LO3 - Evaluation

Weekly blog updates are required, as with every unit. Please remember to
take photos/screenshots as you film/edit. You might find it easier if you note down a record
of what you did each day in a diary form.

Please use the following guidance to help you with each week.

THESE MUST BE COMPLETED IN DETAIL. INCLUDE IMAGES AND BE SPECIFIC!

Week 1 This week was spent on idea generation

What have you been asked to This week we have been asked to decide which 2 out
do? of the 3 types of productions to make; Short film, stop
motion animation or music video. We decided to
make a short film and a music video as we have
never worked on a stop motion animation and our
skills are in short films and music videos. Then we had
to come up with 6 ideas in total, 3 ideas for a short film
and 3 ideas for a music video, then we sent out a
survey to find out what our target audience would
prefer out of those music video ideas. We then
reviewed and analysed the feedback from the
survey. This also meant that we could type up our final
ideas as we were asked to type up a beginning.
Middle and end to 2 ideas, 1 idea from the music
videos and 1 idea from the short films. After the survey
results, we were able to choose which narrative for
both the music video and short film we are going to
use. After we typed up the two ideas in detail, we
were asked to type up a proposal consisting of a
rationale, project concept and evaluation. For each
we outline our skills, aims and how were going to
evaluate everything.
Why have you chosen this target We were given two options for target audience, 5-12-
audience? year olds or 25-40-year olds. We decided to choose
the age range of 25-40-year olds as we are more
interested in content that is aimed at them compared
to content aimed at 5-12-year olds. We also did this
because content for 25-40 year olds will challenge our
abilities and improve our potential as the narratives
will have to be more complex to suit the older age
range whereas if we were aiming our working at 5-12
year olds then the narratives would be far more basic
which would limit our ability to improve our work to
the standard we want it to be at. We also have more
experience with more mature content and narratives
as our previous college work has prepared us better
for this age group meaning we can work better to
achieve and produce better projects.
What two productions have you We have chosen to make a short film and a music
decided to make? How do they video as these will work to advance our skills, as we
allow you to improve your skills? have no experience or interest in stop motion
animation it wouldn’t make sense to pursue it as we
would like to develop our skills with more film based
projects. A short film is something both Lucca and I
have a lot of experience with and working on one on
a bigger scale will develop our skills with detailed
research both primary and secondary as well as our
practical skills as a larger scale project requires us to
extend our skills and aim higher than in previous
projects to meet the requirements for a good grade.
A music video will especially help us with scene timing
and editing with a song to sync to the footage, this
will mean we will have to be especially aware of the
length of scenes and exactly how much useable
footage we have. The short film will improve our skills
as we have more precise guidelines to follow
compared to previous projects, like not having any
dialogue, this means we will have to create an
immersive and believable production without words
from any character making it challenging but will also
put a different perspective on our work.
How did the survey help you to The survey we sent out helped us select our idea as
select your idea? we asked what people from our target audience age
range would want to see out of the narratives we
came up with, we also asked how the idea they
chose could be improved, this gave us valuable
information on what idea appeals best to our chosen
age range, it narrowed down what is popular with our
target audience and gave us a better idea of what
kind of content 25-40 year old’s want to see. It also
allowed for feedback on the ideas so that we can
get a better idea of what our target audiences
prefers.
Are you on track for the week? This week I am fully on track with all my work so far. I
only need to finish this which is now done.
What work needs to be This weekly blog was the only piece of work that
completed for you to catch up? needed to be completed and now has been fully
completed.

Week 2 This week was spent researching target audiences

What did you find out about In our secondary research we investigated various
your target audience through areas of information about our target audience of 25-
your secondary research? 40-year olds to get the best understand of what they
like and what they want to see in our production.
Firstly, we looked at our target audiences’
demographics, researching their gender, income,
occupations, education, ethnicity and sexuality. Now
starting with gender we know that in the 25-40 year old
age range there is simply male or female, there may be
some people who say they are “Non-Binary” and so on,
but that is a very small percentage of them and we
tend to see people claiming to be other genders in
younger generation. When looking at income, we
found out that the average income of Millennial’s is
about £25,000 a year in the UK. In terms of Occupation
we found that most of the popular occupations that
Millennial’s went into were jobs that require a form of
university degree or further education certificate which
leads to my next point; Millennial’s turn out to be the
most academically educated generation meaning
they have the best qualifications in average. Looking at
ethnicity, we found that Millennial’s saw the first
significant diversification in terms of different ethnicities.
Sexuality for our target audience is predominantly
heterosexual men and women however Millennial’s are
the first generation to see a significant increase in
people being apart of the LGBTQ+ community so there
is more diversity in that region.
We also researched Psychographics, looking at;
activities, interests, opinions, attitudes, values and
behaviour. In terms of activities, Millennial’s tend to be
more active than other generations, they spend more
time at the gym, doing sporting activities and working
on at their jobs, they also socialise more often than
other generations, especially compared to younger
generations. When looking at interests, Millennial’s tend
to like team sports and being active outdoors, they also
prefer to socialise in person rather than online and also
are not as interested in fictional or unrealistic
programmes, e.g. superhero’s, magical kingdom’s.
When looking at opinions we found that Millennial’s
have stronger political opinions compared to other
generations as it affects them the most, they are also
more liberal than other generations as well. Millennial’s
also think that on average half of businesses have a
positive effect on society. Their attitudes are more
orientated to sports and have a more active attitude to
work and free time, they also like to be surer of
themselves as people and they don’t like to doubt their
own knowledge often. Millennial’s value money as their
living costs and financial situations are on average
tougher than other age ranges and they also value
family and friends more. In terms of their behaviours,
they usually don’t spend much money on themselves
unless it is living costs or general food. They shop at
cheaper supermarkets and clothing stores and rarely
every buy designer clothes or then newest technology
at full retail price. They also go out less to drink and
don’t party much at all during social hours.
Based on our video analysis of other short films and
music videos we found that serious and mature content
is the way to go when appealing to our target
audience as serious subjects tend to be the ones that
relate or make sense to the Millennial generation as
they are old enough to understand these things and
they may not have experienced them directly however
they have an understanding of these mature subjects.
How will this help you in From our research we now know that we have to make
adapting your idea to meet the sure our production fully and ultimately shows that the
chosen audience? two main characters are father and son as this will be
the key to making the twist significant and we know
from our research that a significant believable twist will
be what interests and appeals to our audiences the
most. They are also the most educated generation, this
means that they can understand and follow complex
idea’s so for our production we will be hinting
information about the stalker from the small
appearances he makes until the end when he is
revealed as the stalker, the twist should not confuse the
viewers if done properly so this should be very possible
and would improve our production by sticking with a
more complex idea compared to the stalker literally
only being a stalker. I think it could be interesting to not
make anything definite until the conclusion at the end,
as we know from our research, Millennial’s do not like to
doubt their own knowledge so having a production
that causes them to second guess could really pull their
attention as it stops the production from being
predictable, because of this instead of having hints that
he is the father all the time, we will have him appear as
an ominous character with bad intentions up until the
end of the production.
How useful was interviewing This was the most effective way to get answers for our
people from your chosen target production but also one of the hardest to achieve,
audience? fortunately we managed to get 6 people to do an
interview/focus group which meant we received lots of
good feedback however it was very challenging. In
interviews we were able to explain questions and ideas
fully and we could ask the interviewees to elaborate on
their answers. Some interviewees gave better more
detailed answers than others however all answers gave
us a better understanding of what they like, dislike,
what to use and not to use in our production providing
us with a better more improved vision and idea for
what our production should ultimately end up like.
Overall it was a useful piece of research to do and
gave us a better understanding of what our target
audience of 25-40 year olds would like to see in a short
film and music video.
Was it difficult to get a large This was surprisingly incredibly difficult, we shared the
response to your survey? How surveys on a Marlow Facebook group that consists of a
could you improve the amount few thousand, we also got parents to share it on their
Facebook, on top of this I posted a link to both surveys
of respondents for your FMP?
on my second Instagram page which has 10.3
thousand followers and hundreds of people saw the
post and we asked people we knew in our target
audience to do it and we only ended up with 6 people
responding to both surveys. In the screenshots below I
there is evidence of me sharing the surveys and trying
to get survey results, so although the target was at least
30 per survey, we only managed to get 6, I think the
fundamental problem is that people will not spend up
to 30 minutes doing surveys (which is roughly how long
it would take to watch some of the examples and
answer the questions) giving detailed answers for free. I
do not have enough disposable income to spend on
paying people to answer a survey, to improve the
responses for my FMP I will try the same methods in
case it does work next time however I will also need to
contact more Facebook groups and potentially go out
and ask people with fliers that have the links on them,
or I will reach out to as much family as I can to share
and answer the survey, these will be the most
achievable methods within my reach.
What have you found to be the My research both and primary and secondary has
key things that you should be taught me that my target audience wants to watch
targeting your audience with? something serious, that hits hard and have more
complex deeper meanings, a simple chase will not cut
What makes this audience
it for them, although it is a short film they want some
different to the one you never layers to the production, something that feels like it
chose? could be real but still not what you would every see in
everyday life. Our target audience expects content
that won’t be as it appears, to avoid predictability.
They also are not as in interested in themes of drugs,
violence or crime unless it is based on looking into those
themes rather than making a production narrative with
those themes strongly prominent in then. Narrative is
very important for our target audience; lack of
narrative will likely lose their attention as action without
narrative is dull for our target audience and meaning is
what makes the impact with them. Compared to the
target audience we did not choose which is 5-12 year
olds, our target audience is far more intelligent, mature
and complex, our target audience can understand far
more than the other age range, they also have far
more knowledge meaning they can understand and
appreciate more complex storyline narratives as well as
story arcs. Our target audience also likes to watch
completely different productions compared to the 5-12
age range as they are far more mature, the type of
content aimed at the different age groups is very
different and the complexity of the storylines would
have to be far more simple for the 5-12 age range, the
younger age range also tend to like animated or
cartoon programmes whereas far less Millennial’s will
watch animated or cartoon programmes which gives
an idea of how live action programmes use content
compared to animated or cartoon programmes.
Are you on track for the week? I am mostly on track I only need to type up the analysis
of research results which I am still waiting on as I am
waiting on the edit of the interviews from Lucca and
the survey results as few people have answered and
then I need to do this weekly blog.
What work needs to be I need to collect any survey results I have and analyse
completed in your own time? them, and I also need to get the finished edit of the
interviews analysed as well. Then I just need to finish this
weekly blog.

