THEATRE & COMMUNICATION

 Greek Theatre Ancient Greek theatre begins 2500 years ago .


 The word theatre is derived from Ancient Greek théatron, "a place for
viewing"),
 Athens is the City that is most associated with Greek Theatre.
 Theaterical culture in Greek flourished duting 700 B.C
 Dionysus is the name of Greek god at whose festival plays were
presented .
 Three dramatic genre : tragedy( Thalia), comedy ( Melpomene) and
satire.
 Thespis was the first actor and often called father of Greek tragedian.
 Chorus is a non-individualised group of performers, who comment with
a collective voice on the dramatic action.
 Romans were inspired by Greek theatre.
Horace was best known playwright in the Roman.
 Elizabethan theatre—refers to the theatre of England between 1562
and 1642.
 Most important playwright of the period was William Shakespeare,
Christopher Marlow and Ben Johnson.
 Three dramatic genre : Tragedy, Comedy and Historical plays.
 Henrik Ibsen is famously known as the Father of Modern Drama.
 Father of Amercain Drama William Dinlap.
 Okuni a woman who started Kabuki theatre of Japan.
 Parsi theatre flourished in 1850-1930 and started in 1853.
 First Parsi theatre company Parsi Natak Mandali
 First play by parsi Roostum Zabooli and Shoraab .

INDIAN THEATRE are divided into three catagories:


1. Classical ( Sanskrit)
2. Traditional ( Folk)
3. Modern theatre.
 Theaterical culture in Sankrit flourished during 1500B.C – 1100 A.D
 Bharata Muni is considered the father of Indian theatrical art in
Classical theatre who wrote Natyashastra.

 Forms of traditional theatre in India:
Bhand Pather (Kashmir), Swang (Haryana) Natunki( UP) ,Bhavna
(Gujrat) , Maach (M.P), Tamasha (Maharastra), Dashavatar ( Goa),
Yakshagana (Karnataka), Bhoavna (Assam).
 (Indian People of Theatre association) IPTA was founded in 1942.
 The Delhi-based theatre company Jana Natya Manch, 1973 best known
for its street theatre.
 Golden Jublie of IPTA celebrated in 1994.
 Kathputli is a string puppet theatre, native to Rajasthan

 Sangeet Natak Academy founded in India 1952 .
 National School of drama Delhi is an autonomous body under Minstry Of
Culture Govt Of India set up by Sangeet natak Mandali in 1959.
 Tony Awards are considered the highest theatre award of US.
 Street theatre is a form of theatrical performance and
presentation in outdoor public spaces without a specific paying
audience.
 Comedy is an overaching genre of theatre that is meant to
entertain audience with humour and usually happy ending.
 Tragedy is a theme that is serious indepth where the hero dies.
 Catastrohy tragedy ending
 Denoument Comic ending as well as tragic in a plot or
storyline.
 Theme is the main idea of play or a statement of life which
playwright build the play around.
 Protoginst is the main character in the play.
 Antognist is a someone opposite to protognist.
 Plot is an action and main events in the play.
 Elements of the plot is exposition, rising action , climax ,falling
action and Denoument.
 Climax is when conflict reachs peak or turning point of the
plot.It usually indicates the moment of higest emotion and
suspense.
 Improvisation is a style of theatre using unrehearsed and
unscripted action.
 Pathos is an element that evokes sorrow and compassion in a
plot or narrative.
 Soliloquy is a lonely speech spoken to the audience.
 Mime is the oldest form of theatre.
 Puppet is a form of theatre or performance that involves the
manipulation by adding animated stuffs.
 Opera An opera house is a theatre building used for opera
performances that consists of a stage, an orchestra pit,
audience seating, and backstage facilities for costumes and set
building.
 Character is a person who portrayed in a play.
 Broadway is an American street play.
 Monologue is an extended speech by one character.

Folk Theatre Of Kashmir.


Bhand Pather is a traditional folk theatre which is performed in
theatres of Kashmir, usually performed in social and cultural
functions. It makes a powerful combination of satirical and realistic
drama, portraying social traditions and evils.The most contemporary
legendry folk theatre personality – both as performer-cum-director and
playwright was Late Mohammad Subhan Bhagat (1927-93) from Akingam-
Anantnag. The most popular plays happened to be “Grees-Pather”
(Pathers about Farmers), Watal-Pathers (Pather about cobblers), Darzi-
Pather (Pather – portraying the tyranny of the Dards), Bakerwal-Pather
(Pather about Bakerwals – a nomad tribe of Kashmir etc.
 This golden age of drama in Kashmir lasted 1500 years. It
started from the beginning of the Christian era to the fifteenth
century.
 Moti Lal Kemmu: Soul of Kashmiri Folk Theatre
 In 1974, eighteen repertories working in the valley set up an
association called the Kashmir Theatre.
 Federation under the able guidance of Ali Mohammad Lone,
Pran Kishore, Som Nath Zutshi, Bansi Mattoo, M. L. Kharoo,
Moti Lal Kemmu and Makhanlal Saraf.
The actor-directors Shabir Mujahid and Bashir Ahmad Qadri, and
Nazir Josh, versatile comedian of the National Theatre (Badgam)
and author of popular comic plays like Timi goryi gayi ("Gone Are
the Days"), Mwal ("Vagabonds"), and Hazar dastan ("Thousand
Tales").

 Funtoosh is a brainchild of four youngsters - Sibath Qureshi


Rayes Mohi ud din, Abrar Ali , Shehla Arif [all film making and
mass communication professionals]. It started in 2012.

 The JK Art academy was set up in 1958.
