Freedom to be Obedient
Freedom in Christ is one of the most misunderstood concepts in Christendom. Many believe
freedom in Christ is freedom from obligation and consistent obedience to God’s will and Word. But
freedom in Christ is never described that way in the Bible. We are not given a license to live and act in
whatever manner we choose. Instead, Christians enjoy freedom from slavery to sin. Our freedom is the
freedom to be obedient. Our slavery is to be simultaneously enslaved to God, to love him and to serve
him. Christians enjoy simultaneous freedom and slavery.

God wants us enslaved to nothing and to no one except himself. This requires the work of entire
sanctification in the believer through the purifying of the heart from self-interest. The Holy Spirit
produces a single-focused divine love for God and the world. Our understanding of biblical holiness in
the Wesleyan tradition affirms motivations of a pure heart (Acts 15:8-9). Our one desire is to remain
enslaved to Christ where there is true freedom.

Problems arise when we replace our slavery to God with slavery to anything else. A false
understanding of our freedom will sometimes lead to slavery. To whom or to what are you enslaved: to
God or debt, pornography, food, another person, unforgiveness, substance abuse or entertainment?

The apostle Peter states clearly, “…a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him” (2 Peter 2:19).

“Give me liberty or give me death.” This seems to be the heart cry

of every human being throughout the world. God created us free and every person yearns to exercise this
precious gift from God. Unfortunately, many people, including Christians, do not fully understand the real
nature of this freedom given to us by our Creator.
Many people think freedom allows them to do whatever they like and however they like to do it. But the
fact is, for freedom to prevail, there must be basic rules.
Most of us drive automobiles. Our expectation is to drive confidently, arriving at our destination safely.
However, in order for this to happen, all drivers must obey the traffic laws. If one person does not follow the
rules, he could cause an accident. Can you imagine the chaos and catastrophe if airplane pilots created their
own rules for flying?
Sadly, some people apply their potentially destructive free attitude toward driving to their attitude toward
their spiritual life, and that of sin. Sin leads to consequences. Sin has the power to control and dominate
people. Paul describes this condition as “body of sin.” Body does not refer just to the physical body here but
to the whole person. Paul, in 1 Corinthians 6:19 said, “…your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, which
is in you...” In other words, the Holy Spirit lives within the body of the believer. Romans 6:6 says, “…
knowing this, that our old man was crucified with ‘him’, that the body of sin might be done away, that so we
should no longer be in bondage to sin...” Body of sin indicates that our total person is controlled by sin, so
we don’t have freedom not to sin. When the body of sin is done away with by God, we are set free from the
control of sin.
In Romans 5:20-21 Paul wrote, “And the law came in besides, that the trespass might abound; but where
sin abounded, grace did abound more exceedingly: that, as sin reigned in death, even so might grace reign
through righteousness unto eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Some people think that since we
have been set free, we are free to sin, particularly because Paul said, “where sin abounded, grace did abound
more exceedingly.” These people have a wrong concept about grace. They think that grace is unmerited
favor. That is true. Grace, however, is not merely unmerited favor, it is also power. When Paul asked God

to remove his thorn in the flesh, God said, “My grace is sufficient for thee: for ‘my’ power is made perfect in
weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). God’s grace is power. It is power to resist sin. If we experience God’s grace
in forgiving sin, this grace of God also will empower us to resist sin, so that we don’t have to sin any more.
We can live the life of victory over sin described in Chapter 8 of Romans. In Romans 6:18 Paul wrote, “…
and being made free from sin, ye became servants of righteousness.” This indicates that the opposite of sin
is righteousness. Sin is unrighteousness. Paul described and analyzed the sin of the human race in Romans
1:18-3:20. In Romans 1:18 he wrote, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness
and unrighteousness of men, who hinder the truth in unrighteousness.”
Paul goes on to describe how the Gentiles refused to have a good relationship with God. They worshiped
idols instead of the true living God. As a result, they did not treat other human beings according to God’s
will; consequently they didn’t have a good relationship with one another. Even though the Jews claimed to
know God, they did not obey the law of God. So the Jews did not have a good relationship with God either.
After he addressed the evil behavior of the Gentiles and the Jews, in Romans 3:23 Paul declared, “for all have
sinned, and fall short of the glory of God…” Sin is unrighteousness, being in a bad relationship with God
and fellow human beings. Righteousness is having a good relationship with God and others, and it promotes
good and appropriate relationships. Of all the good relationships, the good relationship with God is the
most important. Therefore Paul also wrote in Romans 6:22, “But now being made free from sin and become
servants to God…” Being servants of righteousness means being servants of God.
The inevitable result of being set free from the power of sin is becoming a servant of righteousness. This
also implies that being servants of righteousness is the means of being set free from sin.
To enjoy true freedom is not to do whatever we want to do however we want to do it, but to become
servants of righteousness, servants of God.

 Freedom from FEAR by Rev. Bryant Madren

What is a simple four letter word that often can stop a Christian, and even a church, dead in their
tracks? Yep, you guessed it, fear! Fear of the unknown, fear of the what ifs and fear of failure keep many
people from fulfilling God’s perfect will. We know that kryptonite is the force that brings Superman to a
screeching halt and to his knees. Is that what fear does to you? As we look at God’s plan for our lives and
for the local church, we find that fear can bring us to a screeching halt. I have often asked myself, if we
Christians really believe that God is all powerful, and sovereign, then why do we allow fear to overpower us?
I recall one night about a year ago, I was awakened from my sleep by a paralyzing fear of the arduous
task, and enormous cost of the building program we are committed to at Old Richmond EMC (OREMC).
I was sobbing uncontrollably, because I had allowed fear to creep into my mind. Fear had replaced the
peace of God and his confirmation that we were in his will. I thought my wife Leslie would have to slap me
to bring me back to my senses (thank goodness she didn’t). Paul penned these special words to his young
protégé Timothy, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound
mind” (2 Timothy 1:7 KJV). Even while I was sleeping I was still vulnerable to this attack of the enemy.
According to his Word, fear is never from God. Satan uses other people, our flesh and even fellow church
members to bring fear into our lives! While reading God’s Word we find that fear stopped David’s brothers
from defeating Goliath. It was fear that was placed in the hearts of 10 out of the 12 spies of Israel. It was fear
that consumed and led Elijah to flee from Jezebel. It was fear that hindered Moses from readily accepting
the position of being God’s ambassador to free the Israelites from Egypt. If I were to spend five minutes with
you in conversation, I might find that it is probably fear that is holding you and your church back from
being what God has called you to be and doing what God has planned for you to do!
If we embrace the spirit of fear, that spirit will always hinder us as believers. However, if we embrace
the Spirit of God where there is freedom and liberty, his Spirit is the only
resource powerful enough to set us free. The Holy Spirit offers
genuine freedom and peace. In Acts 9:31(NKJV) we are given
the prescription for a healthy church: “Then the churches
throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and were
edified. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort
of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied.” The only fear we
should ever walk in is fear of the Lord.
As for OREMC, we are walking by faith and not by sight!
Our new 22,109 square foot worship center will be completed
by the summer of 2013. We are trusting God to provide, and we
are not allowing fear to control our thoughts, or our plans. Fear
will always produce what Satan desires, but faith produces what
God desires. Which do you have, fear or faith?