Week 3 This week was spent researching codes and

conventions
What genres have you chosen Short film:
and why? Short film:
For our short film, we decided to go with the genre of
Alternative rock as the song we want to use is “Can’t
Stop” by the RedHot Chilli Peppers. We have chosen
this genre because when doing research into what
our target audience likes and why it is popular with
the age group we are targeting, We found that the
song can't stop is very popular with our target
audience as a whole and From our surveys can't stop
was a popular option when respondents voted. The
genre of the song itself was heavily influenced by the
song choice, rather than looking at what genres our
audiences like we instead looked at Songs that were
popular and still are with our target audience. The
reason we went with our chosen genre for the music
video is because we wanted to go with the idea of
nostalgia/memories As we found that when looking at
codes and conventions most music videos that use
this theme do not appeal to our target audience I
believe this is because millennials do not typically
watch as many music videos for current music and
the music videos from the songs they listened to do
not tap into the nostalgic idea. Therefore the genre
we chose was heavily influenced by this song we
went with but the theme of nostalgia is purely our own
choice as it is a good way of appealing to a
generation that is getting older but not too old do you
feel like they are limited or trapped by age.

Short film:
For our short film, we decided to choose the genre of
thriller we found that the thriller genre suits the
millennial audience because thrillers tend to involve
characters close to the age and explore ideas that
millennials not only think about but could potentially
face. this is a strong reason as to why we chose this
genre as it engages millennials very strongly because
It bases the narrative on things that could happen to
them that are very unlikely too, which makes the
narrative more believable and immersive and
therefore more enjoyable. I also found that when
looking at the codes and conventions of that are the
genre that they revolve around sure serious subjects
that only people of a certain age can understand
fully and enjoy. This means that they are at an age
when the concept and conventions in the thriller TV
shows and films can be fully appreciated by them
because if they were younger it would make as much
sense and the meanings behind the productions
would be far less significant.
What have you learnt from your Firstly, I researched skills and how they can affect a
secondary research this week? production as well as how I can implement them
myself.
I started by looking at Camera angles and specifically
how they can influence a scene. For example, in the
silence of the lambs there is a scene that I analysed,
in this scene the Camera position, Camera movement
and Camera angle All played a significant part in
who essentially wins the scene (comes out best in the
conversation). Having an actor looked directly at the
camera with the Camera positioned square and
directly at them can make some look more
intimidating the door so make them appear to be on
a similar level to the opposing character this is
because we are seeing the scene as viewers through
the characters points of view. Seeing a POV shot of
each actor looking directly at each other places
them on level ground simply because the Camera is
level However this can be changed simply by having
1 character sit down and the other stay standing up
the use of levels and Camera angle now looking
down at one character and up at the other create
Hey more visually powerful look for the character
standing up and vice versa with the character sitting
down who looks smaller and more vulnerable just by
having the Camera look down on them.
In another skills analysis, I looked into the mise en
scene of the film American Beauty and a couple of
scenes that affectively use props positioning and
essentially everything in the scene to give a certain
message to the viewers. I learned that simply
something like a dead plant in the same source as a
character can connote that the character is feeling
sad or depressed for example. Another way of doing
this is by having clear space between the character
and the props in the scene this makes the character
look vulnerable and alone. This can also be done
through the Camera angle, in the 1st scene I
analysed for American beauty that is a lot of negative
headspace above the character yet his feet are cut
out of frame, visually this does not look aesthetically
pleasing to the viewers, subconsciously giving them
the impression that the character is in a bad position
either in the narrative or in some other inner or outer
conflict they may have. however, I did also learn that
this can be flipped to make a character look powerful
and to give them a specific undertone. In the analysis
I wrote a character called Brad who in the narrative
has a position of high power in the company that
both characters work at the Camera is angled up at
him he is surrounded by luxury props of the time
period and everything in the scene has straight edges
an solid colours connoting structure, power and
confidence.
The 3rd and final analysis I wrote was in the movie
“Film club”. In this, I looked into sound and learned
how good sounds should unnoticed. The smoother
and more unnoticeable the sound is the better the
quality. If the viewers can determine diegetic and
non-diegetic sound being implemented, then the
sound engineers have not done a good job. Sound
engineers do not typically use what you would expect
to create foley sounds, they instead use certain
objects and items to Make a specific sound effect
such as celery crunching to simulate the sound of
somebody being punched or bacon sizzling to sound
like rainfall. A lot of Foley sounds do not come from
the direct object or action that you would expect to
come from, for example when recording Leaves
crunching under footsteps they do not typically
actually crunch dried leaves and may you something
that creates a more impactful and prominent crunch
sound to do this like nuts for example.
I also researched too short films and 2 music videos
that follow the same genres that I have chosen.
How will this influence what you Music video:
include in your productions? From music video, Camera angles will play a big part
in the production. As our production will be strongly
about the pure joy that the protagonist gets from the
activities he does route the narrative, we will be using
Camera angles affectively 2 give a certain effect to
the different shots so high angle is looking down will
not to be something we would include as they will
make the character looks smaller and less significant.
Having low angles looking up will make the character
look confident, more significant and more important
in the narrative. I want to make the protagonist look
not only like they are the most important and
significant part of the scene but also that they are
essentially winning in the narrative. So, in our
production, We will use close-ups to not only show the
significance of the character and the emotion he is
feeling but also to centre him in the narrative so that
all of the attention is on him. Another way that's my
research will influence my music video is that the
attention to details in the shots will the important as
they will give smaller details and create more
meaning through the connotations that they give off
to the audience. For our music video the props will be
instrumentally important From my research I now know
just how effective props and positioning is for a shot,
and because of this I want to implement good use of
proxemics and props in the music video, So for each
scene I Use spacing and props too give underlying
messages in each scene so for example when the
character is in a position of boredom and sadness I
will have a lot of space around him so That's views get
the impression that there is nothing near him and
therefore this reflects in his life however when the
protagonist is in a better mood I will have closer props
and less negative space so viewers know that he is in
a better position.
my research into sound design will influence my music
video as the audio will play a big part of the
experience for the viewers have Bing strong sound
effects will be very important as most of the audio will
be the song itself so choosing the moments where
they will be other pieces of audio is very significant to
the production from my research I know that good
sound design should actually go unnoticed so I
believe that for my music video having no audio other
than the song itself would actually be more effective
than adding sound effects as they could clash with
the song audio itself breaking the emotion of the
music video.

