Reflection 3

1.) The new vision statement for the company is:

“To ensure that the screening, diagnosis, treatment and even prevention of diseases will

be cost-efficient and effectively transform the lives of people everywhere and that

manufacturing is utilizing biodegradable materials only.”

Explanation of Framework Used

The above vision statement combines the original one with environmental protection

according to the triple bottom line framework. The vision statement considers the economy,

environment, and community (Hitchcock & Willard, 2008). However, the vision states the

company’s consideration of the economics of production first. This is evident from the fact the

company’s services will be “cost-efficient.” Secondly, the vision statement shows a concern for

the community as it envisions to “transform the lives of people everywhere.” The third and last

part of the vision mentions a commitment to environmental protection through biodegradable

materials only. Overall, according to the new statement, Roche sees itself become more

environmentally friendly in all its manufacturing activities. However, this vision statement does

not change the original mission. On the contrary, it only amplifies the original mission statement,

in that it specifies how exactly the company involves itself in sustainability.

2.) Company Report & Sustainability

Roche Holdings Company does not have any exhaustive 10-K statement in Edgar.

However, the company’s annual report dated December 31, 2018, contains certain insights into

its drivers of sustainability. Roche, in its report, includes a section that addresses the matter of

environment exclusively. In this specific section, the company typically focuses on “minimizing
2

the impact on the environment” (“Annual Report,” 2018, p. 78). The company claims that

environmental protection represents not just its “statutory or social obligation” (“Annual

Report,” 2018, p. 78) but is part of its operations. To this end, Roche is working towards

achieving two goals in its mandate to preserve the environment. To begin with, the company

aims at reducing its energy consumption. Second, Roche works towards minimizing its

greenhouse gas emissions. Central to these goals and objectives entail the environmental risks

that the operations of Roche pose to the environment.

Accordingly, the corporation maintains the motivation caused by these risks to mitigate

the threats through prevention and environmental management programs. For instance, the

organization has a team of employees that identify ecological risks that the company poses. After

the identification, the same team works on deciding the most appropriate preventive cause of

action. Apart from prevention, the company also measures its general impact on the

environment. It uses the metrics for renewing its efforts on minimizing the effects. Therefore,

recognizing the risks that the company’s production poses to the environment has enhanced the

motivation for its environmental protection efforts.

3.) Go to the "careers" portion of your company's webpage. Are there any facts or

messages you can find there that provide a justification for sustainability activities at the

company?

The “careers” section of the company shows four key elements, namely; “our culture,”

“our purpose,” “organization structure” and “excellence in innovation” (“Careers,” 2019). These

four elements tie back to the company’s endeavor to conserve the environment. The company

culture, purpose, structure, and innovation completely tie back to sustainability. For instance,

Roche claims that environmental protection represents a critical part of its operations, effectively
3

making sustainability part of its culture. The company aims at being the leader of sustainability,

thereby considering environmental protection as part of its purpose. Furthermore, Roche consists

of a team of employees that ensure that it is preserving the environment through the mitigation of

environmental risks. Lastly, in its efforts to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, the

company is designing its workforce to work on technologies that advance its production systems.
