used as compost.
b. Reuse
Reuse is reuse of material activities or materials that are still worth taking. For
example , plastic bags or paper bags generally obtained from we shop , should not
be discarded but is collected for re-use when it is needed . Another example is to
use rechargeable batteries.
c. Reduce
Reduce or reduction is to reduce the use or activity patterns of behavior that can
reduce the production of waste and does not do excessive consumption patterns.
The example uses cutlery or kitchen durable and quality so as to extend the life of
the product or recharge or refill product is used as aqua gallon, printer ink and
household materials such as detergent, soap , cooking oil and other . This is done
to reduce the potential amount of trash products in our houses.
d. Replace
Replace or replacement is the use of an activity to replace the item or wear
alternative goods that are more environmentally friendly and can be reused. This
effort assessed can change a person's habits that accelerate the production of
waste. For example, changing the use of plastic or paper bags by bringing their
own shopping bags made of cloth .
e. Replant
Replant or re- planting is replanting activities. For example, creative activities
such as making compost and gardening in the yard. By planting a few trees, we
can enjoy the beautiful surroundings, as well as it helps to control temperature at
the level of the microenvironment (or around our own homes) and reduce
contribution to global warming.
By applying the concept of the R- 5 has been discussed, we can participate in
preserving and maintaining an environment that is not damaged or contaminated.

E. Conclusion and Suggestion
1. Conclusion
From the discussion above we can conclude that to take care and save our
environment is the duty of all human beings that includes all parties. Adiwiyata
schools can be considered as an institution that is effective to create the awareness of
environmental care living.

2. Suggestion
Adiwiyata school program is our common ideals. great destination for our school
(MAN 2 Wates) can be adiwiyata’s school in the future. So, through this seminar I
invite friends to participate in achieving the big goal. With the principles of
togetherness, the spirit and the vision Im sure we can make it happen. So, I hope from
my friends to change the negative behavior like littering, vandalism, littering the
environment and so forth. By changing the attitude of a student who always dispose
of waste in place, maintaining the cleanliness of toilets, energy efficient and do not
scribble on the environment. Hopefully we can realize our goals and we can
participate in saving our planet (earth) of global warming.