Short film:
One strong influence for the short film I will be creating
is the use of Camera angles between 2 characters.
We plan to implement a scene in which a father and
son meet however the sun is unaware that's the man
is his father and will be intimidated by him because
the sun will think that the father is a stranger. using
certain Camera angles will be a strong way of giving
a certain tone to the scene. As the father character
will need to be intimidating we will use close-ups of
him without revealing his face until the son finds out
that the man is father this will keep the mystery as to
who the character is and also create say more tense
scene as both the viewers and the sun will not know
who the father is.
The mise en scene Will be very important for our short
film, as this is a thriller Threat full scenes will be more
effective if there is a large amount of negative space
around character in danger , this will connote that
there is nowhere for the character to run or hide but
this can also be effective when the character is in a
safe location, where we can have him close to
surrounding props and other characters connecting
that he is in a safe area with people that he trusts an
example of this is if we have a scene in a classroom
with his peers.
The research I did into the sound design will affect my
short film as the short film thriller and relies on a level of
dramatic effect to be more immersive and engaging.
so for my short film, I will implement sound effects and
background music that will make the production as
real and as believable as possible as this goes with the
codes and conventions of the genre. However if the
audio recorded on set is better than implemented
sound effects then it may be more effective to keep
some of the sound from the footage but if the unset
audio does not create the desired effect the short film
then I will implement the sound effects that create a
better impact and suits the scene or action better.
What are the key conventions for Short film: Thriller
your chosen genres? What MUST The first key convention of a thriller production is that
you include for it to be that its verges on realism and causes the viewers to
believe that the events in the production could
genre?
happen. Realistic narratives work better in this genre
as realism makes it easier for viewers to relate or
understand the narrative. Also, lighting is a very key
convention of the thriller genre. We tend to see more
limited lighting in thriller productions by this I mean
that thrillers tend to have darker scenes with lower
amounts of light, this is because lower light levels
mean that viewers can see less in the scene and the
darkness connotes evil and a general feeling of
discomfort. Sound on Top of this plays a big part in
showing the key conventions, shop and impactful
sound effects (typically non-diegetic) are more
effective at signifying with an action or line of
dialogue in production is more important or has a
more significant impact on the protagonist all
characters in the scene. An example of this is a deep
thud when a dramatic line of dialogue is given, and
the filmmakers want to highlight this line of dialogue to
the viewers. When looking at Camerawork close-ups
are convention when it comes to thrillers this is
because it gives viewers a limited perspective of the
scene and makes them more susceptible to the
thrilling feeling that the genre aims to give off.
For our short film we must include close up shots as our
narrative is heavily based on the idea of being stalked
so close-ups will allow us to show the stalker without
revealing too much about what they look like, we can
also use close up to show the emotion of fear and
distress on the protagonists face. We also must
include dark lighting for our short film, the reason for
this is because it will connote the bad undertones
that's we want to give off and will tell viewers that the
underlying message of the film is creepy and
unsettling as stalking makes people uncomfortable.

Music video: Alternative rock

For this Genre the key conventions are not as clearly
defined Generally in this genre a high level of energy
is typically seen in the music videos and the lighting
tends to depend on the lyrics and the message it is
trying to convey so for our music video brighter
lighting will be more effective as we are trying to
promote a more positive style and message.
Alternative rock tends to be expressive, so the
conventions do depend on the lyrics. In terms of
sound, this genre is overall loud. Most audio is only the
song with some small amounts of sound effects for
specific important pieces of footage or the intro or
outro of the music video itself. the editing style is
usually fast-paced and quickly cuts between each
shot to go with the pace of the music video itself.
For my music video I think that to keep to the
conventions of the genre I will not use sound effects
throughout the narrative unless the song be the on
the audio however in the intro it will be effective to
use sound effects for the build-up to create an
immersive introduction to the music video to then
allow it to go into the song.
Are you on track for the week? I am on track with everything other than my in-depth
video analysis of both the short films and music videos.
What work needs to be I need to complete my in-depth analysis of the codes
completed in your own time? and conventions of the two music videos and two
short films to keep on track and I will do these in my
own time to make sure I stay up to date.

Week 4 This week was spent researching codes and

conventions
What have you learnt from your This week I have learned how to effectively make a
research this week? production without dialogue, this is because for my
short film I am not allowed to use any dialogue, so it is
important that I can make an engaging piece of work
without the characters needing to say anything. I
learned that to do this it is important to limit the
number of characters in the production, it is also
important to limit locations as the more actors and
locations you have more likely viewers are going to
expect the actors to talk to Give Context to the
scene.
I also learned about colour tone. The colouring of a
shot or production as a whole can significantly affect
the way that viewers watch it. For example, less
contrast and saturation can result in more dull shots,
therefore, connoting bored and disinterest whereas
bright colours from saturation can connote positivity
and joy.
Not only did I learn about the above, but I also looked
at how a production can tell audiences about where
the scene is located, the season, and traits about the
character without any dialogue. themed background
music is a great way of telling audiences what season
it is as well as location. Also, sound effects can tell
audiences certain things about a character, for
example, The sound from the way that a character
walks can connote their current state, age, situation. I
know that person would walk slower, a Moody child
may kick their feet at the ground. So sound effects
although simple can affect the way do you watch
productions even if the footage is not showing where
the sound effect is coming from.
I researched into reverse storytelling. The movie
Momento does this very effectively. The movie uses a
Reverse order in which to tell the story this means that
when viewers watch a scene, they have many
questions than in the following seen those questions
are answered but replaced with new questions in
simple terms. This can be an effective way of
engaging an audience and creating questions that
cause the view was to continue watching so that they
may find out the answer.
I also went over Todorov’s theory of storytelling Where
there is a new equilibrium, a disruption to the
equilibrium, a recognition of the disruption, an
attempt to repair the damage and then finally the
new equilibrium. Each stage is represented commonly
among many narratives however I learned that they
can be shifted around 2 create a non-conventional
storyline like movies such as Momento.
I also researched the use of music in productions.
Music can be used to give a specific tone to the
scene, but the lack of music can also do this as well.
The majority of productions tend to use atmospheric
music as it a very effective way of telling audiences
that's the scene has a certain context or theme
without directly having to show it or have it said in a
line of dialogue stop music also greatly supports
footage as it users audio to back up footage so while
the viewer is watching a scene play out their ears are
listening to the music which greatly supports the
footage as it takes up another sense other than sight
when viewers are engaged.
I also researched ideal locations to work out where I
would prefer to shoot and record my productions in
an ideal world following this, I then looked at similar
locations that I can get access to. This taught me
what I expect from the locations I want to use and
how I can use accessible locations to try to achieve a
similar setting.
the final piece of research I did was into white
balance, this primary research taught me how can
use white balance too put a certain effect visually
footage but also How I can edit the colouring to go
even further into detail and create the desired effect.
What developments do you need Music video:
to make to your production for it For my music video, I will have to make sure that I use
to meet these codes and the appropriate colour tone and white balance. This is
because I want to connote a feeling of happiness joy
conventions requirements?
and freedom and a colourful saturated image should
achieve this.
I will also need to distinguish the difference in feeling
between when the protagonist is old and tired and
when he is young and energetic. To do this I will
match the scenes with the pace of the song so that
when he is old music is slower however when he is
young the music has a faster pace and more
energetic style.
I will also need to use relevant locations to each
activity so that there is a clear context to each scene
and so that viewers do not struggle to understand the
actions and message behind each scene.

