I know DEGIRO is not a bank. But in order to open an account with them you need
to have a non-East-European bank account. They don't say anything about being

I'm having a hard time figuring out more technical and legal aspects about funds. I know
bank accounts have €100k protection by law, so I'm wondering if I should split my
positions between different bank accounts that commercialize the funds so that I'm only
~€100k in each one, or that "risk" doesn't apply to investing accounts (or maybe it's the
law that doesn't apply to the funds; I honestly don't know).
Hope r/EuropeFIRE

Thanks to the upwards market of the past days/weeks, today I have hit the magic
number of E100k which would have seemed insane to me just a few years ago. It also
coincides with the best year of my life on a personal level and meeting a new partner.
This seems like a nice, symbolic moment for me to share a little bit about my journey.
This has by far been the best year of my life, so sorry if it sounds a bit bragging. Let me
start with my low point a few years ago.
Five years ago, I was finishing my masters degree and I was in my first long-term
relationship that was lackluster on both sides. Then I got into an accident which was a
serious threat to my life. A week later the relationship of 3.5 years broke while I was still

Also heard that getting and extending visa there, is not as complicated as in Thailand.

I need an advice. I'm in early 30's from CZ/EU and unable to work due to complex mostly
neuroimmune chronic illness which gives me really bad quality of life. It's incurable at the
moment but it won't probably kill me soon enough either unless I choose to check out.
Despite this my country's disability assessment process doesn't give me any disability
benefits because it isn't mentioned in the assessment guidelines which shouldn't be a
problem if they followed the law but in reality it is not happening. I know only about 1
person who sued for denial of benefits and after 5 years won (the court decision can only
start the process from the beginning, not override the decision). I will try to fight the
system and get at least something trough accumulation of other diagnosis but I can't rely
on any possible benefits I could get in the future from this social system that actually got

I've been a bit lazy for most of this year as moving to Europe has been very fun and I've
just been traveling all around enjoying my new found freedom, extra holidays, and the
proximity to so many cool places. I opened a checking account with Commerzbank but
they flat out told me they will not open any brokerage accounts for Americans which I am
not too surprised about since we have the shitty FACTA. Am wondering if anyone knows if
it's possible to open a brokerage account in any capacity in Germany? Have about €50k
sitting the bank earning 0% so it's time I do something with it. Likely that I wil just
transfer it back to my US account but wanted to see if anyone else has any recs.
