OF TRANSPORT AND
DEVELOPMENT
Background
We are pleased to introduce All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), an apex body of Transporters -
All India Motor Transport Congress
(both Cargo and Passenger) serving the industry from last 76 years, representing approx. 75 lacs Truckers
and approx. 40 lacs Bus & Tourist Operators. It is an umbrella body of covering over 2500 Taluka, Distt.,
State level Federations & Transport Associations. This is a totally non-political, non-religious and non-
profitable organization committed to work for the development of road transport and for the welfare of the
people associated with this industry. We may mention here that the Transport Industry provides direct
employment up to 1.2 crore indirect up to 10 crore skilled, semi skilled and unskilled population in the every
nook and corner of the country.
Since 1936, when AIMTC was set up in Lahore, it has been serving the cause of development of the transport
industry. Originally set-up as the Association India Motor Union Congress (AIMUC) to avert the deteriorating
situation of Transport Industry in the country at that time, the President of India National Congress was its
President with a working president elected to manage the affairs of the body. In 1968, we changed our
name to All India Motor Transport Congress to have a separate identity as a non-political organization.
Its present operations are carried out from the national capital, Delhi. AIMTC maintains a continuing liaison
with the government, both at the center and states, canvassing for development of road network and other
infrastructure facilities. We acquire and disseminate knowledge about various aspects of the transport
industry to our members and generally among the owners and users of the transport industry to enhance the
standard of transport services.
Since 1947, AIMTC has had the privilege to be associated with a majority of important committees and
commissions appointed by the government of India including the Transport Development Council.
Functioning
Invariably, a majority of the local associations and unions of bus and truck operators, in addition to leading companies of
transporters and vehicle fleet operators are members of All India Motor Transport Congress. For effective functioning of the
body, the country has been divided into four-zones, North, South, East and West and each zone is allocated a given numbers
of seats in the central executive body on the basis of a pre-determined formula. Through a democratic process of secret
ballots, the members of the AIMTC spread all over the country elect the members of the National Executive from their
respective zones. Members of the Executive, in turn, elect a President from one zone and Vice-Presidents from the remaining
three zones. The election of these office-bearers rotates every two years, clockwise. The executive committee meets
frequently in different parts of the country in order to gain personal interaction with local members and other trade unions.
The National Executive of AIMTC is its chief decision-making body.
In order to draw upon the experience of its members, individual units have been set up, namely,
(a) Truckers Cell under the Chairmanship of a truck operator
(b) Transporters Cell, under the chairmanship of a representative of transport companies.
(c) Passenger Services Cell under the chairmanship of a bus operator.
(d) Banking and Insurance committee, and
(e) Programme committee.