Short film:
A key part of my short film is not having dialogue,
though the advice for a no dialogue short film is to
limit the locations and characters, I believe that
scenes with a lot of physical activity will not be as
likely to prompt the need for dialogue therefore to
meet this convention I will ensure that the scenes
require physical activity to give context without
dialogue, for example, a part-time job where instead
of serving customers the character is cleaning up
instead .
As my short film is a thriller colour tone will be very
important the narrative is very serious and less
saturated shots will achieve a more dramatic image
which will help make my short film meet the codes
and conventions for this genre.
I will also need to make sure I use clear character
types so that's the protagonist is the “Hero” of the
production and the stalker Appears to be the “Villain”
of the production until the end when we realise that
he is the protagonist's father.
Are you on track for the week? I am all on track apart from the location research into
the locations I would ideally use and then the
locations I can use.
What work needs to be The work I need to complete in my own is the location
completed in your own time? research into locations I would ideally use and
locations I can use, once this work is complete, I will
be on track for this week.
Week 5 This week was spent planning your productions

What did you learn from your One thing I learned from my planning Is that
planning? storyboards take a very long time compared to the
documents. To create a detailed and Extensive set of
storyboards a lot of time must be put aside to
complete them as well as all the other planning
documents.
Something useful that I learned was that when
producing a shooting script for a music video the
timings must be very specific to Ensure the music
video fits with the tempo of this song and the
conventions of the genre.
Organizational skills were incredibly important this was
because we want to include a variety of scenes and
locations, therefore, requiring a few different actors
and extras that need to be in a specific place at a
specific time. So, for organising actors, we had to
make sure that all the actors know when we are
meeting and where to meet so that filming does not
get postponed.
My project partner and I learn that a properly thought
out script requires a lot of time and consideration to
make sure It is clear enough and so that the narrative
is interesting and engaging for our target audience so
we had to keep our research in mind while typing up
the script.
Sticking to the production schedule is instrumentally
important to make sure that everything is completed
on time. Although we tried to get everything
completed on the day we set it to be done, it was still
a challenge keeping up with all of the documents in
the fairly limited amount of time we had to get them
up to a standard that we are happy with.
I learned that the locations must the very relevant to
the scene in order to give Contacts as we have a
limited amount of time dedicated to each scene and
the music is the only audio meaning that the visuals
are the primary way that viewers will understand what
is happening, therefore Clear distinct locations must
be chosen so that's each scene is more effective.
How will this be useful as your The script and storyboards will be useful in the filming
production process continues? stage as we insured that's they what extensive
enough for our production purposes. This means that
in the filming week we can reference these
documents because when making them we
visualised exactly how we want the scenes to play
out.
The organization will be very useful for the future
filming we will be doing but pause if we have
organised actors and locations properly, we should
be able to get the scheduled filming completed at
the times we have set to film certain scenes. It will
ensure that filming is not pushed back and will avoid
the knock-on effect all future work being pushed
back while catching up with filming.
The production schedule will be very helpful for
following our objectives and ensuring that work is
completed on time. It will ensure that I know what I
have planned to do when and where I am going to
do it so that my mind is freer to focus on the work
rather than worry about the actual schedule of the
work.
Looking into locations during the planning process will
be very useful in the filming stage as we will know
exactly what location we are using, how we want to
use it, and the space we to work with meaning that
when filming we are not working out how we want a
scene to play out when we arrive on scene,
especially when other actors and crew are there to
help.
What issues did you encounter The biggest problem we encountered was that the
whilst planning and how did you storyboards took an incredibly long time to do,
overcome them? especially in comparison to some of the other
documents. This meant that alongside working on the
set documents in the production schedule I also had
to make sure that I was completing the storyboards in
my own time to have finished in time. I had not
considered just how time-consuming a detailed set of
storyboards would be. To save time and help meet
my deadline I drew with stick figures but still the
amount of shots types meant that the process was
very time consuming however by working during my
own time in the evenings I managed to complete
them.
another issue my project partner and I encountered
was that the script took a lot of time complete, this
was because Although we had the idea for the short
film creating a believable end engaging script takes
a long time to get right. To overcome this issue, we
spent more time than scheduled on its two
completed so instead of stopping work at 4
scheduled we work still 9:00 PM to ensure that it was
complete and said that we were ready to move on
the next day.
How much work did you We spent a lot of time outside of lessons completing
complete outside of the lessons? work, the script took quite literally an entire day, we
spent from 9:00 AM till 9:00 PM working on it. I had to
complete the storyboards outside of lessons and
outside of the times that I had dedicated to work, so
storyboards were completed outside of lessons. Also,
character profiles had to be finished outside of lessons
as they had to be detailed and along with all of the
other documents we were working on we did not
leave enough time to complete the character profiles
in lessons meaning that I completed them in my own
time outside of lessons.
And location recces also had to be completed
outside of lessons as they required me to go to the
locations we want to film in and make notes of the
various attributes each location offered in terms of
lighting, sound, power, hazards.
Are you ready to film next week we are ready to film next week as we are working to a
and if not, what do you need to strict schedule and doing work in our own time
complete to be ready? outside of lessons we have managed to complete all
planning work ready for the filming stage.
Are your storyboards up to For my storyboards, I strictly kept to the script and also
standard? had visited the locations before making the
storyboards So that they could be completed to a
high standard. I also had my projects partner review
them in case I had missed anything out or if he did not
agree that they were up to standard. By checking
them with the planning work we had already done
and checking with my projects partner throughout
the process we ensured we were happy with the
storyboards, not only this but I reviewed previous
distinction grade work from a student who was in the
second year before me so that I could ensure my
work on the storyboards was up to standard by
reviewing the level of their work which from record
got a very good grades.

