My research paper will be addressing how taking care of the elderly’s needs in the home
affects both the caretaker and the patient. The emotional and physical care that comes with
being an in-home caretaker will affect everyone involved. I want to find out how exactly
caretakers go about meeting the needs of the elderly and what strategies they use in order to
cope with any stressful situations they might meet. I also want to find out how being a
This book was written by Janice Blanchard in 2013, in the town of Chapel Hill NC. It is
titled “Aging In Community” This book talks about how it is easier for the elderly to age when
they are in a community. This community is important. Aging around those you love makes the
entire experience easier. A large percentage of those who are above 65 years old will require
some form of long-term care. No matter how strong their genes are, eventually in-home care
may be necessary. It lists the different effects that caregivers will feel. They can feel increased
depression. It is also common that they exhaust many of their financial resources while caring

conditions of those who want to age in place. This book was written in 2013, so it has
I will use this source in my paper to introduce why caretakers are so important and why
they are necessary to any elderly person who wishes to continue living in their home. It will
help me answer the section of my research proposal that wonders how being a caretaker
is physically disabled and has dementia. The main points of my interview with him were how he
effectively cared for my grandfather’s physical and emotional needs. For example, he explained
that a successful transfer requires the caretaker to lift both from under the arms and by
The entire purpose of the interview was to gain additional information about both the
physical and emotional care required to care for an elderly patient who has dementia. The

I will use this information in my research paper when I talk about how the caregiver

Financially and Emotionally While Caring for Yourself. Thorndike Press, a Part of Gale,
This book was written by Carolyn Brent in 2015. It is titled “The Caregiver’s Companion”
The main point of this source is to provide the best information for someone to become an
excellent caregiver. This source covers many important topics that caregivers, or those about to
become caregivers, might ask themselves. In this book, the author describes when the best
time to “step in” is to become a caregiver. In her case, it was when her father began having
trouble taking care of himself and needed someone to constantly be with him. The book also
goes over the basic steps to becoming a caregiver such as asking if one has the flexibility to
accommodate the needs of the loved one, if the home is safe enough, if one is physically strong
little to no experience caring for another person. The intended audience are those who know
nothing of caring for the elderly, and those who wish to deepen their knowledge of being a
caretaker.
The author of this book is Carolyn Brent. She is a credible author because she is writing
about her own experiences while writing about how to be a caregiver. Brent acted as a
caregiver for her own father, which allowed her to experience it for herself. Now, after she has
become a caretaker, she is sharing her knowledge with the rest of the world, so they can have
I will use this information in my research paper to discuss both the physical and
emotional needs that need to be met when acting as a caretaker. This source will also be used

elderly-parents-146706.htm.
This article was written by Carol Bradley Bursack. It is named “New Caregivers: How to
Prepare, and What to Expect.” The main point of this article is discussing two different ways
that caregivers earned their job title. It says that caregivers either use the “sneak up” method,
or “the crisis” method. It also provides many details for the best way to “get comfortable” in
the role of a caretaker. She provides details such as setting boundaries to avoid burnout, and
mastering flexibility.
The writer’s purpose in writing this article is to assist those who are becoming caretakers.
She is trying to make them feel comfortable with their new responsibility. Therefore, the
intended audience for this article are those who need information on how to care for someone
in need. This article was written in the context that someone new to caregiving would read it.
Someone with absolutely no idea how to be a caretaker would find great value in this article.
The writer is Carol Bradley Bursack. She is a credible writer because she has been a
caregiver for her neighbor and six of her elderly family members. Since she was a caregiver, she
knows how to take care of someone, and can therefore write an article on how to get started.
She has also written "Minding Our Elders: Caregivers Share Their Personal Stories".
I will use this article in my paper to discuss the first steps a caregiver can take. I will

caregiver, however, is the man’s son and daughter. It also talks about a man with Parkinson’s
disease and how his wife must act as his caregiver. In an interview with her, she states that she
sometimes hates her position, but continues to do it because she loves her husband.
The purpose of this documentary is to enlighten people to what the life of a caregiver is
like. In the two examples they show, the hardships of the caregivers can be seen. The intended
audience for this documentary is those who are curious as to what a caregiver’s life is like. It
could also be for those who are about to become a caregiver and need to know what to expect.

The author of this book is Bernadette Hattjar. This book is called “Fundamentals of
Occupational Therapy”. It was written in 2019, in Pennsylvania. The main points in this source
are discussing how to conduct occupational therapy as a caregiver. It goes into detail describing
different forms of physical disability and how to deal with them. It also talks about different
social activities that a caretaker can allow their patient to take part in. For those with dementia
or Alzheimer’s disease, activities and games consistently stimulate the brain, which prevents
further decline.
The writer’s purpose in writing this article is to inform those in a position of caregiver
how to properly care for those with dementia or other mental/physical disabilities. The
intended audience are those who have a loved one or patient who needs serious care and must
have constant supervision. This book was written for those who have been a caretaker and are
looking for extra knowledge, or for those who suddenly find themselves caring for someone

Gannon University gives her the credentials to write this book, so this is a very reliable source
I will use this information in the paper when I am talking about the specific
responsibilities of being a caregiver. It can be used to answer the section of the research
question that asks how a caregiver can care for their patient. It can also be used to show how
anyone can give this level of care, and does not need to be a professional.

This article was written by Elzana Odzakovic, Lars-Christer Hyden, Karin Festin, and
Agneta Kullberg. It appeared in March of 2019 in the Scandinavian Journal of Public Health. The
main point of this article was to see what kind of home care was offered to those with
dementia. The study looked at three different Swedish counties and determined how many
people had dementia, and what type of home care they were receiving. For example, around
17,000 people in those counties had dementia, but out of those people, 72% lived in ordinary

because they are also affiliated with the department of Social and Welfare studies in that same
University.
I will use this article to discuss how many elderly people live their life without any
outside help. These elderly people with dementia are risking their lives every day and could
easily hurt themselves. I will discuss the percentage of people who live without in-home care
