Overview
Smart Farming is a concept of farming management using modern Information and
Communication Technologies to increase the quantity and quality of products.
Among the technologies available for present-day farmers there are Sensing technologies,
including soil scanning, water, light, humidity, temperature management;
Software applications, specialized software solutions that target specific farm types;
Communication technologies, such as cellular communication;
Positioning technologies, including GPS;
Hardware and software systems that enable Internet of Things based solutions
Introduction
The objectives of this report is to proposed IOT based Smart Farming System which will enable
farmers to have live data of soil moisture environment temperature at very low cost so that live
monitoring can be done.
The structure of the report is as follows: chapter I will cover over of overview of IOT
Technology and agriculture-concepts and definition, IOT enabling technologies, IOT
application in agriculture, benefits of IOT in agriculture and IOT and agriculture current
scenario and future forecasts.

Statement of the problem
In this section, the problem statement is presented that is illustrated using in the following, first
the details of each case study are presented, and subsequently the problem statement is
described.
Internet of Things technology has brought revolution into each and every field of common
man’s life by making everything smart and intelligent. Internet of Things refers to a network
of things which make a self-configuring network. The development of Intelligent Smart
Farming Internet of Things based devices is day by day turning the face of agriculture
production by not only enhancing it but also making it cost-effective and reducing wastage.
Hence, the aim of this report is to propose Internet of Things based Smart Farming System
assisting farmers in getting Live Data (Temperature, Soil Moisture) for efficient environment
monitoring which will enable them to increase their overall yield and quality of products. The
Internet of Things based Smart Farming System being proposed via this report is integrated
with Arduino Technology mixed with different Sensors and a Wife module producing live data
feed that can be obtained online from Thingsspeak.com. The product being proposed is tested
on Live Agriculture Fields giving high accuracy over 98% in data feeds.

Significance of smart farming
Knowledge and capital are essential for any innovation. New farming
technologies require more and more professional skills. A farmer today is not only a person
with a passion for agriculture, he or she is also a legal expert (to find their way through a
growing maze of regulations) and a part-time data analyst, economist and accountant (making
a living from selling agricultural produce requires bookkeeping skills and an in-depth
knowledge of market chains and price volatility).
Furthermore, Smart Farming requires capital. Thankfully, there are a wide range
of options available. From using low capital investment smart phone applications that track
your livestock to a capital-intensive automated combine. In principle, implementing Smart
Farming technologies can be easily upscale.
Agriculture is the broadest economic sector and plays an important role in the
overall economic development of a nation. Technological advancements in the arena of
agriculture will ascertain to increase the competence of certain farming activities. In this paper,
we have proposed a novel methodology for smart farming by linking a smart sensing system
and smart irrigator system through wireless communication technology. Our system focuses
on the measurement of physical parameters such as soil moisture content, nutrient content, and
pH of the soil that plays a vital role in farming activities. Based on the essential physical and
chemical parameters of the soil measured, the required quantity of green manure, compost, and
water is splashed on the crops using a smart irrigator, which is mounted on a movable overhead
crane system (Jagannathan & Priyatharshini, 2015)