 Freedom from Worry

In 1988, Bobby McFerrin had a hit song that gave the advice, “Don’t Worry Be Happy.” In 2005, the
country trio of singing sisters, SHeDAISY, told us, “Don’t Worry ’Bout A Thing.” What a quick fix! Just
don’t worry about it. But worry can readily rear its ugly head and take over our lives.
Jesus offers us an alternative to worry. The Greek word translated as worry or anxiety has a root word that
means to divide, implying to distract. In Matthew 6, Jesus has already told his listeners to have a single eye,
that is, to be single-mindedly devoted to God. Peter was walking on water, but when distracted by the wind
and waves, he took his eyes off Jesus and he began to sink. Don’t let worry distract you from focusing on
Jesus. The first step to overcoming worry is to focus.
The second step is to trust. Jesus told his listeners that they couldn’t serve more than one master: “You
can’t serve God and money.” Trust God to provide what you eat, drink and what you wear. God provides
food for the birds and clothes the lilies, so he certainly will provide for us, because we are more valuable than
the fowl or the flowers.
What does worry accomplish? Jesus asks in Matthew 6:27, “Who of you by worrying can add a single
hour to his life?” This can also be translated, “Who of you by worrying can add a single cubit to his height?”
Worrying won’t help you live longer or become taller, so why are you worrying? Luke’s gospel adds in chapter
12, verse 26, “Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?”
Worrying about tomorrow is called borrowing trouble. Jesus warns in Matthew 6:34, “Therefore do not
worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
Don’t worry but seek God’s kingdom and his righteousness (Matthew 6:33).
Don’t worry but pray. The same Greek word is used in
Philippians 4:6 (TLB): “Don’t worry about anything;
instead, pray about everything.” In some of the churches
I have pastored, I asked people to write down what
worried them. I then told them to rename their
worry list a prayer list. If you’re worrying about
something, tell God about it.
The same Greek word is translated in 1 Peter
5:7 (TLB). The last step to freedom from worry
is to cast all your worries or cares on the Lord
for he cares for you.
So, instead of worrying, focus on
the Lord, trust in the Lord, seek God’s
righteousness, cast all your worries on the
Lord and pray.

 Freedom From Conflict?

One of the freedoms we instinctively long for is

freedom from conflict. However, far too often our lives
are impacted by relational upheavals. Is freedom from
all conflict a possibility? It would seem that the biblical
answer is no. The end of conflict is directly connected to
the return of the King, who will make all things new and
right all wrongs. He himself promised us that he would
give us his peace as opposed to the peace that the world gives
(John 14:27). Yet, in almost the next breath, he warned
that in this world we would have tribulation (John 16:33
KJV). He didn’t say we might have tribulation, but rather
that we will. So, how should we live now? Until that
day, while we wait for his return, what are we to do with
conflict?
We have at least three unhealthy options. We can
pretend the conflict is not there; that is denial, a skill too
many of us have developed. We can wring our hands in
despair, which can be the result of allowing the news media instead of the Scripture to form our worldview.
Or, we can allow the presence of unresolved conflict to distort our hearts with bitterness, with a longing
for vengeance on our enemies and with a desire to play God (Romans 12:19). None of these three options
allows us the ability to transcend the situation, to experience the peace that Jesus offers, to find healing.
Sometimes conflict can be eliminated through following the biblical path of wisdom. True gospel-
centered reconciliation is a beautiful thing, and God still performs this miracle every day. Sometimes,
however, despite our best efforts conflicts remain. Perhaps the other party will not admit his contribution to
the situation. Are we stuck then, unable to move on? The Bible offers us a “way of escape” (1 Corinthians
10:13). Conflict is described throughout the Psalms of lament and picked up by Paul in the New Testament
(Romans 12:1-21). It involves five elements. First, we are honest with God about the pain we feel. Then,
we bring our honest desire for justice to him. As we come clean with him about our true heart condition,
often mysteriously, we spontaneously begin to
praise him. As our focus shifts to him, we are

America has become a society imprisoned by addictions. Drug and alcohol abuse in America has reached
a frightening epidemic level. According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, in 2011 an estimated
22.5 million Americans aged 12 or older, 8.7 percent of the population, had used an illicit drug or abused
a psychotherapeutic medication during the previous month. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and
Alcoholism has stated that 28.8 percent of women and 43.1 percent of men in America have participated in
binge drinking (consuming alcohol to extreme excess) at least once during the previous year. Many of these
substance abusers are addicted and live day after day in a numbed, confused reality, tragically diminishing their
intellects, destroying their relationships, and falling ever deeper into hopelessness, poverty and despair.
Secular experts cite various reasons for this increased desire to be oblivious and disconnected from reality.
Some blame the economic downturn, others point to the availability of drugs and alcohol, while yet others
argue the lack of social programs and treatment centers are to blame. These and other societal conditions
may be contributors, but ultimately addictions are not caused by situations outside the person, but rather by
deficiencies from within the person’s heart, the soul. Drugs and alcohol offer a counterfeit reality, a false world
where the user feels he or she is protected and the pains of life have been temporarily masked. The terrible
truth is that people under the influence of drugs and alcohol are actually at their most vulnerable, and the pain
they hope to avoid only grows. This bondage to a false world can be broken, but only by the author and creator
of what is truly real.
All addicts are searching for a way to happiness. They are trying desperately to find a truth that will satisfy
the longings of the soul to find a joyful and satisfying way of life. These longings are universal and to the user,
drugs and alcohol appear to meet them. In truth, this road to happiness is only a horrible illusion that leads
to a life of lies and deception, and the life they long for only leads to pain and eventual death. Satan has used
drugs and alcohol effectively, offering counterfeit fulfillments to God-given desires.
Freedom from addiction can only come through faith in Jesus Christ. He alone meets our deepest heartfelt
needs and desires. He alone is “the way and the truth and the life” we long for desperately. The apostle Paul
said it so perfectly in Galatians 5:1(KJV): “Stand fast therefore in the liberty
wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled
again with the yoke of bondage.” May everyone in
bondage to addictions be freed by him, the One who
truly meets all our needs, Jesus Christ!

Dwight Eisenhower said to Congress on January 9, 1959, “America is best described by one word,
America.” He was describing what he thought made America strong. Ideals in America were founded
on freedom, the principle that society is better off when ordinary people are given the means to achieve
extraordinary goals. I have listed here some of the ideals that make America strong.

THE CONSTITUTION
At the time of the inception of our Constitution, no nation had ever been self–governed. Nothing had
existed that was even close to our Constitution. America is ruled by her people, but the Founding Fathers
presupposed that those people would be generally virtuous and would have a common belief in God.
America is, in fact, based on unchangeable traditions and beliefs. These core convictions are enshrined in
the Bill of Rights, reflecting our nation’s founders’ absolute belief in freedom given to humanity by God.
America may be a work in progress, but only as that progress refines and opens to more individuals the
blessings of God–given freedom.

THE RIGHT TO VOTE

Although many may disagree, voting is our way of having a say in the politics of America. And yes our
vote counts! Election is like a trial and the voters are the judges. We cast our ballots as votes of confidence or
no confidence in our government. In practice, our liberty derives from the actual sovereignty of the people,
made possible by what we call the secret ballot.

OUR MILITARY
This is the military of George Washington, George Marshall and Dwight Eisenhower. This is a military
where everyone enters as equals. And what makes our military most special are the men and women who
have, for some reason, seen fit to risk their lives to keep America safe and strong.

OUR FAITH
“No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the invisible hand, which conducts the affairs of
men, more than the people of the United States.” (George Washington, First Inaugural Address, April 30,
1789) Our faith must be in the true and living God!

