•What happened in the Cavite Mutiny?

The Cavite Mutiny 1872, this event was an essential part in the Philippine history
because it sparked the start of the resistance against the authority for Philippine Independence in
1898. During the Spanish colonization, tax reforms were implemented that required the soldiers
to serve the army and pay taxes.

A Mutiny led by Sergeant LA Madrid and 200 Filipino troops and workers at the Cavite
arsenal, the mutiny was quickly crushed, but the Spanish regime under the reactionary governor
Rafael de Izquierdo magnified the incident and used it as an excuse to clamp down on those
Filipinos who had been calling for governmental reform. which became the excuse for Spanish
repression of the embryonic Philippine nationalist movement. Ironically, the harsh reaction of the
Spanish authorities served ultimately to promote the nationalist cause.

The Cavite Mutiny led to the persecution of prominent Filipinos; secular priests Mariano
Gómez, José Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora who would then be collectively named GomBurZa
were tagged as the masterminds of the uprising, after a brief trial, three priests José Burgos,
Jacinto Zamora, and Mariano Gómez were publicly executed. The three subsequently became
martyrs to the cause of Philippine independence.

Reaction/Comment
As a Filipino the Cavite Mutiny made a great role in our Independence because it served
as a starting step of the revolution. The mutiny signifies the eagerness of the Filipinos that time
to free from the Spanish Colonization, the downside of the mutiny was they didn’t planned
enough the revolution and they failed.

Conclusion
Many patriots named and unnamed shed their bloods to attain reforms and achieve
independence. 12 June 1898 may be a glorious event for us, but we should not forget that before
we came across to victory, our forefathers suffered enough. As we enjoy our freedom, may we
be more historically aware of our past to have a better future ahead of us.

CASE STUDY 3
•Did Rizal Retract?
The document referred to as “the refraction” who was allegedly signed by Jose Rizal
before his execution. This is being hotly debated as to its authenticity. “I retract with all of my
hearth whatever in my words writings, publications and conducts has been contrary to my
character as a son of Catholic Church”
This statement was in document which made historians believed that Rizal refracted regardless
of these claims there are several people who believed that these refraction document are
authentic, there people are present when Rizal wrote his refraction, there are many witnesses and
most of them are Jesuits.

Reaction/Comment
Any piece of writing from Rizal recants everything he wrote against the Friars & the
Catholic Church in the Philippines could deal heavy damage to his image as prominent Filipino
revolutionary. Jose Rizal has been a national iconic hero over a hundred years ago & and became
the symbol of our freedom & patriotism.

Conclusion
Dr. Jose Rizal Alleged Refraction: How could this be? It could be, for there was no other
recourse. It could be for the moth had burned its wings, it could be for the circumstances &
people had connived. It would not be completely so. The man they had just martyred was a man
whose politics & facts where unshakable & timeless. As we know the history recounts.
The issue of refraction remains contentious for some people, it is my opinion that there is
no controversy that Rizal did not made any recantations of his writings & belongings, it should
not be beyond the Catholic Church to now about the falls fraud it had compiled in saying that Dr.
Jose Rizal had Adjunct his writings & belongings, when all evidences point to the fact that he did
not!
Let us not allow the stand of time to cover the blunder of the noble & impious even in
history.
