Course Outline

Signals and Systems

Objective: To provide understanding of signals, systems and transforms.

Course Outline:
Continuous time and discrete time signals, periodic signals, even and odd signals,
exponential and sinusoidal signals, the unit impulse and unit step functions, continues
time and discrete time systems, linear time invariant (LTI) systems, difference equation,
causality, BIBO stability, convolution and correlation, discrete time Fourier transforms,
time and frequency characterization of signals and systems, the sampling theorem,
aliasing, sampling the discrete time signals, z-transform, analysis and characterization of
LTI systems using z-transform, case studies: communication systems and linear
feedback systems. Introduction to Analog filter design.

Assignments:
Two to three assignments are given to students before mid-papers and same number of
assignments are given after the mid till final exams. Main purpose of these assignments
is to develop problem solving capability among students. Topic of assignments are
selected very carefully so that students get maximum benefit from it. At the end of
semester, two best assignments are selected among them.
Quizzes:
Approximately 3 to 4 quizzes are taken before mid-exams and similar number are taken
after mid till final exams. Most of quizzes are taken from the topic of assignments. In this
way, problem of plagiarism in assignment is also solved. Students get grades in
assignment according to the quizzes. In this way they try to learn and acquire knowledge
delivered in assignment. At the end of semester, quizzes with lower grades are dropped.

Presentations:
Students are given different topics to present in class. Students are given fixed time in
which they try to explain their topic. Topic of presentation is always related to the course
contents. Topic with greater complexity is given to a group of 2 or 3 students. Main
purpose of this presentation is to develop confidences in students.
Marks distribution:
Marks are distributed among students in following way:
1. Sessional marks = 30 Marks
a) Attendance = 5 Marks
b) Presentation = 5 Marks
c) Assignments = 10 Marks
d) Quizzes = 10 Marks
2. Mid-Term Exams = 30 Marks
3. Final Exams = 40 Marks
