INTRODUCTION

Practicum or on-the-job training is essential for it allows students to experience

and observed how to work on an actual field they had chosen. Through practicum,

students will know their duties and responsibilities on their future career.

Practicum provides limited practical work experience wherein students will be

able to apply their knowledge and skills acquired in school to actual work.

Objectives of the Practicum

 To experience working in an actual field on different setting: Industrial, Clinical

and Educational for them to fully understand the duties and responsibilities as

future public servants.

 To acquire additional knowledge and skills from their chosen institutions that is

essential in their future career.

 To apply all the lectures the students had learned during their previous years in the

university in actual industry.

Time and Place of the Practicum

The practicum for industrial setting was conducted at AutoDelta Coach Builders

Inc. located at Alabang, Muntinlupa City. The practicum was successfully completed the

150 hours for the period covering July 05, 2018 to July 26, 2018. The office hours start at

ACTUAL OBSERVATIONS AND EXPERIENCES

As part of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Psychology,

we are required to undergo an on-the-job training which requires 120 hours of training for

each setting; clinical, industrial and educational setting. For the industrial setting, we had

chosen the Autodelta Coach Builders Inc. located at Alabang, Muntinlupa City. The

company was known to be a distributor of different buses and just started its operation

last January 2018. The company was one of the Robie P. Torres group of companies. It

was 04th day of July when we started our practicum at Autodelta Coach Builders Inc.

Human Resource Department. As an HR Intern, we were introduced to the HR Team as

well as to other departments, such as Accounting Dept. and Aftersales. During our first

week, we were introduced to the different forms/documents essential to our future field.

As a probi in the field of recruitment, we were monitored during our first day in

conducting an initial interview to the applicants. Even though, the company was just one

of the RPT group of companies, the Human Resource Department was assigned on the

recruitment of applicants needed by the other companies. The company acquires

applicants through online website such as indeed and jora. During our practicum, we

were also in-charge on job posting and screening of curriculum vitae of applicants. After

selecting qualified applicants who meet the qualifications listed on the Manpower

Requisition Form, we were tasked with contacting those qualified applicants and

scheduled them for an initial interview. When the applicant passed the initial interview,

we will introduce him/her to the department head who needed the applicant. We have

learned a lot when it comes to recruitment for the whole 140 hours of our practicum. On
6

the other hand, we were also tasked with inventory of supplies, daily monitoring and

approving of letters/forms to different department heads, and encoding of 201 files of

employees. Since payroll was very sensitive for the company, we weren’t able to handle

or even see this kind of work, but the HR and Admin Assistant taught us on how to

compute salaries and wages, bonuses, and withheld taxes of the employees using the

Microsoft Excel.

During my practicum, I learned how to value time, maintain good relationship

with co-trainees and superiors and handle my duties and responsibilities as a practicumer.

Duties and Responsibilities

The following are the tasks assigned to the intern during her On-the-Job-Training

in Autodelta Coach Builders Inc.

 Recruitment involves job posting through online website (www.indeed.com),

screening of resume and curriculum vitae according to the qualifications listed in the

Manpower Requisition Form given by the department head who needed the applicant,

scheduling them for an initial interview through sending text messages, entertaining

applicants and conducting an initial interview through personal or phone call,

introduced them for second interview and then, for final interview. Arranging their

201 files, monitoring the status of applicants.

 Updating and encoding 201 files of the employees, it covers all their confidential

data or information such as Job offer, contract, SSS benefit identification cards,

certificate of employment and other personal documents. Every employees has their

own 201 files since the day they were hired and ends when they leave the company. It

was updated properly to secure that every member of the team is properly monitored.
7

 Monitoring of SSS death claim forms of the two former employees of the

company. Assigned with the completion of the different SSS death claim forms and

EC accident forms for the benefits of the family members of the employee.

Answering phone calls of the family members asking for an update and meeting them

personally to give the SSS death claim forms for signature.