Week 6 This week was spent filming

How did you find the filming I found the filming process to be quite enjoyable and
process? efficient. We managed to stick to our filming schedule
therefore making our filming week very efficient and
on track. Due to location recces and location
research we managed to work out how we were
going to compose a scene before the actual filming
dates. as our pre-production was ready for the filming
dates we found that We were fully prepared for
filming, not only this but for the most part the weather
and recording was in our favour. Compared to
previous work this week of filming has been the most
affective in terms of quality and efficiency. I believe
this is due to the progress I have made after filming
other productions we kept strongly to our production
schedule and by the end of the week we managed
to get all of the filming finished for the short film.
Did you encounter any problems During filming we had surprisingly few problems, we
during filming? How did you anticipated that due to the amount of locations And
overcome them? scenes that we were filming that's we would run into
some problems. And we did however not as many as I
expected.
When filming scene 2 (the introduction of Nick) we
found that it was a challenge to film one of the
continuous panning shots in the bedroom as there
was not a lot of room to work with especially with all
of the props that we had included. there were
multiple times where the cameraman could not get
to the right position while the actor was moving
around the room and the limited floor space meant
that it was a challenge navigating both the
cameraman and the actor stop to overcome this
problem we practiced the scene multiple times and
worked out the best choreography for where the
cameraman should move and the time that he
should move in correspondence to the movements of
the actor, the multiple rehearsals on the day of filming
meant that we got the shot and we were happy with
the outcome.
Another smaller problem we ran into at the end of
scene 2 was when the actor playing Nick has to get in
his car and drive away quickly. On Camera or though
when reversing out of the property we attempted to
go as fast as safely possible it did not give the desired
effect. We decided to use low Camera angles and
closer shots to make the vehicle appear as if it is
going faster. This worked as the close the Camera
work men's that's the car was moving faster through
the frames meaning that it appeared faster when
reviewing the footage.
The final problem we encountered was in scene 7
during the part time job scene. As we were filming
during opening hours at the fish and chip shop in
which we were filming in that were customers going in
and out of the shop. to try to avoid any issues during
the scene we had previously decided to film during
quietest time however naturally there were customers
coming in and out, Fortunately there was a fairly small
amount of people moving in and out of the shop but
we were interrupted a couple times from customers .
To get around this we filmed the shops that did not
need to be filmed in a part of the shop where
customers were and then waited when the shop was
quiet to then continue filming the shots near where
customers have access to.
After reviewing footage, what do we reviewed the footage each day 2 make sure we
you feel you need to reshoot? did not need to re shoot anything after leaving the
location. This meant that on the day of filming we did
reshoot some shots to get them right starts now the
filming week is over and the shots have all been fully
reviewed we do not need to revisit any of our filming
locations to reshoot any shots or scenes as we had
reviewed them already on the day of filming.
What new techniques from your Appropriate white balance settings were very
previous units have you tried to important for the filming , we have learnt how to
use? properly use white balance in previous units and
implemented it's during the filming week to ensure
that we get the correct colouring for our shots so
that's when colour correcting during editing it is much
less complicated to fix any problems with the colour
tone , warmth or cold visual look off the shots.
Dutch angles were very useful and effective for some
of the shots. After covering Dutch angles in one of my
first-year units we managed to successfully implement
the use of this technique in various shots to connote
when something bad or sinister what's happening in
the scene. we found that they work very well and
were very relevant for the thriller genre.
The full focus technique was a very affective Camera
technique that I have learned from previous units. we
decided to use it in our short film because it was a
good way of drawing the attention and focus of the
scene to a specific part of the mise en scene. for
example we used this technique in one of our shots
when the protagonist is waking up the change in
focus represents the feeling of your eyes focusing
when you wake up from I'm sleep.
Are the locations you filmed at Due to the research we did into our idea locations
suitable to your production? and the locations that we could use during codes
and conventions it was not hard too work out what
kind of location we think would work best. I also did
some location scouting for the location recce’s which
drastically helped in deciding what locations are
suitable for our production. Both Lucca and I are
confident that we filmed at suitable locations for
each scene as we made sure to check and work out
how we would compose each scene before filming.
Each location is well themed and I believe gives good
context behind the message and idea of each
scene.
Are you keeping up with your during the filming week we have kept up with our
production schedule? production schedule very well. We have managed to
film all of the scenes for the short film and do not need
to do any reshoot. We strictly followed our production
schedule and due to the few problems, we run into
we managed to keep on track and get the
designated scenes filmed each day that we assign
them too. this is a big improvement from some of my
previous work where the filming would not be as well
organised And I would run into some problems with
keeping up, that was an issue as filming requires a lot
of organising and if it goes wrong it can be quite
complicated to organise reshoots.
What footage still needs No footage needs capturing as we have managed to
capturing? keep to our production schedule and all scenes have
been filmed. We also left time on each day to review
the footage in case we had to reshoot any of the
scenes before we left the actual locations.

Lucca spent the week end editing the production meaning that we had an edit ahead of
time we for week 7 we planned instead of editing to get account for the time to will take to
implement any catch-up work or improvements before the deadline.

Week 7 This week was spent planning your productions

What did you learn from your I found that planning the music video this week was
planning? harder than planning the short film. This is because the
script was a challenge as I had to match all of these
songs timings with the actions in the scenes this also
meant that I had to ensure the storyboard boards
were up to standard and also so that they match the
timings as well. I did find that the storyboards were
faster to complete though. I believe this is because
the production is only 4 1/2 minutes long however
there were more storyboards than I expected
because of the number of Camera angles and detail
we wanted to include. However, overall, we stuck to
the production schedule fairly well and did not have
to spend too much time outside of these scheduled
time to complete the work catching up in the
evenings. Overall the planning was fairly efficient but
not quite as organised as when we were planning the
short film as planning this music video felt more
complicated due to the timings and access 2 actors
that we needed.
From this, I learned how to properly time stage actions
in scenes to music under specific timings in the song.
As I had to make a lot of adjustments to the script and
timings I had to learn how to Plan and write the
scenes according to the style and tempo of each
specific part of the song so that the footage will go
fluently with the audio.
I also learnt that we have to be quite specific with our
music video as these script follows a specific structure,
we will need to make sure that the filming and editing
correspond with this to create a good flow and
aesthetic in the production.
How will this be useful as your What I learned from planning the music video will be
production process continues? useful in the future of the production process cause
the script most importantly has very specific timings
and actions, so during filming and editing we will
need to make sure that we referenced the scripts and
then we follow the timings so that during filming there
are the correct actions that go with the music but also
so that when we edit we can put the production
together without too many issues from footage that
doesn't match up with how we planned the audio
and footage together. it is useful that the planning
taught me how to properly time music video because
I will have to make good use of this when editing. As
the edit will feature transitions, cutting to the beat and
changes in clip motion (e.g. slow motion) I will need to
make sure that all of these suit the pace of the music
video and the timings that I sets during planning
otherwise the music video will not turnouts as I envision
it too I will not be to the standard that I want.
What issues did you encounter Health and safety was a concern when planning this
whilst planning and how did you was an issue because we wanted to make sure that
overcome them? our actor who is doing the various energetic activities
is safe and not at serious risk of injury, although they
will sign a consent form which makes them liable for
any injury we still do not want the actor to hurt himself.
To overcome this, we have planned safety measures
ahead of time colour for example in the mountain
bike scene that we have planned the actor will have
a helmet, knee pads and mountain bike specific
shoes so that he has the smallest chance of injury.
Also, all of the activities are based around tasks that
he is familiar with and that he is very competent at
doing, therefore, there will be no learning curve for
the actor and hopefully this preplanning will make
sure of that safety.
Other than that the only other problem encountered
was ensuring that all of the timings with the narrative
and the song matched up, this became an issue as
we had to make many adjustments and had to listen
to the song a great number of times to overcome this
problem. There were a lot of times where the narrative
and actions being done did not quite match up with
how we envisioned it with the music. To overcome this
I made lots of adjustments to the narrative so that it
synced perfectly with the music so that it flows the
way we wanted to during filming and editing.
How much work did you A lot of our planning was done outside of lessons.
complete outside of the lessons? Almost all the work was started in the morning and
finished in the evening this was to make sure that we
were on track and stayed on schedule so most of our
work was completed outside of lesson.
Are you ready to film next week We are ready to film next week; we stuck to our
and if not, what do you need to production schedule and did overtime outside of
complete to be ready? lessons to make sure that we are prepared for filming.
We just need to continue to make sure our actors are
available just in case they cancel on us so we will
consistently check on them informally to make sure of
this.
Are your storyboards up to The storyboards are up to standard after completing
standard? them I ran through the script multiple times to ensure
that they were fully relevant to the Scripts. I also had
my projects partner look at them as well to confirm
that he was happy with them and from previous work
my skills have developed enough for me to be
confident with my storyboards. Not only this but I
checked a former distinction grade second year
student storyboards to make sure that my storyboards
were up to standard.

