Local Literature

Mathematics is a unique subject and it is a fundamental part of school

curriculum. It is an instrument for the development of all other sciences.

Knowingly or unknowingly, we are using mathematics in every face of life. It is

the building block for everything in our daily lives, including mobile devices,

architecture (ancient and modern), art, money, engineering and even sports.

However, majority of the students here in the Philippines are dislike Mathematics

because they are having a struggle in their Mathematics subject.

Some of the reason for this may be that the aversive teaching style,

difficulty in following the instruction, difficulty in understanding the subject, and

difficulty in remembering its equations and ways to solve problem. (Ibag, 2011)

According to Miranda (2016) the main reason why many Filipino students

have difficulties in Mathematics because they may be experience a feeling of

tension, anxiety and even fear when engaging in Math, a phenomenon known as

Math Anxiety it is the negative emotional reaction to situation involving numbers,

calculations and mathematics that affects the ability to solve problems and

manipulate numbers in various academic and daily contexts.

Rubio (2011) in her article of Lyceum of the Philippines University,

Batangas City, Philippines reported that:

“Among the 51 students, 82% of students in their school said that they

do not like Mathematics, and among 24 students, 75% of students a belief that

Mathematics is a difficult subject. When 20% rated mathematics as a very

difficult subject, 54% reported medium difficulty, and only 10% consider it as an

easy subject. Around 42% fail to identify the ways to solve problems provided in

their textbook. Even as 63% find it as boring and 58% of students fear

mathematics, still, 43% felt learning mathematics as interesting.”

It is alarming observation that many Filipinos students are found lacking in

the ability of basic mathematics. It can not be denied that most of the prospective

Filipino students are unprepared for learning mathematics. (Laurel, 2014)

The low understanding level accompanied by discouraging achievements

of the students in Mathematics has become a cause of great concern of our

country and has bothered badly the educationists. (DepEd, 2012)

Foreign Literature

A cited by Benito in the study of Cabatay et.al (2011) that Mathematics is

learned because of many reasons. Firstly, the mastery of basic Mathematical

skills is needed in order to cope with the demand of life. Such demands include

being numerically literate, gaining tools for future employment, developing the

prerequisites for further education, and appreciating the relationship between

mathematics and technology.

Secondly, mathematics is the language of the sciences, and many disciplines

depend on this subject as a symbolic means of communication.

Mathematics is being main part of human lifestyle. In the world, each society

has their own mathematical languages, terms, symbols, counting system in

different countries like as American, Korean, Japanese, Arabian etc. But even

that, 70% of students in other country stay away from many careers related to

Mathematics. (Scopio, 2014)

According to World Bank report (2011) in most developing countries, not

enough Mathematics teachers are being produced by Universities and Colleges.

Therefore, College and Universities graduates are being encouraged to pursue

these courses purposely to fill the gap. Students’ performance in mathematics

subject has been investigated through bilateral surveys in two European

countries (Robertson, 2013) Poor school performance not only results in the child

having a low self-esteem, but also causes significant stress to the parents

(Karande and Kulkarni, 2012).

Local Study

It has been a long time since Math is hated by most of the Filipino students.

They said that the four operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication,

and division are more than enough, while other formulas are, what for? They

hated it extremely to the extent that until this time, where modernization is widely

experienced, modern teaching is then observed in many schools yet students still

hated Mathematics. (David, 2015)
