R-J3 CONTROLLER INSTALLATION

Installing the R-J3 A-B RIO Interface on the R-J3 controller involves three
major steps:

• 1. Setting the R-J3 A-B RIO Interface DIP switches.

Because you cannot access the DIP switches when the board is installed in the controller, you
must set them before you install the board in the controller. You can use system variables to see
the DIP switch positions when the board is installed.

• 2. Plugging the R-J3 A-B RIO Interface into the R-J3 controller.
• 3. Wiring the serial communication line to the R-J3 A-B RIO Interface.

2.4.1
Setting DIP Switches

Before you plug in the R-J3 A-B RIO Interface, you must set the Dual In-line Package (DIP)
switches on the interface board. These switch settings must not be modified while the controller is
turned on. The DIP switches are accessible only when the PCB is removed from the controller.

The way you set the DIP switches depends on how you want your system to function. There are
two banks of DIP switches: Switch 1 and Switch 0. The switch positions are oriented as shown in
Figure 2-2 , with Switch 0 to the left of Switch 1 as you look at the PCB with the 6-position
terminal block to the left.

As it is difficult to determine the DIP Switch positions when the R-J3 mini-slot PCB is installed, the
settings for the switch positions have been stored in two system variables for easy access:

• • The DIP switches in SW0 are decimal encoded and stored in the system variable
$AB_INT_CFG.$DIP_SW_0.
• • The DIP switches in SW1 are decimal encoded and stored in the system variable
$AB_INT_CFG.$DIP_SW_1.

Refer to Appendix C for more detailed information on these system variables.

The eight switches in Switch 1 are described in Table 2-2 , Table 2-3 , and Table 2-4 . The eight
switches in Switch 0 are described in Table 2-5 , Table 2-6 , Table 2-7 , and Table 2-8 . Keep in
mind when you read the descriptions of these switch settings that the PLC sees the R-J3 A-B RIO
Interface as another remote I/O rack. (See Chapter 1.)

Consult the appropriate Allen-Bradley documentation for information on the proper DIP switch
settings for your particular PLC and I/O
scanner.

reported by the R-J3 A-B RIO
Interface.
The PLC sees the R-J3 A-B RIO

CLOSED
PLC is broken, the inputs from the
(On)
PLC are zeroed out.
When serial communication with the
PLC is reestablished after being
OPEN
broken, the R-J3 A-B RIO Interface

will automatically begin
communicating with the PLC.
Restart When serial communication with the

communicating. Power to the robot
controller will need to be cycled to
reestablish communication.