Week 8 This week was spent filming

How did you find the filming The filming process was a bit of a challenge, but it
process? was enjoyable. We found that finding the correct
angles was easier because we had already planned
them in our storyboards but also still a challenge
because we wanted to get them right and it took
multiple shots to gets a lot of the important shots
perfect. Also, because the filming was of scenes that
were high energy such as mountain biking and
driving. We must make sure that the actor and
cameraman were as safe as possible Which was a
concern for the both of us. overall the filming process
was enjoyable but guessing the cinematic shots right
turned out to be harder than expected. This meant
that filming took longer than expected and following
our own personal deadlines that week for scenes
ended up being stressful.
Did you encounter any problems One problem we encountered while filming was that
during filming? How did you the actor (myself) Was very cold during two of the
overcome them? scenes this was cause we plan to have him wearing a
T-shirt and no extra layers on top of that. this meant
that during filming the actor was cold and this made it
more of a challenge to get the footage without the
character looking cold on Camera this happened in
a scene in which the actor is running and also in a
trampoline scene in which it started raining. To
overcome the problem of being cold during the
running scene we had the actor do some warm-up
exercises for filming so that he could start filming while
not feeling as cold due to previous exercise and an
increased heart rate. For the trampoline scene, we
use a similar solution. we had him rehearse and
practice jumps before filming so that one he knew
exactly what he was going to do for the filming but
also 2 so that he was warmed up and not cold while it
was lightly raining. We also kept a thick jacket nearby
for after the scenes so that he could warm up quickly,
also the locations are close enough to an accessible
home in which the actor can gain access too if he
needs to desperately warm up quickly.
Another problem we had when filming was that
during the mountain bike scene we were filming the
ground was slippery and covered in leaves, in the
location recce we did not anticipate how slippery the
leaves and mud would be for the purpose of the
production. To overcome this we put a lower amount
of air pressure in the mountain bikes tires so that it had
more grip we also had the actor riding the bike
practice at a safe speed going down the designated
routes for filming to make sure that was as little risk as
possible while still being able to record the needed
footage of the actor riding the mountain bike down
the trail.
a smaller problem that we had was that when filming
the trampoline scene, the actor performing the front
flip had not practised stunt for a few months. This
meant that when trying to rehearse the front flip the
actor struggled to land it correctly, however this was
not too difficult to overcome, as we had allowed
ourselves enough time the actor practised until he
landed it, it took a lot of attempts however after he
revised his technique and attempted the jump
multiple times managed to consistently land the front
flip and therefore we managed to get the footage
we needed.
After reviewing footage, are you After reviewing the footage, we were happy with
happy with what you have what we captured, this was because every day that
captured? we filmed we would review the footage before
leaving the scene so that we can reshoot while still at
the location. this made the filming process more
efficient and saved a good amount of time on
potential reshoots, it was very useful to be able to
reshoot on the same day as originally shooting the
scenes and that meant we could record footage that
we were happy with And we recorded in a higher
frame rate so that we could use a variety of slow-
motion and normal motion shots.
Have the techniques you planned Techniques we planned on using turned out very well
on using turned out well? after reviewing the footage. We included a variety of
shot types and techniques, from low angles to Bird's
Eye view close-ups, we managed to record a lot of
shots that we are very happy with by using a variety
of camera angles and shot types. In terms of
techniques, one of the best and Important techniques
was the 360-degree pan off the kitchen. This worked
out well as the footage was not shaky and we
managed to transition from the older version of the
character to the younger version in the same
continuous shot and when going from the younger
version to the older version of the character we
managed to achieve the same. The smooth transition
fit with the codes and conventions of the music video
and showed our skills as choreographer’s productions.
Close up swear an important technique for our music
video cause the music video is strongly based on the
joy and happiness that the protagonist is feeling
throughout the narrative, there for affective close
apps will show the detail of his face and this style of his
actions this then connotes to the audience how he
feels and the overall mood of the production. The
close up’s turned out well we tried to ensure that the
Shots of the characters face showed him smiling and
happy and that the other close apps showed the
energetic nature of his body movements which is
essentially key for our music video because we really
want to show the feeling of pure joy throughout
majority of the narrative.

Week 9 This week was spent editing

How did you find the editing The editing process was very time consuming, this was
process? because I wanted to make sure that I got the timings
and editing effects done properly and to a high
standard. I enjoyed the editing process for the most
part And I found that I learned some very useful and
visually creative skills like masking for example. It was
gratifying to finish the project and have a fully edited
production to present. It was stressful though as I
wanted to get it finished on time but I also wanted it
to be the way I have perfectly envisioned it in my
mind. This took up a fair amount of my time
throughout the week and meant that any catch Had
to be done in my own time. I found that I was
constantly changing the specific timings of footage
and where the petition links up with timestamps in the
audio, this led to the footage having to be constantly
corrected as changing the duration A1 clip or adding
a clip or deleting one leads too me having to readjust
the rest of the timeline to match up with the song and
the audio. i did find that through the editing I
managed to show a clear distinction between the
feeling of the older version of the character in the
intro compared to the joyous feeling of the character
throughout the rest of the narrative, using black and
white filters, editing sound and changing the pace
through the editing was a really effective way of
conveying the difference in feeling and getting the
message of the music video out which is that the song
makes the character feel young.

Have you encountered any 1 irritating problem I came across which we did not
problems whilst editing? How did pick up on during the filming is that in the 360-degree
you overcome them? panning shot you can see the actor get up and move
through the reflection of a microwave door. This
meant that viewers would be able to see the actors
switching place when they are not supposed to. To
overcome this problem, I used a scale I recently
learned; masking. I went through each frame that's
the microwave is in shot and put a black mask over
the reflection of the microwave door and adjusted
the position in each frame as the Camera pans across
then I feathered the mask to make the mask much
less noticeable, this meant that instead of the
reflection being shown it just looks like in microwave
with a shadowed interior which fixed the issue. The
editing effects are used can be seen below next to
the original version of the frame that I was editing at
the time of the screenshot.

