1. Pick one of the CEO presentation decks from the class.

Provide a critique of the

deck as if you were the CEO. Would you hire the team that produced the deck or
not? Why? (10 pts)

Kroger

I would hire the team, I like the idea that your team presented, and things showed on
power point. As the Kroger’s CEO, I have aware that what’s the big issue we are
facing right now, from your presentation you have pointed out that what I really what
to know. But to be honest, I don’t think your suggestion is efficient to pursue. We are
not only one company facing this kind of problems, the others’ solution even all
retailing company has the similar action like your guys suggested, but I don’t see a
significant effect. But I appreciate your team’s thought and idea, so I would hire your
team to do a deeper research and have more efficient solution.

2. Is Regrained an example of the circular economy? Is Wheyward Spirit? In each

case, why do you think that? (10 pts)

Regrained:

ReGrained works with brewery partners to rescue the grain after they have extracted
the sugars needed to make beer (Regrained site).Regrained has seen the potential
behind the post-beer waste, they transformed the waste into “supergrain” which
include protein, fiber, and a whole bunch of micronutrients. Then creates tasty and
nutritious food out of upcycled supergrain that we rescue from craft breweries which
is the best definition for circular economy.

Wheyward Spirit:

Wheyward Spirit is not as obvious as Regrained shows on circular economy. But

Wheyward Spirit have their own special recipe directly from scratch and from raw
materials, not pre-purchased ethanol. But they have special craft technique that use
excess whey from milk and cheese making helps to prevent food waste. Although
Wheyward Spirit is not like Regrained devote to the circular economy obviously, but I
can Wheyward Spirit is working on the sustainability circular economy.

3. When big companies have a hard time innovating themselves, sometimes they
will purchase a smaller business or start up that has already. For example, when
Nike did not have a waterless, non-toxic dye, they purchased a portion of Dyecoo,
startup that made a non-toxic dye that doesn't need water. Imagine that your big
company (PayPal, Kroger, United, etc) wants to get into the circular
economy. Find a "circular economy" based business that you think they should
consider buying. Make the case that they should buy it. (20 pts)

Based on the workshop we did, I would recommend Roche acquiring “recycle

package”. According to the situation what Roche is facing now, water contamination
is a result of improper disposal of drugs. Creating a drug recycling program will
reduce water contamination. Through advertising, Roche will advocate for proper
disposal of their products, subsequently, no harmful contaminants would enter local
environments. Besides, use the recycle medical package helps this process in the other
way. “Consolidated Strategy Group” is a company provide medical packaging, their
Mission is to serve the needs of our customers with products and services that exceed
performance through environmental responsibility. This means responsible business
practices along with common sense packaging solutions using innovative designs and
materials for minimal environmental impact. Managed Forestry initiative programs
for paper products and plastic materials are chosen for continuous recycling and
renewable material resources.

On the other hand, we mentioned creating a drug recycling program for Roche,
Consolidated Strategy Group look for ways to “Size” their products, calculating and
producing packaging in the most effective size is key for transportation optimization
and ensuring that we use no more material than necessary. This makes our products
more space-efficient and economical, requiring less energy to produce and ship to our
customers; further reducing the carbon footprint for all consumable materials used.
The acquisition of Consolidated Strategy Group could help Roche on the circular
economy process.

4. Find and describe an example of biomimicry that is not in the readings. (10 pts)

An example of biomimicry is living Buildings seek to restore functions such as this by

mimicking the native environment. For example, in the temperate rainforests of Seattle,
several layers of pine needles shattered the rain and atomized it before reaching the
forest floor. The residential building here uses a flower trough and Mossy skin on the
side of the building to emulate this function.

As we have seen the trend of regenerative cities from the perspective of buildings to
built-up ecosystems, shared resources, in the desert, living buildings may mimic the
cooling of cacti and other drought-tolerant plants and water retention features. With
more extreme weather expected in cities worldwide, Living Buildings and Regenerative
Cities can supplement some of the ecological services we’ve been missing.