 Monitoring and organizing of Request for Payment Forms and Request to Stay-

in Forms. It was done every day for filing or documentation of the company. Request

for Payment Forms was done when the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) was

asking for reimbursement. Request to Stay-in-Forms was given to the employees who

were residing inside the company, it was updated to properly monitor whether the

employee was still residing inside the company or the dorms were occupied by the

employees only.

 Monitoring and organizing Manpower Requisition Forms and Inventory of

Supplies. Manpower Requisition Forms was given to the department head who

needed an applicant into their team, this document was very relevant in recruitment

because it provides the qualifications and positions that are needed by the department.

Inventory of Supplies was done every day, it was updated properly to monitor the

kitchen supplies and office supplies totally consumed by the end of the day.

 Updated all the forms needed for organized recruitment process. Every afternoon,

before leaving the company, maintaining the number of copies of different forms

needed for the following days was done. It is very crucial and waste of time if the

forms is insufficient for the numbers of expected applicants that will attend the initial

interview for the following day.

8

 Daily monitoring of letters/forms. Approving letters/forms to different department

heads. The practicumers were assigned in accomplishing different forms such as

Request for Payment Forms, Request to Stay-in Forms, Manpower Requisition

Forms, SSS death claim forms and EC accident forms. They were tasked in asking for

the signature needed in the forms. Every accomplishment and updates were reported

to the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO).

Problems Encountered

During the practicum, they experience a lot of difficulties and struggles. Since the

location of the company is more than an hour far from their residency, it requires more

budget and time in travelling. On their first week in the company, they really try to blend

and adapt in the work place and superiors. Since it was their first week in conducting an

initial interview, the HR assistant must always have to monitor them even though he has a

lot of job to be done. But the major problem that they have encountered in the company is

that, papers/documents is not properly organize since it was a newly opened company

and the office that they were working to was only temporary.

Solutions

As time went by, adjustment took place for the practicumers, they learned on how

to manage their time, they arrived for two hours before 0800H then they will be able to

come as early as 30 minutes before the said time. To maintain the organization of the

documents, they always have to be neat and disciplined in working. The practicumers

help the HR assistant in putting labels on every documents for them to find easily what

they will be looking for. The superiors of the company were easy to be working with and
9

they must say that, for the whole 140 hours of their practicum, they really build a close-

knit relationship with their co-trainees and superiors.

Every morning and before they leave the company, they rest assure that the forms,

documents, office and computer supplies were properly arrange. On their last day in the

company, which is July 25, they manage to put labels on the documents according to its

status.

Insights

Human Resource is not only focusing on the recruitment and selection process but

in the organization of the employees. It is also very important to keep the records of the

employees and personally handle it yourself to make sure that everything is in order.

Recording files is very critical when it comes to Human Resource. A good working

environment for staffs was also very important.

Since they were just a practicumer, they only have limited time to experience and

observed how to work on the actual field. At first it was very difficult for them to fully

know what is their duties and responsibilities as a trainee, but along the way, they realize

that their starting the process. They were asked by the HR Assistant if they were able to

last on that kind of work/life cycle. He describe of being an HR as a circle, wherein if you

choose to get inside, you will not be able to come out, it’s a cycle, a very dull routine.

Then they answered him, at first, it was indeed a dull routine, waking up in the morning,

going to work, lunch break, going to work, going back home, sleep and so on, but if it’s

your passion, there is no dull routine, if you love what’s you’re doing, there is no closed

cycle.
10

The relationship among the staffs was also visible that working with them made

the atmosphere light for the practicumers. They see themselves working as an HR

someday, because they feel comfortable of working with papers, excels and powerpoints,

working on a corporate world.

Recommendation

For the students who will be conducting their practicums. Accomplished properly

your duties and responsibilities as a trainee, learn to initiate even though it was not

written in your job description if you think it’s is the right thing to do an do not forget to

always inform your superiors.

For the company. Continue on building productive and globally competitive

practicumers.

ACTUAL OBSERVATIONS AND EXPERIENCES

As part of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Psychology,

the students are required to undergo an on-the-job training which requires 120 hours of

training for each setting; clinical, industrial and educational field.