Another issue I encountered while editing was that the

footage constantly needed to be rearranged. This
was because I made the mistake of implementing a
rough timeline of the footage and then matching it
up with the specific times in the song, the reason this
was a mistake is because every small change i made
whether it was deleting a clip, adding a clip, or
changing the duration of a clip which happened
often as I altered a lot of the normal motion clips to
make them slow motion, Ended up changing the
whole timeline as a result , so every time I made an
alteration to some with the footage I would have to
go through the rest of the footage and make small
adjustments so that the narrative links up with the
song along with the cuts, transitions and visual effects.
That was essentially the way I overcame this problem,
I spent extra time making small adjustments to fix it but
I know for the future to follow the structure of the
script and edit as a gradual process rather than a
rough structure with fine-tuning.
I also had a problem is the pace of the footage I
ended up having too much and then too little as I try
to match the pace of the footage with the song, to
overcome this i had to Restructure my original plan for
the length of certain scenes which meant that I had
to also restructure how they meet up with specific
points in the song's timeline However I believe I have
managed to restructure the footage without
deviating too far from my original idea and I'm happy
with the outcome and consistency between the
narrative and the song.
Are you happy with the outcome I am happy with the outcome of both productions.
of your productions? Why? Firstly looking at the short film, although We went over
the 10 minutes mark I believe that the quality is
definitely to a high enough standard to exceed the 5
to 10 minutes limit. I thought it would be a very great
challenge to create a short film without any dialogue
however through the use of lots of physical activity
and the limited amount of characters I believe we
have created a short film that does not require
dialogue to make sense or to be enjoyed so I'm very
happy with the way this turned out we managed to
work around the no dialogue barrier. I found that one
rule that we stuck to throughout filming was the one
more shot rule, this meant that even if we were happy
with the shot we got we would always do at least 1
more of the same action just in case we did not have
enough footage or if we needed a different angle or
shot type. Lucca’s editing of the short film works really
well as he has extensive skills in cinematic shots and
audio editing this meant that we had a very strong set
off sound affects an background music as well as a
visually aesthetically pleasing production. We really
wanted to show the strong feeling of thriller what's the
most important elements to our short film was that
viewers realised that the stalker was his father which I
believe through the flashbacks and narrative structure
we did very well.
Music video:
I am happy with the turnout of our music video as well
especially as we both made time to do our own edits
meaning that although I believe Lucca’s version
turned out better I still managed to produce a version
that I I'm happy with and has my style of editing on it.
The goal of our music video was to show how the
song made the protagonist feel young and therefore
he did the activities with the energy that the song
gave him. I believe that through the creative use of a
360 degree pan in which the character changes
actors and the resemblance between the two actors
who played the same character , we managed to
produce a creative and imaginative production that
displays our skills as film makers.
How did your productions meet Short film:
your target audience? Our appeal to our target audience in our short film is
that family reuniting and thrillers were popular among
the age group. In our production we use a thriller style
in which a stalker is following a young adult who then
turns out to be the young adults long lost father, we
believe this meets our target audience as it is a very
serious production with strong thriller elements and
codes and conventions that appeal through the
various scenes that have very edgy undertones and
tense feelings throughout. The twist at the end where
we revealed that the stalker is the protagonist's father
stops the production from being predictable which is
appealing to our target audience as they are mature
enough to be able to predict obvious endings to
narratives. From this twist, we then show the father
and son reuniting and we know that this appeals to
our target audience because from our research we
know that family reunions are popular among our
targeted age group of 25 to 40-year-olds.

Music video:
the appeal was simple yet fairly layered when it
comes to appealing to our target audience through
our music video. The idea is that the older version of
the character shows where our target audience will
eventually be and the younger version of the
character shows where they used to be in terms of
age so we have used 2 actors at both ends of our
target audiences age just below and just above. we
show how the older version of the character is tired
and bored but when he hears a song from his past he
becomes very nostalgic and we use a visual
representation of a younger version of the character
to show the energy that's the song makes him feel
through the character doing various energetic
activities. this aims to make viewers think about the
time they have now and how they're spending it and
how they could end up in the future. This is how we
appeal to our target audience.
What aspects of your productions Short film:
could have been better targeted In our short film we could have used a slightly more
to your audience? age-appropriate protagonist as although he was fairly
close to our target audience age he was actually a
bit young to suit the role however we had a lot to film
and limited access to actors who could spend that
time working on our short film For free who also had
good acting skills. we chose myself to be the
protagonist as I have adequate acting skills and
unlimited availability for the production, also we plan
to use my father as the stalker character this works
best because he has good acting skills, and he and I
have a good resemblance which was key for
audiences being able to understand the relation
between the characters.
Another aspect I would change is that the colouring
and saturation in the edit are too bright, vibrant and
happy. I think that if we used less saturated colour
tones and darker shadows for the footage it would
suit our target audience better the cause it visually
connotes a more serious and thrilling tone to the
production/narrative.

Music video:
In our music video the activities that the younger
version of the character takes part in may not have
been fully relevant to what 25 to 40-year-olds did it
when they were younger, although our production is
supposed to be a modern version of these activities,
having activities that are more directly linked to our
target audience is youth would be more effective At
sparking nostalgia which is the most important
element of our production.
I think that we could have used a Colour set for the
colour tone of the production that is relevant to the
fashion and styles of when our target audience was
younger as they these would be colours that spark
more nostalgia in our target audience and would
likely help achieve our goal of sparking nostalgia in
the targeted age group. the specific colour sets
would help remind them of their youth as we could
have used colours that they would have typically
seen back then.
How effectively have you Short film:
matched the codes and My short film Shows use of dramatic lighting to give
conventions you researched the impression that something is wrong and that's a
scene or shot has sinister undertones. We also used
earlier in the unit?
sound effects and lighting to create a strong feeding
of atmosphere, especially in the ultimate scene at the
end in which the protagonists being chased. Close-
ups were an effective way of showing the fair an
emotion of the character which is important as it is a
convention of thriller productions to show faithful
emotions of the character and to make the audience
feel closer to the action through close up Camera
shots. The close-ups also allowed us to keep the
mystery of the stalker something important in thrillers
as the mystery is what keeps the viewers guessing and
on edge.

Music video:
My music video had a fast pace which went with the
tempo of the song which is a very important
convention of music videos not only this but we
included various amounts of slow motion and normal
motion shots to match this tempo. Cutting to the beat
was also a very important convention of music videos
as it works fluently with the songs place and it is
aesthetically pleasing to the viewers. Another
convention was that we used a variety of different
and distinct locations which is commonly done in a
music video to show contrast and to put more into a
music video without needing anything else other than
the location and actions to give the context. Our use
of different and distinct locations made sure that we
had a variety of scenes that were easily
distinguishable which then kept the interest of the
viewers and corresponded with the codes and
conventions of music videos, in our case alternative
rock.
How do you feel your work I think that for both my short film and music video the
compares to existing professional general production value is not as high as existing
productions? professional productions that I have looked at
however Lucca’s editing does come close as he is
very skilled in that area but areas such as
Camerawork and sound we are not quite at a
professional standard I believe this is the cause good
Camera work comes from skill and the appropriate
equipment, we did not use gimble mounts or boom
mikes to make our production, our equipment and
lack of professional experience meant that's we
struggle to keep up with existing professional
productions in both the short film and music video.
through implemented sound effects we managed to
improve the professionalism of the short film and the
editing that Luke displayed managed to bring our
short film and music video closer to production. our
music video was easier to try to bring the standard up
as audio was not as big of a concern this was due to
the fact that the music took up most of the audio
track and sound effects were not needed, for us this
meant that the lack of sound helped Bring our music
video closer to a professional production parts as we
lacked features like lip-syncing which is very common
in professional productions we didn't quite manage to
make the music video look 100% professional.
However in terms of narrative and creativity I believe
we do come close to existing professional productions
pause we came up with an original idea that we put
certain twists on and layers into the narrative to
create more meaningful and engaging productions
which I believe differentiates our productions from a
lot of the typical narratives you see in student
productions which tends to be basic and occasionally
too heavily inspired by other professional productions.
Are there any areas where your I believe the Camerawork in the music video and the
production falls short? How would short film could have been better, at times it was fairly
you improve it next time? unsteady and is probably the most noticeable flaw to
our production value, we did plan to use a weighted
stabilizer however my cameraman was incredibly
reluctant to use it so in order to make sure we got the
filming done we decided not to use the stabilizer and
we worked with the footage that we got from the
freehand filming colour it works well in some aspects
starts next time I would like to make full use of the
weighted stabiliser as this will result in smoother shots
and better cinematic visuals.
Another shortcoming was that the Camera Recorded
on a fairly high exposure for some of these shots this
resulted in bright spots where I didn't want them, I did
manage to fix the majority of this problem through the
editing stage however it is easy to see if you pay
attention next time I would rather my cameraman
always used specific Camera settings for each shot
rather than occasionally keeping the same and
ending up with some overexposed shots.
What have you learnt about I have learned that I need to keep on Top of my
yourself to take into the Final organizational skills, in this project I really managed to
Major Project? What do you stay on top of my work but still has some issues with
keeping up. I managed to improve my skills in this

