Personal Safety on Ship

Basic safety is especially varied and means that sailors can adopt to stay safe on an
individual level, such as careful movement around the ship, steady handling of heavy cargo, etc.
In addition, appropriate use of safety equipment is also a part of personal safety on ships. Onboard
a ship can be fun but also equally dangerous. Sea accidents often occur and are prevented if proper
safety procedures are followed. To minimize risks and injuries while traveling on water, proper
precautions should be taken. In addition to the safety regulations mandated for each IMO ship and
the safety equipment carried out for personnel protection on each ship, there are several safety
measures that seafarers must take to ensure personal safety. In the ship.

It is necessary to wear comfortable and orderly clothes on a ship as loose clothing can catch
machinery and cause injuries. Proper footwear with slip-resistant soles helps minimize the dangers
of slipping and should be worn at all times on the ship. Apart from these, wear appropriate gloves
to protect the skin from exposure to heat, chemicals, sharp edges, etc. Personal protective
equipment includes safety helmets, shoes, goggles, ear-muffs, safety gear, life jackets, life rafting,
etc., which are used to protect the individual seafarer from any damage. This equipment is
mandatory for ships to ensure there are no fatalities due to lack of life-saving equipment. The crew
must be aware of where the equipment is maintained and trained to know how to use all the
equipment. Dust masks are an additional, essential requirement while working in a toxic
environment or during ship delivery. All this equipment needs to be inspected at regular intervals
to ensure it is working properly and should be replaced otherwise.

In addition to personal life-saving devices used on board ships, there are safety equipment
for the entire crew, including lifeboats, fire extinguishers, fire adjustments and breathing devices,
emergency medical equipment, and distress signals for assistance calling. Operating crew should
be well versed in the use of communication equipment with appropriate awareness of all necessary
protocols. In addition, the communication equipment should be checked regularly to make sure it
works without interruption.
