INTRODUCTION

A. Background of Study

Developmental psychology is a branch of individual psychology, both before and after

birth following the maturity of developmental psychological behavior is the study of the
characteristics of each phase of development. In writing this paper to determine the
characteristics of the development of adolescent phase, what are the things that affect the
developmental psychology in the adolescent phase.

A person is composed on the basis of physical and spiritual fatalities, in addition there are
factors of temperament, character, and talents of one's physical physicality depending on the
construction of the body that is affected by factors of heredity so that his condition can be
said to be fixed or constant and is a life force that is physical in nature.

Nowadays psychology is needed in every human, especially for a student (ABG) and in
adults. therefore, especially for psychologists, they must know what the meaning of
development and personality is, so that in providing solutions to clients can place on the
appropriate targets, because, in the development and personality of each human being is an
aid to provide students in finding personal, familiar with the environment and plan for a
better future. Provision of this assistance can be done through a variety of ways, one of the
materials that can be used, for example, given the opportunity to read and study a book on
manners, effective learning methods, discipline and so on. Psychology also has a variety of
designations and continues to develop over time. This psychology aims to make students

DISCUSSION

A. The Understanding of Individual Personality

1. Development

This means that development problems are often inseparable from growth problems.
Both of them do have something in common and have something to do. A growth will
eventually "finish" all organisms reach pure physicality, but development continues
throughout life. Thus, development is a process of psychological changes (traits) that
continually go in a direction that is the organization or structure of behavior at a higher level
of integration through the learning process.

2. Personality

Defining personality is actually not an easy thing because personality is something

abstract. Here the author will try to put forward some notions of personality as follows:

a. G. Allport argues "Personality is the dynamic organization within the individual of those
psychophycal systems, that determines his unique adjusment to his environment". Meaning:
that personality is a dynamic psichophysis organization rather than someone who causes it to
adapt to its environment.

b. May argues that "personality is an actualization of the life process in an individual who is
free, integrated in society and has an inner anxiety, which is related to religiosity.

c. Understanding personality according to Withington is "Personality is the overall behavior

of someone who is integrated, as seen in other people. This personality is not only inherent in
a person but more is the result of a long-standing cultural growth.

d. Personality is the dynamic of psychophysical systems in individuals who help determine

the ways that are unique (typical) in adjusting themselves to their environment.

From the description of the notion of personality above it can be concluded that
personality is a unique organization (typical) in each individual that is determined or
influenced by innate and environmental factors, so that it becomes a determinant or influence
of behavior. The development of a person's personality experiences a stage that starts from
the physical structure that grows and develops. Simultaneously, the level of intelligence or
psychic stupidity of an individual determines the adjustment in the talent ownership
environment will influence the tendency to behave.

The thing that can affect the process of personality development is the existence of
personality emotions that are associated with one's psychiatric. In addition, the existence of
the environment as forming behavior patterns, also the influence of the home and experience
at school. The personality is a behavior that means the moral nature of a person who can

6
reflect well an individual. It can be said that the individual's personality is rooted in his
physical and psychological abilities because biological factors interact with social or
environmental influences, then personality patterns occur with behavior that is regulated or
determined by the strength of certain characteristics.

The process is defined as a sequence of changes that occur in the development of

something. The purpose of the process in child development is the stages of change
experienced by a child both physically and spiritually.

B. The Types of Personality

Every person has their own personality type. Personality is a trait that is assessed from the
way people interact, ways of thinking, ways of acting, ways of reacting and so forth. Each
personality can be seen and has a different pattern. The difference in each of these traits can
be learned and allows people to have the same personality. Every personality has advantages
and disadvantages. The following will be discussed regarding the types of personality types.
Hipocrates revealed that there are 4 personalities that humans might have, including:

1. Koleris
Humans with a choleric personality have the ability to make good decisions. Koleris
people are able to organize themselves and have goals for the future well. They are
also productive people and like freedom in their lives. Koleris also hard to give up,
easily emotional, stubborn, strong-willed towards the desired achievement.

2. Melancholy
People with melancholy personality types have a perfectionist nature, care about their
surroundings, are very detailed, think analytically, and like to be noticed. A
melancholy is known to be very smart and fit to be an entrepreneur. They always
focus on the process rather than the goal.

3. Plegmatis
Plegmatis is a type of personality where someone who has a pacifist and neutral
nature in every situation. This type does not like to side with one camp. People with
this type can also be good listeners, have a good sense of humor, are easy to get along
with, have lots of friends, and don't like complicated things. This type is more likely
to be mediocre and less interested in new things.

4. Sanguinis
People with sanguinis personality have the nature of being easy to get along with
other people, likes to talk in public, likes to be noticed, and tends to dominate in
groups. But this type does not like to deal with complicated, serious, selfish, and easy
to forget. Lack of commitment to the common good.

7
C. The Learning Behavior

Personality is all forms of human habits that are gathered in him that are used to react and
adjust to all stimuli both coming from within him and from his environment, so that the style
and habits are a functional unity that is specific to that human being. From this
understanding, a person's personality is clearly very influential on his daily behavior.

Personality characteristics also affect adolescent behavior.

E.B. Hurlock (1986) suggests that a healthy adjustment or a healthy personality (healthy
personality) is characterized by the following characteristics.

a. Able to assess themselves in realities

b. Able to assess the situation realistically.

c. Able to assess the achievements obtained realistically.