project but for my final major project, I want to make
sure that I am constantly organised and always on
top of my work this will result in less stress and a much
better workflow. I learned that sometimes I let work
build-up while focusing on completing previous work
and this results in an uneven workflow of spending too
much time on one piece of work and not enough on
another. I believe this I need to be more specific in
the future in how I structure when I'm going to do a
piece of work and then make sure that work gets
done in that time, however, I will run the risk of falling
behind. I have also learnt that I am sometimes too
much of a perfectionist and this can get in the way of
my workflow as I will focus on sometimes unimportant
small things that I spend too long on and then do not
allow enough time to spend my attention and focus
on when working on the bigger tasks at hand. Overall
I believe that I have learned about my organizational
skills so in my final major project I will keep a detailed
notebook so that I can write down and stay on track
of all of my work-related and personal tasks so that I
can produce a well thought out and thoroughly
worked on the production. I have also come to realise
that my editing skills are not where I would like them to
be although they are good enough to complete a
production I believe that I will need to improve them
have really get the most out of the footage and work
I put into my final major project, to improve these skills
I think I will allow more time in the editing process and
will also spend some of my free time learning the skills
that I want to be able to implement in the editing
process in my final major projects.
I also need to remember to continuously update and
upload my work onto my Weebly website as I have
missed out on some routine feedback by completing
work but not uploading it to my website, in the future I
will write in my notebook when I should upload work
so that I can get my routine feedback and also so
that I am better at implementing that feedback. I also
need to keep a closer eye on my deadlines as I
learned in this project deadlines always come quicker
than you expect and almost every task will take
longer then you think it will so checking vibe looking at
the deadlines and allowing more time to complete
work will be very beneficial in my final major project
personally I will need to stick to my schedule and
ensure that I do not deviate from the schedule by
procrastinating or helping with other productions
when I don't actually have that time to spare.
Are you on track with all of your I am mostly on track with all my work, the editing is
work? complete which I am happy with however I need to
get feedback on my productions so that I am ready
for pitches next week.
What work needs to be I need to get in contact with other students and my
completed outside of lessons? teachers to get feedback on the final versions of the
music video and short film so that I can prepare for
the pitches we are giving next week. I also need to
complete weekly blogs as I have fallen behind on
them due to a nock on effect from small pieces of
work not being completed on time.

Week 10 This week you pitched

How did you choose to pitch your We decided to use a PowerPoint presentation to
idea? display key points on each slide, along with this we
put images and screenshots on each slide relevant to
the aspect we were talking about. We believe that
the PowerPoint was the most effective way to
represent our work, we had key points on each slide
and Both Lucca and I rehearsed a script to follow so
that we could talk about and elaborate on the key
points shown on each page, this is an example of one
of our slides.
As you can see there are multiple screenshots from
our productions with short bullet points, this was a was
a visual way for viewers to look at the work we had
done and then from the script we had learned, Lucca
and I elaborate and give more detailed information
about each bullet point. This is essentially the structure
we used for many of our slides as it made for a visually
interesting presentation and then we could engage
with the people we were pitching too by giving our
scripted lines while looking at everyone in the room.
What made your pitch stand out One key mistake we wanted to avoid was reading off
and be different? Why would it of the PowerPoint, many people do this when
convince someone to invest? pitching, we deliberately made sure that we would
not have to look at the PowerPoint unless it was to
reference an image or subject on screen to give
better context to the points we were talking about,
this is why we rehearsed a script, this made our pitch
different from a lot of others as our talking did not rely
fully on the PowerPoint itself meaning that we could
still get the information across even without the
presentation but the presentation did improve our
pitch. I believe it would stand out as we were well
rehearsed and we were solid with our information on
the research, production and evaluation of our work. I
believe a big factor of this was the work, time and
effort that we put into our pitch as we made sure we
covered all important points for the pitch. We also
ensured that the points we were talking about were
actually important and that they were the ones that
made a difference rather than ramble about
information that the people we were pitching to
wouldn’t care about. For example we spoke about
the effect of lighting, props, mise en scene etc rather
than just stating what we did and giving empty
statements like “This improved our production
because it suited the target audience” we spoke
about why we included certain aspects, how it
impacted our production and why it suited the codes
and conventions or the target audience (or both). I
think an important part of why our pitch would stand
out is that we gave more information than simply
statements, we would give a statement, explain its
importance and why it made a difference otherwise
we would be stating points and the people we were
pitching too wouldn’t understand why those
statements were important or even why they made a
difference to our work. This is why I believe we would
be able to convince to someone to invest in our
production, we gave a layered and prepared
presentation that showed the work, effort and care
we put into our production and we gave detailed
insight into the various aspects of the work we did so
that the people who would potentially invest would
understand our work on a greater level than just the
2D imagery on the presentation board.
How did the pitch go? Overall I think that the pitch went very well, we were
confident which was very important as it is very
obvious when pitching if the pitchers are nervous and
this usually leads to mistakes so I was happy that we
were confident. As we knew our script, only needed it
for references to the next point we appeared
prepared and ready for the 10-15 minutes we had to
stand there for. I believe that it may have been a bit
boring at times as I believe we went into a little too
much detail sometimes meaning that viewers could
have been at bit bored by some of the points
however the general pace and flow was fairly
consistent and by comparison to the last pitch I did
this was a major improvement as we went in
prepared and sure of our work and production. We
went through the presentation smoothly and kept a
consistency between what we were saying and what
we had on the PowerPoint presentation. This meant
that there was a good flow to the presentation and
that we gave the impression to people watching that
we knew what we were talking about and that we
worked hard leading up to pitch to get everything
ready and to be on top of the heavy work load. We
kept calm and only had a small few stutters in our
speaking so I think that we came across confident.
We made a lot of eye contact with viewers
throughout the pitch meaning that we were
engaging with the people watching which I believe
made our production less robotic and more natural.
Is there anything you would do In my next pitch one thing I would like to do is not
differently in your next pitch? have any kind of script with me to cue the next point, I
hope to rehearse enough prior to the pitch so that I
know exactly what I want to say and so that I am not
holding any pieces of paper with cues on it. This
would mean that I could spend more time looking at
the viewers and I could point to the screen more
naturally to make the flow of the production even
cleaner and more engaging for viewers. I would also
like to have a more creative PowerPoint presentation
to present my work as although there is a level of
creativity in the presentation we created I still feel that
it was too basic for a creative media course and I
could have used far more interesting ways to present
the work. The presentation followed an image/bullet
point structure which I would very much like to
expand on for the next pitch I make as this would help
make my pitch more visually stimulating. One way I
could do this is to have the slides themed to the
production, like how a pitch for a heavy action based
production could use explosions and music in the
presentation to give it more impact and to make it
significantly more engaging for viewers through
various stimuli. I would like to have a more creative
themed pitch presentation relevant to the production
so that it is more interesting and so that it stands out as
I will clearly have it linked to the work.
For the next pitch I do I would like to script to have a
greater flow, although we did fairly well in this respect
I would like to have a better flow in my dialogue. To
do this I will integrate my points more, the points
made in this presentation were more like separate
listed items and I think integrating them more would
make the presentation come across with more of a
natural talking style rather than the somewhat routine
style that we used in our pitch to get the points across.
