4 February is World Cancer Day
Cancer is the second leading cause of death after heart ailment in children.
Globally there are more than 300,000 children diagnosed with cancer each year.
Childhood cancer comprises almost 3-5 percent of the total cancer cases in India
Lets Understand what is “Cancer”

Slide 3 :Cell division

We all have learnt or you may learn in your class that our body is made of cells.
Cells help our body to grow. There are millions of cells in our body. Function of these cells is to divide into 2, 4 & 8 and
disappear.
These cells are so tiny that you can’t see them without using microscope. Each cells lives for ¾ months.

Slide 4 : Types of tumors

When the cells stop dividing it gets accumulated and forms into Tumor or Lumps.
There are two types of Tumors
A tumor is an abnormal lump or growth of cells. When the cells in the tumor are normal, it is benign. Something just
went wrong, and they overgrew and produced a lump. When the cells are abnormal and can grow uncontrollably, they
are cancerous cells, and the tumor is malignant.

Cancer develops when there are changes to the DNA (mutations) within a cell that allows it to grow out of control.
● Radiation Exposure - The most common form of radiation exposure is from the sun.
● Infections - Some viral infections directly affect the DNA to produce cancerous changes
● Family History - in 5% to 10% of cases, cancer is due to a family cancer syndrome that can be inherited

Symptoms of cancer can help each one of us to have the best chance for early detection and effective treatment.
Unexplained weight Loss - Losing 5% of your body weight over a six- to 12-month period without trying to loose
weight.

Slide 8 : Stages of Cancer

Stage 1 & 2 is curable depending on the body part in which the cancer is affected.
Stage 3 - 40% of survival is estimated.
Stage 4 – Doctors ask family members to pray and believe for miracle from GOD.

Treatment options for cancer depend on the specific type and stage of cancer and individual factors such as your
age, possible side effects, and other conditions you may have.
Chemotherapy – Oral Tablets or Intravenous injections which are passed through veins destroying he good cells and
cancerous cells. It is a painful procedure with side effects like hairloss, weakness in body, low immune.
Treatment cost is very expensive and can cost anywhere between 5-20 lakhs.