OUR PATRIOTISM
President Lincoln taught us that a nation divided cannot survive. True patriots are those who love,
support and defend the founding principles of our country. It is clear that in terms of terrorism, one is either
with us or against us. We should be just as clear with patriotism—you are either a patriot, one who supports
and defends America, or you are not a patriot.
However, at times true patriots are in opposition to the government or even the prevailing beliefs of the
American population. In the past, true patriots opposed laws that discriminated against individuals based
on their race or ethnicity. Although it is the law of the land, today, true patriots oppose abortion on demand
and fight for the lives of the unborn. The true patriot will always support the highest ideals of America’s
founders as they reflect the truth of God’s Word.

OUR EDUCATION
“Education then, beyond all other devices of human origin, is a great equalizer of conditions of men, the
balance–wheel of the social machinery.” (Horace Mann)

OUR GIVING
Contrary to those who think that generosity left with the good old days, the fact is, we still do our best
to help fellow Americans, in good times and in bad times. Every day acts of kindness are repeated in all
communities across the United States. We reach out in ways that range from billion dollar endowments to a
couple of hours a week having worship services for nursing home residents. We are a giving people.

OUR DIVERSITY
Ethnic and racial diversity can be great strengths, as they have enriched our nation enormously, but diversity
can also be a weakness. Not all diverse ideas and beliefs are good. When political or social movements are
against the standards set forth in the Bible, terrible things may happen and our nation is weakened by them.
Diversity for diversity’s sake is not always a positive thing.

OUR OPPORTUNITY
Our freedom to choose our destiny makes the United States a rare jewel among all nations. More than
any other country in the world, America is the land of opportunity. Most people have a better shot at
success in the United States than anywhere else in the world. That is why the term, the pursuit of happiness.
America cannot guarantee your happiness but she will do her best to give you the opportunity to experience
happiness for yourself.

OUR SPIRITUAL FREEDOM

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened
again by a yoke of slavery” (Galatians 5:1). The freedom Paul was talking about was spiritual freedom, the
liberation of those who live by the Spirit, not by worldly values. Our call to spiritual freedom requires that
we reject anything that will be a “yoke of slavery.” We must receive the mind of Christ.

THE TRUTH WILL SET US FREE

When we have the mind of Christ, we can know the truth and the truth can set us free! We must be free
from all our fears. It is only Christ who can set us free.

YOUR POWER OF CHOICE

Here are four ways that may help you remove anything that interferes with your spiritual freedom.
1. Pray and meditate on God’s Word daily: Get into God’s Word and God’s Word will get into you.
2. Ask God to reveal anything that is keeping you from your freedom in Christ. Acknowledge and let go of
what he reveals.
3. Have a great relationship with Jesus Christ: The power of Christ will pull down the strongholds in your
life and set you free.
4. Do what you love and do it as well as you can. Live for Christ, it will inspire you. Following him will
expand your mind and renew your strength. You will be freer than ever before.

The gift of spiritual freedom: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, the old has gone, the
new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17). May God bless you in all you endeavor to do for him!

...in U.S. Public Schools!

Since June 11, 2001, the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court case “Milford Central Schools v. Good
News Club” guarantees “equal access” to the use of public school property. This means that if a public school
allows any extra-curricular group to meet on campus, that school cannot deny access to Christian groups. This
landmark case legally opened the door of every elementary school in the United States to Child Evangelism
Fellowship’s Good News Club ministry.
What is a Good News Club? A GNC provides a fun-filled,
action-packed time when elementary-aged children learn about
the Gospel of Jesus Christ and have a blast at the same time!
Good News Clubbers learn that the Bible is 100% true, that
Jesus cares for them and that sin is anything we “think, say or
do that displeases God or breaks his laws.” They also learn that
they are sinners and how they can be saved from their sins!
Saved children are taught to be disciples of Jesus and to have
their quiet time with God every day and to memorize Scripture.
Good News Club is the only church service that many of these
kids have ever attended!
Lisa and I learned children’s ministry from Mrs. Cathy Peek, wife of Rev. Tim Peek (EMC elder). Weekly
participation in Good News Clubs is part of our ministry with the EMC Department of Multicultural
Ministries. What’s the connection between children’s ministry and multicultural ministry? I’m glad you asked!
We had a thrilling experience recently at the Good News Club in
Winder, Georgia. We were teaching the song “Yo Tengo Un Amigo
Que Me Ama” (I Have a Friend Who Really Loves Me) to the children.
It is sung in both Spanish and English. Lisa and I introduced the
song by speaking to the kids in Spanish. They became excited trying
to guess what language we were speaking. After a few sentences I
changed back to English and said, “Oops! I forgot what language I was
speaking! I spoke to you in Spanish. Do any of you speak a language
other than English?”
Nearly one-third of the 59 children present raised their hands!
These kids could speak Spanish, Swahili, Tsonga, Russian, Chinese,
Korean and Polish among others! This is an ordinary school district,
yet very ethnically diverse! This is probably happening in your school district, also! Are you aware of it? Are
you or your church making an effort to reach out to children outside your own ethnicity? You should, because
they are here!
Acts 17:26-27 teaches us that God brought the nations (ethne) of the world to America so that Christian
Americans will make disciples of them! We are to take the truth about Salvation by faith in Jesus to children
of diverse ethnic origin. Remember, “Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world! Red, brown,
yellow, black and white, they are precious in His sight!” Are you, like Jesus, occupied in our Father’s business?

What if we discover that the New Testament is an incomplete book?
Many Christians view the Old Testament in much the same way they do their appendix: as a useless
attachment which can cause them a good deal of trouble. Most sermons which are based on Scripture at all
are taken from the New Testament, and those which have an Old Testament text usually make its reading
their last reference to it; it simply provides a catchy jumping-off point.
Why is this? At least two reasons surface. First, the New Testament seems easier to understand and apply
directly to our lives without our having to know anything about its cultural or linguistic background. This
approach to reading the New Testament has, of course, led to many heresies and misreadings, but it can be
used. With many parts of the Old Testament, however, it is very difficult to understand the point being
made without some understanding of the background. Furthermore, many of the stories, while interesting
enough, don’t seem to offer much immediate guidance for Christian living.
A second reason for the Old Testament’s absence from much of contemporary Christianity is that many
Christians believe the New Testament has replaced the Old Testament. They think that the New Testament
contains all the truths one could find in the Old Testament—and then some. But even more, they think that
the New Testament corrects the Old Testament. They believe that the Old Testament teaches some things
which are improper or irrelevant for Christians. One minister, when a Sunday school teacher proposed a
series of lessons on the Ten Commandments, said, “Oh no, we’re Christians, we don’t believe that stuff!”
The upshot of this situation is that the Old Testament is, frankly, regarded as unnecessary. Why should
we take the time and trouble to try to understand the Old Testament when its (supposedly) improved
successor is (apparently) so much more accessible?
But suppose we discovered that the New Testament is an incomplete book? What then? Suppose the
New Testament does not contain all we need for life and godliness?
Would it then be worth taking the time and trouble to understand
“the rest of the story”? I think it would.
The notion that the New Testament is the revised edition
of the Old Testament (“This time the author got it right”) is
absolutely false. Neither is the New Testament a sequel to the
Old Testament (“Reading the preceding book helps one to
understand the sequel, but it’s not necessary”). No, the
New Testament is just the final chapter of the story. Do I
dare say I have understood, or even read, a book when
I have only become familiar with the last chapter? Of
course not! Yet many Christians have only read the
last chapter of The Book, and feel no need to get
into the rest of it.
What evidence tells us that the New
Testament is just the last chapter of the story?
Jesus specifically said that He had not come to
do away with “the Law” (the Old Testament)
but to fulfill it (Matt. 5:17). Paul said that the