For the clinical setting, they had chosen the (Higher Power) Place Inc., located at

Brgy. Santol Silang, Cavite. The institution was known to be a treatment and

rehabilitation center exclusive for males. It was 3rd day of October when they started

their practicum at (Higher Power) Place Inc. As an Intern, they were introduced to the

other staff of the center as well as to the residents. During their first week, they were

instructed and properly oriented. The staff were very friendly to the practicumers though

there were always limitations. Compared to what we have learned in school the real

experience in the actual field could give more excitement and feel pressured at the same

time since we faced real clients. During the practicum, the practicumers is to be involved

with all activities that a regularly employed member or staff of the assigned

Rehabilitation Center (Counselling Area) is expected to perform. Both the on-site

supervisor (social worker and other staff) and the campus supervisor provide monitoring

and supervision. Before the said practicum, an orientation to the students is done to

ensure that they were properly oriented to the procedures, standards and limitations to

which the student is assigned. The practicumers were given a chance to observe and

participate in morning meeting, bible sharing/reflections, praise and worship, weekly

mass, group dynamics, journal reading, art therapy and other activities that is part of the

program. The practicumers were also given an opportunity to work with members of
other disciplines such as nurses, social workers, spiritual director and security personnels.

The experience is intended to be an interdisciplinary, educational one. At all times, the

practicumers is expected to work within center policies and standards. The practicumers

were told to observe the social structure, work patterns or the day-to-day flow of the

center in order to blend in as soon as possible. The practicumers were also told to dress

appropriately and maintain good physical appearance. The practicumers is expected to

arrive at the center before the expected time, though they were not encourage to be afraid

to work late.

The remaining days of their practicum was very inspiring and happy as they

interact with the residents. Their life stories made them realize that they were so blessed

and very fortunate that they’re not apart from their family. It’s been hurtful for us seeing

them being shouted because of the simple mistakes they have done. Even though,

resident are known to be the suspects of different crimes, inside the center and through

the help of the center, they never failed to understand them and apply the different

approaches of interaction with them. The staff made them realize that they were also the

same to other people outside, they just lose control over their body and mind due to

intake of drugs. During their practicum, they learned how to value time, maintain good

relationship with co-trainees and superiors and handle their duties and responsibilities as

a practicumer. As the days goes by, their companionship with the residents and staffs

shortens. They had mixed emotions-happy because they finished their practicum even

though it’s very late, but felt sad at the same time because they will miss those happy

times.
Duties and Responsibilities

The following are the tasks assigned to the intern during her On-the-Job training

in (Higher Power) Place Inc.

 Immersion. the practicumers were told to participate on the programs or activities

done every day. It involves observations and reflections.

 Lecture. the practicumers were given a topic to discuss. Proper lecture must be done

for the residents. It involves, energizer, discussion proper and activities related to the

topic given to them.

 Group Dynamics. the practicumers were task to conduct a group dynamic activity

for the residents in parallel to the topic that was given for the lecture.

 Psychological Report. the practicumers were task to conduct an assessment, test and

interview for two clients. After analysing and interpreting the tests, they must do a

psychological report.

Problems Encountered

The students encountered difficulties and struggles during their practicum that

they need to be dealt with and overcome. It’s been natural for an intern to experience

problems while having a practicum, it will help them to grow by utilizing their strength

and courage in overcoming difficulties. It needs a constant effort and continuous learning

for them to overcome this problems that they have encountered during the training.

The location of the center is more than an hour far from our residency and a

remote area type of place, they nearly lost on their first time to visit the center and it

requires more budget and time in travelling. On otheir first week in the company, they

really try to blend and adapt in the work place and superiors. Since it was their first week,
the staff must always have to monitor them even though he has a lot of job to be done.

They do not experience a major problem inside the center since it was organized and the

programs are properly done.

Solutions

The students learned on dealing with every difficult situation they encountered

with optimism and courage. As time went by, they learned on how to manage their time,

they became familiar to the place and never been lost again, the superiors of the company

were easy to be working with and they must say that, for the whole 120 hours of their

practicum, they really build a close-knit relationship with their co-trainees and superiors.

