PROBLEM 10.

16
Calculate the heat transfer coefficient for film boiling of water on a 1.3 cm horizontal
tube if the tube temperature is 550°C and the system is placed under pressure of 1/2 atm.
GIVEN
• Film boiling of water on a horizontal tube
• Tube outside diameter (D) = 1.3 cm = 0.013 m
• Tube temperature (Tt) = 550°C
• Pressure = 1/2 atm = 50,660 N/m2
FIND
• The heat transfer coefficient (hc)
ASSUMPTIONS
• Steady state
• Tube temperature is uniform and constant
• The viscosity, specific heat, and thermal conductivity of the vapor can be approximated by those
of steam at 1 atm pressure
• Radiation across the vapor film is negligible
SKETCH

Water P = 1/2 atm Tt = 550 °C

D = 1.3 cm

PROPERTIES AND CONSTANTS

From Appendix 2, Table 13, for water at 50,660 N/m2
Saturation temperature (Tsat): 81.5°C
Water density, (ρl): 970.6 kg/m3
Heat of vaporization, (hfg): 2304 kJ/kg = 2.304 × 106 J/kg
Vapor density, (ρv = 1/vg): 0.3070 kg/m3
Extrapolating from Appendix 2, Table 34, for steam at 1 atm and 81.5°C
Absolute viscosity (μv) = 10.49 × 10–6 (Ns)/m2
Thermal conductivity (kv) = 0.0257 W/(m K)
Specific heat (cv) = 1965 J/(kg K)
SOLUTION
The heat transfer coefficient for film boiling on tubes is given by Equation (10.6)
1
 g ( ρl − ρv ) ρv kv3 [ h fg + 0.68 c pv ΔTx ]  4
hc = 0.62  
 D μ v ΔTx 
 ( 9.8 m/s 2 ) (970.6 − 0.3070) kg/m3 ( 0.3070 kg/m3 ) ( 0.0257 W/(m K)) 3
hc = 0.62 
 (0.013m) (10.49 × 10 (N s)/m )( (kg m)/(s N) ) (550°C − 81.5°C)