Scriptures (the Old Testament) were inspired by God and profitable for reproof, correction and training in
righteousness (2 Tim. 3:16). Furthermore the entire New Testament roots itself in the Old Testament. From
Matthew 1 (the genealogy) to Revelation 22 (the tree of life-vv. 2 and 19), the New Testament painstakingly
refers to the preceding part of the revelation, the Old Testament. On every page it tells us that it is not
something new, but is precisely that to which the Old Testament points. Many of Paul’s difficulties would
never have happened if he had just done what the Jews demanded: admit that he was propagating a new
religion, different from their own, and leave them alone. But he would not. To the very end he insisted that
Jesus Christ—and not emerging Judaism—was what the Old Testament was really about. Thus, the only way
to really understand Jesus Christ and his work was to understand that which led up to him.
Both Paul and Jesus attacked not the Old Testament, but the Judaic misreading of it. When Judaism
said that keeping the Law was the way for a person to make himself or herself acceptable to God, they were
misunderstanding why the Law had been given. Just like the New Testament, the Old Testament teaches
that we enter into a relationship with God when we believe (in the sense of acting upon) the promises
of God. This was true for Abraham as well as for the children of Israel. Neither was reconciled to God
by law-keeping. It was only after they had entered into a relationship with God that the stipulations of the
covenant (the law) were presented to them as a means of expressing and living out the implications of
that relationship. (So, the command to be circumcised [Gen. 17] comes only after Abraham has believed
[Gen.15], and the Sinai law [Ex. 20-24] comes only after the Hebrews have received the grace of the
Exodus.)
Thus, the New Testament does not supersede the Old, but rather builds upon it. The New Testament
writers assume a knowledge of the Old Testament has prepared their readers. They don’t feel a need to restate
the questions. But if you don’t know what those questions are, it is very easy to take the answers somewhere
they were never meant to go. For instance, why did Christ come? If you only
know the New Testament, it is very possible that you will say He came so
that God could overlook the effects of our sins by seeing us through Jesus-
colored glasses. But the question is not how we can escape the effects
of our sins. The question, as the Old Testament makes painfully
clear, is how can I be holy as God is holy? Forgiveness of past sin
is certainly necessary, but that is only preliminary. The temple
must be cleansed, but then it must be filled. So, in each of the
four Gospels and again in Acts, we are told that the purpose
of Jesus’ coming was to fill us with the Holy Spirit. We
ought not to miss that even if we don’t know the Old
Testament; but if we do know the Old Testament we can’t
miss it.

 Tenth Anniversary
of Myanmar EMC
The 2013 Myanmar mission team, consisting of eight members, was
present for the “Tin Jubilee” (ten year anniversary) of the affiliation of the
Myanmar Evangelical Methodist Church with the Evangelical Methodist
Church International. The striking of the gong ten times and the retelling of
their birth brought tears of rejoicing. The women from the USA ministered
to the Myanmar Evangelical Methodist Women by holding seminars in
which the women were bonded together by their worship of God and a
time of foot washing. Mrs. Sandy Cross and Mrs. Judy Edwards conducted
seminars for the women. Judy also sang as part of the worship services.
Our first Evangelical Methodist Youth team member, Leah Milne, along
with her mother Donna, introduced the puppet ministry to the conference.
Puppets were left in Yangon and Tahan for future use by the young trainees.
The church in Yangon continues to be the center for outreach into the
southern area where villages were devastated by Cyclone Nargis. As a result
of their efforts in Kungyangon, a church has been established and property
secured for a building. This is the result of the Yangon church sharing food,
meeting other needs and making the Good News known. Two churches have
been added in other villages, thanks to water wells provided by the Yangon
church. The Kungyangon area needs two wells, and Tahan, bordering Chin
State, needs three wells. Local churches in the U.S. can participate in our
Adopt-a-Church ministry by raising funds to build a local EMC in Myanmar.
The amount needed for each building is approximately $5,000.00.
The Janell Sewing Center in Yangon reaches out to young women
enslaved by human trafficking. They are taught sewing skills, and through
Micro Credit ministry they can finance their own sewing business. Two
young women have successfully established their businesses and have paid
their debt. These two women attend our church, where the sewing center is
located. They came to know Christ and now use their new business to reach
other women with the gospel, and deliverance from prostitution.
The opening of Chin State to westerners will allow us to visit the areas
where the majority of our churches are located. Church members and pastors
travel a minimum of two days, one day walking and one by bus, to come to
the border in Tahan where headquarters and the Tahan church are located. We
are told to anticipate a thousand people at the conference in Chin State and
the need to rent a large tent when we hold our Annual Conference in Flam or
a neighboring area.
While in Myanmar, Superintendent Williamson preached four messages
and conducted the ordination service; Superintendent Thompson and
Board of World Missions chairman, Rev. Swearingen taught seminars;
Superintendent Edwards introduced the newly translated Catechism.

La Libertad en Cristo es uno de los conceptos mas malentendidos en el cristianismo. Muchos creen
que la libertad en Cristo es libertad de obligaciones y al mismo tiempo obediencia consistente a la
voluntad de Dios y a la Palabra. Pero, la libertad en Cristo nunca se describe de esa manera en la Biblia.
No se nos da licencia para vivir y actuar en la manera que nosotros escojamos. Mas bien, los cristianos
gozan de la libertad de la esclavitud del pecado. Nuestra libertad es la libertad para ser obedientes.
Nuestra esclavitud es ser simultáneamente esclavos a Dios, para amarlo y servirlo. Los Cristianos gozan
ambos, la libertad y la esclavitud.
Dios no quiere que estemos en esclavitud a nada y a nadie, excepto a él mismo. Esto requiere la obra
de la Entera Santificación en el creyente a través de la purificación del corazón de intereses propios.
A través de la santificación, el Espíritu Santo produce en el creyente amor divino para Dios y para el
mundo. Nuestro entendimiento de la santidad bíblica en la tradición Wesleyana afirma las motivaciones
de un corazón puro (Hechos 15:8-9). Nuestro único deseo es permanecer siendo esclavos de Cristo
donde hay verdadera libertad.
Los problemas se levantan cuando reemplazamos nuestra esclavitud a Dios con la esclavitud a
cualquier otra cosa. Un entendimiento falso de nuestra libertad nos llevará a esclavitud. ¿a quién o a

Libertad de la Adicción

América se ha convertido en una sociedad cautiva por las adicciones. El abuso de drogas y alcohol
en América ha alcanzado niveles alarmantes de epidemia. De acuerdo al Instituto Nacional de Abuso de
Drogas, en el 2011 se estimó que 22.5 millones de Americanos entre las edades de 12 o mayores, el 8.7 por
ciento de la población, había usado una droga ilícita o había abusado de medicina sicoterapéutica durante
el mes anterior. El Instituto Nacional de Abuso de Alcohol y Alcoholismo afirmó que el 28.8 por ciento de
mujeres y el 43.1 por ciento de hombres en América habían participado en sobredosis de bebidas (consumo
de alcohol en niveles exagerados) al menos una vez durante el año anterior. Muchos de quienes abusan de
substancias son adictos y viven día tras día en una realidad confusa y adormecida, reduciendo trágicamente
sus intelectos, destrozando sus relaciones y descendiendo mas profundo en la desesperación, pobreza y
miseria.
Los expertos seculares citan varias razones por este incremento en el deseo de ser invisible y desconectado
de la realidad. Algunos culpan a los cambios económicos, otros a la disponibilidad de drogas y alcohol,
mientras que otros argumentan que la falta de programas sociales y centros de tratamiento son los culpables.
Estas y otras condiciones sociales pueden contribuir, pero al final de cuentas las adicciones no son causadas
por situaciones fuera de la persona, pero mas bien, deficiencias dentro del corazón de la persona, en el alma.
Las drogas y el alcohol ofrecen una realidad falsa, un mundo falso donde el usuario siente que él o ella
están protegidos y los dolores de la vida han sido temporalmente cubiertos. La terrible verdad es que la gente
bajo la influencia de drogas y alcohol son en realidad muy vulnerables, y el dolor que buscan evitar solamente
lo acrecientan. Esta esclavitud a un mundo falso puede ser quebrada, pero solo por el autor y creador de lo
que es en realidad verdadero.
Todos los adictos están buscando un camino a la felicidad. Están tratando desesperadamente de hallar
una verdad que les satisfará los deseos del alma y encontrar una vida de gozo y satisfacción. Estos deseos