Every morning and before they leave the company, they rest assure that the

counselling room is properly arrange and they always maintain it cleanliness.

Insights

Since they were was just a practicumer, they only have limited time to experience

and observed how to work on the actual field. At first it was very difficult for them to

fully know what is their duties and responsibilities as a trainee, but along the way, they

realized that they’re starting the process. During their entire practicum in the center was

one of their memorable experiences not just because they experience the actual work in

the corporate world, but the people whom they met inside the center has the major

influence why they got deep interest in pursuing the clinical setting in the near future.

The work itself was very satisfying that they wanted to continue their practicum even

though the required hours has long past its limit. They learned a lot of things that they

could use even outside the center and all the knowledge and skills they acquired would be

a great help for them. They met different kinds of people, experienced things they may
only got to read in books and the treatment they got was the most treasured thing of all.

They could not have been enjoyed the experience if not for the people who trained and

guide them throughout the whole practicum. Their personality are so great that it really

fits the attitude as being part of the counselling team.

This practicum made them realize that the residents were not different to the

people outside the center. They were funny and easy to get along with. They made sure

that on their last day, which is a culminating activity, they bring them on a unique and

special experience. They see themselves working on clinical field someday and looking

forward for more knowledge and experience along the way.

Recommendation

Psychological assessment and therapy is indeed vital and necessary as part of the

treatment program of the residents. Proper monitoring and organizing of documents was

also very relevant as part of the maintenance of the center. Keeping the residents

physically fit and emotionally strong is also part of treating the residents. In light of

these, the students highly recommend for the center in continuing committing themselves

in building new life for the individuals and families affected by drug abuse. The center

must continue in providing effective program essential in the recovery of chemically

dependent individual and continous service and effective program that will enable the

drug victims to function as a productive and useful member of our society.

ACTUAL OBSERVATIONS AND EXPERIENCES

As part of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Psychology,

we are required to undergo an on-the-job training which requires 120 hours of training for

each setting; clinical, industrial and educational setting. For the educational setting, we

had chosen the Office of the Student Affairs and Services (OSAS) of Cavite State

University – Main Campus located at Brgy. Bancod Indang, Cavite. The Office of the

Student Affairs and Services (OSAS) is a functional unit of the University since 1980.

The office offers different services such as guidance and counseling, admission and

testing. It was 22nd day of August when we started our practicum at the Office of the

Student Affairs and Services (OSAS). As a practicumers, they were introduced to the

OSAS faculty and staff as well as to the other students who take their on-the-job training

inside the office. The guidance office, were properly ventilated and the relationship

among the staffs was also visible that working with them made the atmosphere light for

the practicumers.

Due to the implementation of free education granted for college students of state

universities in the Philippines, huge number of admission was highly expected. Although,

the practicumers did not experience to handle admission and testing of interested

students, they were assigned in organizing the admission forms and other requirements of

every student that is compiled and grouped according to their status.

During their On-the-job training, the International Standard Organization (ISO)

was scheduled to conduct an annual inspection to different offices inside the university.

Since the guidance office is one of the services of the OSAS, the office will be inspected

at the same time. The practicumers were told that organizing personal documents of the
students is one of the duty of the guidance office, to keep the information of its students

and to take care of its confidentiality. During the training, the practicumers were oriented

to focus and follow all the instructions that were given by the guidance counselor. The

main focus of the team was on the admin files due to the scheduled inspection of

International Standard Organization (ISO) in to office. The whole duration of the training

was involved in sorting of files. The practicumers were assigned to sort and organized the

requirements of the students compiled in a white short folder.

The practicumers were also divided into groups with different tasks, the other

practicumers were assigned in searching and organizing of entrance exam answer sheets,

while the other were assigned to scan documents that were delivered from the first group

who were tasked to organized the admission forms of the students. The practicumers

were properly monitored and instructed. During the practicum, the National Service

Training Program (NSTP) conducted an orientation that was held in the University

Gymnasium. The practicumers were assigned to the registration and attendance of the

students who attended the orientation.

