Presentations concentrating on mathematics teacher education or mathematics education in general are
welcome. For 2019, the MATHTED International Conference Theme is “Mathematics Education 4.0: Issues and
Innovations”. We encourage proposal writers to highlight connections to this theme, as appropriate, when
submitting proposals to any of the presentation strands.

At the submission process, you will be asked to classify your presentation according to strand, which are:
(A) Classroom practices and interventions, (B) Psychology of mathematics education (Affect, Intelligence), (C)
Sociocultural aspects of learning, (D) Assessment and task design, or (E) Others.

Abstracts should have at least 250 words but must not exceed 300 words, and must clearly state the problem
or thesis being addressed, the methodology, results, and implications. All submissions will be reviewed by the
paper presentation committee, and all accepted papers will be assigned either for oral presentation or for
poster presentation.

Important Dates

ABSTRACT
K TO 12 GRADUATES: LEARNING MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERNM WORLD

ABSTRACT. The Philippine education system launched a new college curriculum in response to the K to
12 curriculum in basic education. New general education (GE) subjects were introduced as not to repeat the
subjects already offered in senior high school and to help develop 21 st century skills among the learners. The
subject Mathematics in the Modern World (MMW) is the only mathematics GE subject included in the new
curriculum. The said subject is adopted from American curriculum and included new concept like voting and
apportionment. Since, the subject requires new knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values it is imperative that the
students will be ready to learn it. This study aims to determine the correlates of students’ performance in MMW
considering various factors as profile, attitude towards the subject, and 21st century skills. It is founded on the
Bruner’s Constructivism Theory and Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Theory. This study will use Descriptive –
correlational method. To gather data needed for the study, questionnaire and documentary analysis will be
conducted. A self-made questionnaire with three parts will be administered to 120 randomly selected students
from the College of Teacher Education. The students’ level of mathematics performance will be determined
through documentary analysis through their semester grade in MMW. The data that will be collected will be
treated using mean, frequency count, percentage, Pearson’s, and hierarchical regression. A predictive model
will be designed after the application of regression analysis should some predictors emerged. The predictive
model will be proposed to serve as bases for the formulation of possible intervention and action plan to improve
the performance in Mathematics in the Modern World of the K to 12 graduates.