son universales y para el usuario, las drogas y el alcohol parecen dar la respuesta. En verdad, este camino
a la felicidad es solo una ilusión horrible que lleva a una vida de mentiras y decepción, y la vida que ellos
anhelan solo los lleva al dolor y eventualmente a la muerte misma. Satanás ha usado las drogas y el alcohol
efectivamente, ofreciendo falsas soluciones a los deseos normales dados por Dios.
La libertad de la adicción solo viene a través de la fe en Cristo Jesús. Solo él llena nuestros mas
profundos deseos y necesidades del corazón. Solo él es “el camino, la verdad y la vida” que necesitamos
desesperadamente. El apóstol Pablo lo dijo perfectamente en Gálatas 5:1. (RV 1960) “Estad, pues, firmes
en la libertad con que Cristo nos hizo libres, y no estés otra vez sujetos al yugo de esclavitud” Que todos
aquellos que están en esclavitud de adicciones, sean libres por él, aquél que verdaderamente llena nuestras
necesidades, ¡Cristo Jesús!

¿Libertad del Conflicto?

Una de las libertades que instintivamente anhelamos es la libertad del conflicto. Sin embargo, muy
seguido nuestras vidas son impactadas por cataclismos relaciones. ¿es posible la libertad de todo conflicto?
Pareciera ser que la respuesta bíblica es no. El fin del conflicto está directamente conectada con el regreso del
Rey, quien hará todo nuevo y enderezará todo lo torcido. Él mismo prometió que nos daría su paz, como
contrario a la paz que el mundo da (1 Juan 14:27). Sin embargo, casi en el siguiente respiro, él nos previene
que en este mundo tendréis tribulación (Juan 16:33). Él no dijo que podríamos tener tribulación, pero mas
bien que la vamos a tener. Entonces, ¿cómo debemos de vivir ahora? Hasta ese día, mientras esperamos su
regreso, ¿qué debemos hacer con el conflicto?
Tenemos al menos tres opciones nada saludables. Podemos pretender que no hay conflicto: eso es
negación, una habilidad que muchos de nosotros hemos desarrollado. Podemos abanicar nuestras manos
en desesperación, que puede ser el resultado de permitir a los medios de comunicación, en vez de la
Escritura que le de forma a nuestra cosmovisión. O, podemos permitir la presencia de conflicto no resuelto
distorsionar nuestro corazón con amargura, con deseos de venganza sobre nuestros enemigos y con gran
deseo de hacerla de Dios (Romanos 12:19). Ninguna de estas tres opciones nos permiten la habilidad de
transcender la situación, para experimentar la paz que Jesús ofrece, para encontrar la sanidad.
Algunas veces el conflicto puede ser eliminado a través de seguir el camino bíblico de sabiduría.
Verdadera reconciliación centrada en el evangelio es algo hermoso, y Dios todavía hace este milagro cada
día. Algunas veces, sin embargo, a pesar de nuestros mejores esfuerzos, el conflicto permanece. Tal vez la
otra parte no tiene deseos de tomar su responsabilidad en la situación. ¿Entonces nos quedamos detenidos
sin podernos mover? La Biblia nos ofrece una “manera de escapar” (1 Corintios 10:13). El Conflicto se
describe a través de los Salmos de lamento y es retomado por Pablo en el Nuevo Testamento (Romanos
12:1-21). Involucra cinco elementos. Primero, debemos ser honestos con Dios sobre el dolor que sentimos.
Entonces, traemos nuestro deseo honesto de justicia a él. Mientras ajustamos cuentas delante de él acerca de
la verdadera condición de nuestro corazón, muy seguido y misteriosamente, espontáneamente comenzamos
a alabarlo. Mientras nuestro enfoque se centra en él, se nos da una nueva revelación de su carácter, de que a
él le preocupa nuestra situación y que él es justo. Recordando lo que él es, nosotros podemos “echar nuestra
ansiedad sobre él, porque él tiene cuidado de nosotros” (1 Pedro 5:7). Así que, la oración es nuestro medio
para entrar en la paz de Jesús en medio de un mundo lleno de conflicto. ¿Libertad de conflicto? No, pero,
Shalom mientras esperamos su regreso.

 ¿Quién Necesita el Antiguo Testamento?

¿qué pasa si descubrimos que el Nuevo Testamento es un libro incompleto?

Muchos cristianos ven el Antiguo Testamento de la misma manera como ven su apéndice: como
una añadidura inútil que les puede causar grandes problemas. La mayoría de los sermones basados en la
Escritura son todos tomados del Nuevo Testamento, y aquellos que tienen un texto del Antiguo Testamento,
usualmente hacen de su lectura la última referencia; proveyendo simplemente un punto de partida
interesante.
¿Porqué es esto? Al menos dos razones saltan a la vista. Primero, el Nuevo Testamento parece ser mas
fácil de entender y de aplicarlo directamente a nuestras vidas sin tener mucho que saber sobre su trasfondo
lingüístico o cultural. Esta manera de leer el Nuevo Testamento ha, por supuesto, guiado a muchas herejías y
malentendidos al leerlo, pero puede ser usado así. Con muchas partes del Antiguo Testamento, sin embargo,
es muy difícil de entender el tema tratado sin tener algún conocimiento del trasfondo. Mas aún, muchas de
las historias, aunque son muy interesantes, no parecen ofrecer dirección inmediata para la vida cristiana.
Una segunda razón para la ausencia del Antiguo Testamento en el Cristianismo contemporáneo es que
muchos Cristianos creen que el Nuevo Testamento reemplazó al Antiguo Testamento. Ellos piensan que

Diez Mandamientos, dijo, “Oh, no, nosotros somos Cristianos y no creemos ese tipo de cosas!”
El punto de esta situación es que el Antiguo Testamento es, francamente, visto como innecesario.
¿Porqué deberíamos de tomar el tiempo y esfuerzo de tratar de entender el Antiguo Testamento cuando su
(supuestamente) sucesor actualizado es (aparentemente) mucho mas accesible?
Pero, ¿suponiendo que descubrimos que el Nuevo Testamento es un libro incompleto? ¿entonces qué
pasaría? Suponiendo que el Nuevo Testamento no contiene todo lo que necesitamos para la vida y para la
piedad¿ ¿entonces no valdría la pena tomar el tiempo y esfuerzo para entender “el resto de la historia”? Yo
creo que si.
La noción de que el Nuevo Testamento es la edición revisada del Antiguo Testamento (“esta vez el autor
acertó”) es absolutamente falsa. Ni es el Nuevo Testamento el desenlace del Antiguo Testamento (“leyendo
el libro anterior ayuda a uno entender la secuencia, pero no es necesario”) No, el Nuevo Testamento es
solo el capítulo final de la historia. ¿Me atrevería a decir que entiendo o leo un libro cuando solo me he
familiarizado con el último capítulo? Por supuesto que no! Y sin embargo, muchos Cristianos han leído
solamente el último capítulo de El Libro, y sienten que no hay necesidad de continuar con el resto de el.
¿qué evidencia nos dice que el Nuevo Testamento es solo el último capítulo de la historia? Jesús
específicamente dijo que El no había venido a abrogar la “ley” (el Antiguo Testamento) pero a cumplirla
(Mateo 5:17) Pablo dijo que las Escrituras (el Antiguo Testamento) fue inspirado por Dios y de provecho
para redargüir, corregir e instruir en justicia (2 Timoteo 3:16). Mas que esto, el Nuevo Testamento entero
tiene sus raíces mismas en el Antiguo Testamento. Desde Mateo 1 (La genealogía) hasta el Apocalípsis 22
(el árbol de vida-vv. 2 y 19), el Nuevo Testamento minuciosamente se refiere a la parte precedente de la
revelación, el Antiguo Testamento. En cada página nos dice que no es algo nuevo, pero es precisamente lo
que el Antiguo Testamento esta señalando. Muchas de las dificultades de Pablo no hubieran sucedido si tan
solo hubiera hecho lo que los judíos demandaban: admitir que él estaba propagando una nueva religión,
diferente de la de ellos, y dejarlos en paz. Pero no lo hizo. Hasta el mero final él insistió que Jesucristo – y
no el Judaísmo emergente- era de lo que el Antiguo Testamento se trataba. Entonces, la única manera de