The guidance office also offers counselling programs. The practicumers also

experienced conducting an initial interview to clients. But there were only two students

scheduled for counselling, with this, only two practicumers were assigned. Not all of

them has given a chance to handle counselling services. Due to the visitation of the ISO,

sorting and organizing of files was highly prioritized. Even though, the practicumers were

not exposed to the other areas of guidance and counselling services, the training was also

beneficial in terms of handling files of the students.

Duties and Responsibilities

The following are the tasks assigned to the intern during her On-the-Job Training

in the Office of the Student Affairs and Services

 The trainee sorted files, folders and forms of the students who took the entrance exam

in the university. Each folder of the students are composed of requirements needed by

the school upon taking exam. It was very important to organize the students file as it

serves as the reference of the Office of the Student Affairs and Services. The folders

are sorted alphabetically for organized and easy access of the file. The students with

incomplete requirements were separated and to be contacted by one of the

practicumers in the office. The needed information were also encoded to the database

of the office.

 The trainee attended to common inquiries which involves directing and briefing the

students and was also seldom to happen as the practicumers were assigned in the

temporary storage room of the office to sort the files of the students.

 The trainee observe student/clients of guidance office and facilitate basic interview

which did not get all the practicumers to experience as there were only two students

who needed counselling and were assigned to other two practicumers for initial

interview. And also the guidance office seldom receive students for counselling.

 The trainee facilitate issuance of stub for NSTP registration enrolment/payment. The

stub serves as a requirement upon the payment of NSTP fee in the University

registrar. The issuance of NSTP stub temporarily stopped during the first week of the

practicum.
 The trainee encode of evaluation forms of orientation program which was done by

other practicumers. The Office of the Student Affairs conducted an NSTP orientation

in the University Gymnasium and the practicumers served as registration committee.

Problems Encountered

There were a lot of problems the practicumers encountered during their

practicum. In sorting and organizing the files of students, practicumers were tasked to

separate folders with complete and incomplete requirements, then to separate it with

enrolled and not enrolled. It was very tiring since separating categories should be done

during the admission. The next thing that practicumers did was removing original copy of

documents and photocopied it then attached it back to the folder. It was found that it was

not properly checked during the submission of the requirements. Inconsistent instructions

has been a very huge problem since it doubled the work of the team and doing the same

process all over again for long period of time without accomplishing the goals.

Solutions

After the first two days of practicum, the adjustment took place for the

practicumers. The work was divided to each practicumers. They were assigned to a

specific letter to reduce the long period of time sorting the files. To avoid repeating the

work, it was done quickly but with quality. They made sure that each files were sorted

and organized properly. The practicumers were tasked to report what they accomplished

at the end of the day before leaving.

Insights

Guidance and counseling is not only focusing in the student itself but to

everything that connects with them. Since they were just a practicumers, they only have

limited time to experience and observed how to work on the actual field. At first, it was

very difficult for them to fully know what is their duties and responsibilities as a trainee,

but along the way, they realize that they’re starting the process. During their entire

practicum, they learned that recording files was very critical when it comes to guidance

and counseling as it also serves as their reference when conducting a counseling session.

A good working environment for staffs and clients was also very important especially

when conducting a counseling session.

Recommendations

The work would be easier for all the working staff if the instructions was

administered properly from the very start and would at least lessen the stressful

environment caused by repetition of work. It would be beneficial for the future

practicumers if the department would exposed them to the proper training related to their

course. But if it was not possible for the department because of their busy schedule, it

would be recommended to at least assign a person that could accommodate the training of

the practicumers that aligned to their course.

For the students who will be conducting their practicums. Accomplished properly

your duties and responsibilities as a trainee, learn to initiate even though it was not

written in your job description if you think it’s is the right thing to do an do not forget to

always inform your superiors.

For the company. Continue on building productive and globally competitive

practicumers.
