RESEARCH PROPOSAL

I studied the Latin language for two years and I loved to learn about the effects of Ancient Greek
on Roman language and culture. I recently watched a documentary series called “Great Greek
Myths”. I enjoyed learning about all of the different myths and how many explained natural
phenomena to the Ancient Greek people. The Ancient Greeks regarded this mythology as a part
of their history. I wondered about the implications of these myths on the people that believed
them. Did they have specific rituals and traditions based around these myths? I decided I needed
to know more about the connection between Greek Mythology and Greek culture. I knew “the
connection between Greek Mythology and Greek culture” would be too broad of a research
question. There are so many different faucets of the ancient Greek culture and countless Greek
myths. I decided to choose a collection of myths that had plenty of resources available online and
in print in order to further delve into a woman’s role in Greek mythology and Ancient Greek
Culture.
I feel very excited and inspired by the topic of Greek Mythology and Ancient Greek
culture. I’m excited read about something that is not entirely based on current events and get to
delve into an ancient culture. I’m excited to see what I learn from the Ancient Greeks. I think the
Ancient Greeks must have some rituals, traditions, or festivals based on their understanding of
women. I also expect to find evidence of the sexism that the Ancient Greek society is founded on
reflected in Ancient Greek Mythology.
Within Ancient Greek Mythology, I suspect that many of the myths that contain women
have some footing in how we view women today. I believe this topic will work well because
there are a lot of different opinions on what constitutes sexism and our role as a modern society
within the realms of sexism. I think a lot of people feel they are exempt from sexism even though
our society then and now how revolved around sexism and was founded on the oppression of
women. I already know the myths that have women characters. I also know a little bit of Ancient
Greek history. I also have some ideas of how their culture may have impacted later civilizations.
I need to know more about Ancient Greek culture in terms of how they treated women
and what role Ancient Greek women played in antiquity. I also need to learn about how The
Ancient Greek Society impacts us as a modern society, if at all. I am hoping to have a better
understanding of how Greek Mythology impacted their lives and what it all meant to them. How
can we be sure that their myths reflected their views? My idea for A research question is: Can the
roots of sexism in our modern society be traced to the Ancient Greek’s sexist views and silencing
of women and reflected throughout Greek Mythology?