realmente entender a Jesucristo y su obra era entender aquello que guiaba hacia él.
Ambos, Pablo y Jesús atacaron no al Antiguo Testamento, pero al mal entendimiento al leerlo. Cuando
el Judaísmo decía que el guardar la ley era la manera para que una persona fuera aceptable ante Dios, ellos
erraron el punto de porqué la Ley fue dada. Igual como el Nuevo Testamento, el Antiguo Testamento
enseña que nosotros entramos a una relación con Dios cuando creemos (en el sentido de tomar acción)
en las promesas de Dios. Esto fue cierto para Abraham tanto como para los hijos de Israel. Ninguno fue
reconciliado con Dios por guardar la Ley. Solo fue posible después de que habían entrado a una relación
con Dios y habían vivido las implicaciones de esa relación. (así que, el mandamiento para ser circuncidado
(Génesis 17)vino después de que Abraham creyó (Génesis 15), y la ley en el Sinaí (Éxodo 20-24) viene
solamente después que los Hebreos había recibido la gracia del Éxodo.)
Así que, el Nuevo Testamento no invalida el Antiguo, pero mas bien edifica sobre el. Los escritores del
Nuevo Testamento asumieron que el conocimiento del Antiguo Testamento había preparado a sus lectores.
No sintieron la necesidad de volver a hacer las preguntas. Pero si no sabes cuáles son esas preguntas, es muy
fácil tomar las respuestas de dónde se suponía que no debían de venir. Por ejemplo, ¿porqué vino Jesús? Si
solo conoces el Nuevo testamento, es muy probable que tu dirás que El vino para que Dios pudiera pasar
por alto los efectos de nuestros pecados mirándonos a través de los lentes de color de Jesús. Pero la pregunta
no es cómo podemos escapar los efectos de nuestros pecados. La pregunta, como el Antiguo Testamento lo
hace detalladamente claro es ¿cómo puedo yo ser santo como Dios es santo? El perdón de nuestro pecado
pasado es ciertamente necesario, pero eso es solo preliminar. El templo debe ser limpiado, pero luego debe
ser llenado. Así que en cada uno de los cuatro Evangelios y también en Hechos, se nos dice que el propósito
de la venida de Jesús era para llenarnos con el Espíritu Santo. No debemos olvidar que aún si nosotros no
conocemos el Antiguo Testamento; pero si nosotros verdaderamente conocemos el Antiguo Testamento no
podemos pasarlo por alto.

Libertad Genuina

“Dame la libertad o dame la muerte” este parece ser el corazón del clamor de cada ser humano en todo el
mundo. Dios nos creó libres y cada persona anhela ejercitar este precioso don de Dios. Desafortunadamente,
mucha gente, incluyendo los cristianos, no entienden completamente la verdadera naturaleza de esta libertad
dada a nosotros por nuestro Creador.
Mucha gente piensa que la libertad les permite hacer lo que sea que ellos quieran y de la manera que a
ellos les gusta. Pero el hecho es que para que la libertad prevalezca, hay ciertas reglas básicas.
La mayoría de nosotros manejamos automóviles. Nuestra expectación es manejar confiadamente,
llegar a nuestro destino con toda seguridad. Sin embargo, para que esto suceda, todos los choferes deben
obedecer las leyes del tráfico. Si una persona no sigue las reglas, puede causar un accidente. ¿Puedes imaginar
el caos y catástrofe si el piloto de un avión crea sus propias reglas para volar?
Tristemente, algunas personas aplican su actitud libre que es potencialmente destructiva al manejar a su
actitud hacia su propia vida espiritual, y al pecado. El pecado acarrea consecuencias. El pecado tiene el poder
de controlar y dominar a la gente. Pablo describe esta condición como “el cuerpo del pecado”. Cuerpo no
se refiere solo al cuerpo físico aquí, sino a la persona en su totalidad. Pablo, en 1 de Corintios 6:19 dice “¿O
ignoráis que vuestro cuerpo es templo del Espíritu Santo, el cual está en vosotros, el cual tenéis de Dios, y

que no sois vuestros?” en otras palabras, el Espíritu Santo vive dentro del cuerpo del creyente. En Romanos
6:6 dice, “…sabiendo esto, que nuestro viejo hombre fue crucificado juntamente con él, para que el cuerpo
del pecado sea destruido, a fin de que no sirvamos más al pecado” cuerpo de pecado indica que nuestra
persona total esta controlada por el pecado, y así, no tenemos la libertad para no pecar. Cuando el cuerpo del
pecado es destruido por Dios, somos hechos libres del control del pecado.
En Romanos 5:20-21 Pablo escribe, “Pero la ley se introdujo para que el pecado abundase; mas cuando el
pecado abundó, sobreabundó la gracia; para que así como el pecado reinó para muerte, así también la gracia
reine por la justicia para vida eterna mediante Jesucristo, Señor nuestro” algunos piensan que ya que hemos
sido hechos libres, somos libres para pecar, particularmente porque Pablo dice, “donde abundó el pecado,
sobreabundó la gracia” estas personas tienen un concepto falso acerca de la gracia. Ellos piensan que la gracia
es un favor inmerecido. Eso es verdad. Sin embargo, la gracia no es solamente un favor inmerecido, sino
también es poder. Cuando Pablo le pidió a Dios que removiera la espina en su carne, Dios le dijo, “mi gracia
es suficiente para ti, porque mi poder se perfecciona en la debilidad” (2 Corintios 12:9) la gracia de Dios
es poder, es poder para resistir el pecado. Si nosotros experimentamos la gracia de Dios en el perdón de los
pecados, esta gracia de Dios también nos da el poder para resistir el pecado, para que nosotros no tengamos
que volver a pecar. Nosotros podemos vivir la vida de victoria sobre el pecado descrita en el capítulo ocho de
Romanos. En Romanos 6:18, Pablo escribió “…y libertados del pecado, vinisteis a ser siervos de la justicia”
Esto indica que lo contrario del pecado es la justicia. El pecado es injusticia. Pablo describe y analiza el
pecado de la raza humana en Romanos 1:18-3:20. En Romanos 1:18 él escribió, “Porque la ira de Dios se
revela desde el cielo contra toda impiedad e injusticia de los hombres que detienen con injusticia la verdad”
Pablo continúa describiendo cómo los Gentiles rehusaron tener una buena relación con Dios. Ellos
adoraron a los ídolos antes que al verdadero y Dios viviente. Como resultado, ellos no trataron a los otros
seres humanos de acuerdo a la voluntad de Dios, ellos no obedecieron la ley de Dios. Así que los Judíos no
tenían una buena relación con Dios tampoco. Después que el se dirigió al comportamiento malvado de
los Gentiles y de los Judíos, en Romanos 3:23 Pablo afirmó “por cuanto todos pecaron y están destituidos
de la gloria de Dios” el pecado es injusticia, estar en una mala relación con Dios y con los seres humanos
compañeros nuestros. La justicia es tener una buena relación, buena relación con Dios es lo mas importante.
Por eso Pablo también escribió en Romanos 6:22 “Mas ahora que habéis sido libertados del pecado y hechos
siervos de Dios…” ser siervos de la justicia significa ser siervos de Dios.
El resultado inevitable de ser hechos libres del poder del pecado es llegar a ser siervos de la justicia, esto
también implica que ser siervos de la justicia es el medio por el cual somos hechos libres del pecado.
Para disfrutar la verdadera libertad no es hacer lo que sea que queramos hacer y de la manera que
queramos hacerlo, sino llegar a ser siervos de la justicia, siervos de Dios.

 El evangelio para los hijos de las Naciones….
En las Escuelas Públicas de los E.U.A.

Desde junio 11 del 2001, la decisión de la Suprema Corte de los E.U.A. del caso “Milford Central
Schools vs. Good News Club” garantiza “acceso igual” al uso de la propiedad de la escuela pública. Esto
quiere decir que si una escuela pública permite a cualquier grupo extra curricular a reunirse en las premisas
de las escuelas, esa escuela no puede negar el acceso a los grupos cristianos. Este caso abrió legalmente la
puerta de cada escuela primaria en los Estados Unidos para el Child Evangelism Fellowship (Compañerismo
Evangelístico Infantil) con el ministerio del Good News Club. (Club Buenas Nuevas)
¿qué es el ministerio Good News Club? Un GNC provee un tiempo de acción y diversión donde los
niños de edad primaria aprenden acerca de Jesucristo y tienen un tiempo formidable a la ves! Los miembros
del Good News Club aprenden que la Biblia es 100% verdad, que Jesús les ama y que el pecado es todo
aquello que nosotros “pensamos, decimos o hacemos que no le agrada a Dios o que quebranta sus leyes”.
Ellos también aprenden que son pecadores y cómo pueden ser salvos de sus pecados! A los niños salvos se les
enseña a ser discípulos de Jesús y a tener un tiempo quieto con Dios cada día y a memorizar la Escritura. El
Good News Club es el único servicio de Iglesia que estos niños han asistido!
Lisa y yo aprendimos el ministerio infantil de la hermana Cathy Peek, esposa del Rev. Tim Peek (un
presbítero de la I.M.E.). Nuestra participación semanal en los Good News Clubs es parte de nuestro
ministerio en el Departamento de Ministerio Multiculturales de la I.M.E. Cuál es la relación entre el
ministerio infantil y el ministerio multicultural? Que bueno que preguntaron!
Recientemente tuvimos una experiencia emocionante en el Good News Club en Winder, Georgia. Les
estábamos enseñando el canto “Yo tengo un amigo que me ama” a los niños, se canta en ambos, español e
Inglés. Lisa y yo introdujimos el canto hablándoles a los niños en Español. Ellos se emocionaron tratando de
entender el idioma en el que estábamos hablando. Después de varias frases cambié al Inglés y dije, “Oops! Se
me olvidó el idioma en el que estaba hablando! Yo les hablé en Español. ¿Alguno de ustedes hablan en otro
idioma aparte del Inglés?
Cerca de una tercera parte de los 59 niños presentes levantaron sus manos! Estos niños podían hablar
en Español, Swahili, Bantu, Ruso, Chino y Coreano entre otros! Este es un distrito escolar ordinario, sin
embargo étnicamente diverso! Esto esta probablemente sucediendo en tus distritos escolares también! ¿Estás
consciente de eso? Han hecho, ustedes o su iglesia un esfuerzo para alcanzar a los niños fuera de tu propia
etnicidad? Tu deberías hacerlo, porque ellos ya están aquí!
En Hechos 17:26-27 se nos enseña que Dios trajo las naciones (ethne) del mundo a América para que los
Cristianos Americanos los hicieran discípulos! Debemos de llevar la verdad sobre la Salvación por fe en Jesús
a los niños de diversos orígenes étnicos. Recuerda, “Cristo ama a los niñitos, a todos por igual, no importa
su color… Rojizo, café, amarillo, negro o blanco, son objeto de su amor” ¿estás tu, como Jesús, ocupado en
los negocios de tu Padre? Contáctanos para aprender cómo iniciar y patrocinar un Good News Club en tu
Escuela Primaria local.

 Décimo Aniversario de la Iglesia Metodista Evangélica
en Myanmar
El equipo de Myanmar 2013, que consistió de ocho miembros estuvo presente para el “Tin Jubilee”
(Décimo Aniversario) de la afiliación de la Iglesia Metodista Evangélica de Myanmar con la Iglesia Metodista
Evangélica Internacional. El toque del gong diez veces y la remembranza del nacimiento de la Iglesia, trajo
lágrimas de gozo. Las mujeres de los E.U.A. ministraron a la Femenil de Myanmar de la Iglesia Metodista
Evangélica, teniendo seminarios en los cuales las mujeres fueron unidas en la adoración a Dios y una
ceremonia del lavamiento de pies. Las hermanas Sandy Cross y Judy Edwards dirigieron seminarios para las
mujeres. Judy también canto como parte de los servicios de adoración.
Nuestro miembro del equipo de la Juventud Metodista Evangélica, Leah Milne, junto con su mamá
Donna, introdujeron el ministerio de puppets a la conferencia. Los puppets fueron dejados en Yangon y
Tahan para el uso futuro de los entrenadores juveniles.
La iglesia en Yangon continúa siendo el centro de alcance en el área sureste donde las aldeas fueron
devastadas por el huracán Nargis, como resultado de sus esfuerzos en Kungyangon, una iglesia ha sido
establecida y la propiedad asegurada para un edificio. Este es el resultado de la Iglesia en Yangon al compartir
comida, llenando otras necesidades y dando a conocer las Buenas Nuevas. Dos iglesias mas han sido añadidas
en otras aldeas, gracias a los pozos de agua provistos por la Iglesia en Yangon. El área de Kungyangon necesita
dos pozos , y Tahan, en la frontera del Estado Chin, necesita tres pozos. La iglesias locales en los Estados
Unidos pueden participar en nuestro ministerio de Adopta-una-Iglesia levantando fondos para construir
un local de la I.M.E. en Myanmar. La cantidad necesitada para cada construcción es de aproximadamente
$5,000.00 dólares.
El Centro de Costura Janell en Yangon, alcanza a mujeres jóvenes en esclavitud del tráfico humano.
Se les enseña habilidades de costura, y a través del Ministerio de Micro Crédito ellas pueden financiar su
propio negocio de costura. Dos mujeres jóvenes han establecido exitosamente sus negocios y han pagado sus
deudas. Estas dos mujeres asisten a nuestra iglesia, donde el centro de costura está localizado. Ellas vinieron
al conocimiento de Cristo y ahora usan su nuevo negocio para alcanzar a otras mujeres con el evangelio,
dándoles libertad de la prostitución.
La apertura del Estado Chin a los occidentales nos permitirá visitar las áreas donde la mayoría de nuestras
iglesias se encuentran. Los miembros de la Iglesia y los pastores viajan un mínimo de dos días caminando
y un día en autobús para llegar a la frontera en Tahan donde las oficinas generales y la Iglesia de Tahan se
localiza. Se nos dijo que anticipáramos un total de mil personas asistiendo a la Conferencia del Estado Chin
y la necesidad de rentar una carpa grande donde reunirnos para la Conferencia Anual en Flam o alguna área
vecina.
Mientras estábamos en Myanmar, el Superintendente Williamson predicó cuatro mensajes y condujo la
ceremonia de ordenación; el Superintendente Thompson y el presidente de la Junta de Misiones Mundiales,
el Rev. Sweringen enseñaron seminarios; el Superintendente Edwards introdujo el catecismo recién
traducido.
Libertad en América

Dwight Eisenhower le dijo al Congreso en Enero 9, 1959, “América se describe mejor en una palabra,
América”. Él estaba describiendo lo que el pensó hizo a América fuerte. Los ideales en América fueron
fundados en la libertad, el principio de que la sociedad es mejor cuando a la gente ordinaria se le dan los
medios para alcanzar metas extraordinarias. El siguiente es un listado de algunos de los ideales que hacen que
América sea fuerte.

 LA CONSTITUCION
Al tiempo del establecimiento de nuestra Constitución, ninguna nación había sido autogobernada, nada
había existido antes que se pareciera a nuestra Constitución. América es gobernada por su gente, pero los
Padres Fundadores presupusieron que esa gente sería generalmente virtuosa y tendrían una creencia común
en Dios. De hecho, América está basada en las creencias y tradiciones incambiables. Esas son las convicciones
medulares encapsuladas en la Declaración de Derechos, reflejando la creencia absoluta de los fundadores de
nuestra nación en la libertad dada a la humanidad por Dios.
América puede ser una obra en progreso, pero solo cuando ese progreso se refina y abra a mas individuos
las bendiciones de la libertad dada por Dios.

EL DERECHO A VOTAR
Aunque muchos pueden no estar de acuerdo, el votar es nuestra manera de tener algo que decir en las
políticas de América. Y si, nuestro voto cuenta! Las elecciones son como un tribunal y los votantes son los
jueces. Depositamos nuestras cédulas como votos de confianza o desconfianza en nuestro gobierno. En la
práctica, nuestra libertad se deriva de la soberanía real de la gente, hecha posible por lo que llamamos el voto
secreto.

LA MILICIA
Esta es la milicia de George Washington, George Marshall y Dwight Eisenhower. Esta es la milicia donde
todos entran como iguales. Y lo que hace nuestra milicia mas especial, son lo hombres y mujeres que son, por
alguna razón, hallados capaces de arriesgar sus vidas para conservar a América segura y fuerte.

NUESTRA FE
“No hay gente que se haya comprometido a reconocer y adorar la mano invisible, que conduce los
asuntos de los hombres mas que la gente de los Estados Unidos” (George Washington, en su discurso de
inauguración). Nuestra fe debe estar puesta en el verdadero Dios viviente!

NUESTRO PATRIOTISMO
El Presidente Lincoln nos enseñó que una nación dividida no puede sobrevivir. Los verdaderos patriotas
son aquellos que aman, apoyan y defienden los principios fundamentales de nuestro país. Está claro, que
en términos del terrorismo, o se está a favor de nosotros o en contra de nosotros. Deberíamos ser claros en
cuanto al patriotismo – tu o eres patriota, uno que apoya y defiende a América, o tu no eres un patriota.
Sin embargo, a veces los verdaderos patriotas se encuentran en oposición al gobierno o aún contra las
verdades sostenidas por la población Americana. En el pasado, los verdaderos patriotas se opusieron a leyes
que discriminaban en contra de individuos basadas en su raza o grupo étnico. Aunque sea la ley del país, los
verdaderos patriotas se oponen al aborto y luchan por las vidas de los nonatos. El verdadero patriota siempre
apoyará los mas altos ideales de los fundadores de América como están reflejados en la Palabra de Dios.

NUESTRA EDUCACION
“la educación entonces, mas allá de otras estrategias de origen humano, es un gran ecualizador de las
condiciones de los hombres, el engrane de balance en la maquinaria social.” (Horace Mann)

NUESTROS DONATIVOS
Contrario a aquellos que piensan que la generosidad se fue junto con los buenos años de antaño, el
hecho es, que todavía hacemos lo mejor que podemos para ayudar a conciudadanos Americanos, en buenos
tiempos así como en malos tiempos. A diario, actos de bondad se repiten por todas las comunidades en

Estados Unidos. Alcanzamos a otros en maneras que van desde fundaciones de billones de dólares hasta dos
horas de servicio a la semana teniendo servicios de adoración en los asilos de ancianos. Somos gente que da.

NUESTRA DIVERSIDAD
La diversidad étnica y racial pueden ser grandes fortalezas, que han enriquecido nuestra nación de una
manera enorme, pero la diversidad también puede ser una debilidad. No todas las ideas diversas y creencias
son buenas. Cuando los movimientos políticos y sociales están en contra de los estándares establecidos en
la Biblia, cosas muy terribles pueden pasar y nuestra nación es debilitada a causa de eso. Diversidad por el
hecho de ser diversidad no siempre es algo positivo.

NUESTRA OPORTUNIDAD
Nuestra libertad para escoger nuestro destino, hace a los Estados Unidos una rara joya entre todas las
naciones. Mas que cualquier otro país en el mundo, América es la tierra de las oportunidades. La mayoría de
las personas tienen una buena oportunidad de éxito en los Estados Unidos mas que en cualquier otra parte
del mundo. Esa es la razón de la frase, la búsqueda de la felicidad. América no puede garantizar tu felicidad
pero si hará lo posible para darte la oportunidad de experimentar felicidad por ti mismo.

NUESTRA LIBERTAD ESPIRITUAL

“es para tener libertad que Cristo nos ha hecho libres, Estad, pues, firmes en la libertad con que Cristo
nos hizo libres, y no estéis otra vez sujetos al yugo de esclavitud” (Gálatas 5:1).
La libertad que Pablo estaba hablando era libertad espiritual, la liberación de aquellos que viven por el
Espíritu, no por los valores terrenales. Nuestro llamado a la libertad espiritual requiere que rechacemos todo
aquello que puede ser un “yugo de esclavitud”. Debemos recibir la mente de Cristo.

LA VERDAD NOS HARA LIBRES

Cuando tenemos la mente de Cristo, podemos conocer la verdad y la verdad nos hará libres. Debemos
ser libres de todos nuestros temores. Solo Cristo puede hacernos libres.
Tu poder de elección: aquí hay cuatro maneras que te pueden ayudar a remover cualquier cosa que
interfiera con tu libertad espiritual.
1. ora y medita en la Palabra de Dios diariamente: métete en la Palabra de Dios y la Palabra de Dios se
meterá en ti.
2. Pídele a Dios que te revele todo aquello que te está deteniendo en tu libertad en Cristo. Reconoce y
suelta aquello que él te revele.
3. Desarrolla una relación formidable con Jesucristo: el poder de Cristo derribará las fortalezas en tu
vida y te hará libre.
4. Has lo que tanto amas y hazlo lo mejor que puedas. Vive para Cristo, te va a inspirar. Siguiéndole a
él, va a expandir tu mente y renovar tu fuerza. Vas a ser mas libre que antes.

El don de la libertad espiritual: “De modo que si alguno está en Cristo, nueva criatura es; las cosas viejas
pasaron; he aquí todas son hechas nuevas” (2 Corintios 5:17). Que Dios te bendiga en todo aquello que
haces para él.
