This is an answer key for Robinson’s Paradigms and Exercises in Syriac Grammar,
6th edition. I hope this work will help those who are studying Syriac outside of the
traditional classroom setting and for those who would like to check their homework before
class. If you find any mistakes, please contact me, so that I can correct them. The Syriac to

1. As the Scripture says, “The woman was taken from man.” Because of this, the man will
leave his father and his mother, and he will cling to his wife.
2. Through the help of the Lord, we are writing hymns from the whole ecclesiastical year.
3. We have salvation, not in the blood of a sacrifice, but through faith in the blood of the
messiah.
4. After a few days, he went up from there to a different land and to different villages.
5. Christian baptism is in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
6. Men, we are not gods, but we are men like you.
7. Is this not Jesus, whose village we know? And his sisters and brothers are with us. People
say that he is the Messiah.

1. All sins will be forgiven to people, but blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will never be
forgiven.
2. The apostles were going around in villages and in cities in every place.
3. Be baptized – you, your wife, your sons, your daughters, and your whole house.
4. For your sake, we are killed every day. We are considered as lambs before our killer.
5. Wisdom says: “I was created by the Lord before all of his works, and before the heavens
and earth were made, I was with him.”
6. We were kept, so I believe because of God’s grace until today.
7. It was supposed by everyone that a great, mighty work had been done among them.
8. The child was taken from his fathers before he was baptized.
9. After the war, many Jews were crucified by the soldiers.
10. It is fitting for you that you keep yourselves and the whole monastery from those who
say that they are prophets.

2. What do I say – that we should receive a heretic such as this or that we should honor his
doctrine? Far be it!

they dress in white garments.
5. The king wrote the commandment and sent emissaries, so that it was preached to you,
and they will preach the commandment in the villages.
6. If this was not from God, it was not able to be done.
7. The wretched brother was attacked by demons all the time.
8. You think that you are able to change the law of our fathers.
9. They were slandering the blessed one, and he was handed over to the judge.

4. They did not have a kingdom because the king had handed it over to the Romans.

7. They led him before the governor, and they accused him while saying, “We heard this
man when he was blaspheming about God.”
8. I found the apostle in prison, and I helped him greatly.

cave of robbers.

Chapter 19

1. My lord, do not cut down the tree. Leave it, and I will till it.

3. This food, which the Lord serves to you, strengthens us.
4. If you have a sacrifice at the altar, do not bring it while there is anger between you and
your brother.
5. This ancient book belongs to the monastery, and it is not lawful for the monks to sell it.
6. My brother, this is my doctrine, and if an angel from heaven preaches something to you
that is outside of it, do not receive it.
7. Jesus spoke to her, “Woman, believe me that not on this mountain and not even in
Jerusalem will you worship the father.
8. Because people say, “What is the reason for this commandment,” by the help of God, we
will speak a little about it, and we will explain it.
9. When the judge knew that he was not able to silence the man, he commanded, “Lead this
robber to prison.”
10. Many of his disciples who heard were saying, “This word is difficult. Who is able to hear
it?”

Chapter 20

1. On that day, the one that is on the roof should not go down to take something which is in
his house.
2. Because of this land you know the promise of God, which I will give to you and your
sons.
3. Whoever commands that this mountain be taken away and fall into the sea, it will be
done for him.
4. If I go up from the earth, I will draw all people to myself.
5. And Jesus went up to the temple, and he expelled those who were buying and selling
there.
6. My son, cling to wisdom, and do not forsake it, and it will keep you your whole life.
7. The emissaries were commanded to go up to the monastery and to give the letter to the
bishop.
8. The demons were subjugated by the apostles, and they expelled many in the name of
their lord.
9. Take the oil and pour it on Aaron’s head and anoint him.
10. The king had a promise from the savior, whom I send saying, “One of my disciples will
give to you and to your kingdom the word or salvation.”

Chapter 21

1. Whoever sheds the blood of men, by men his blood will be shed.
2. Our father said, “Go say to to your mother that her sister is alive.”
3. Say to the apostles, “Everything that you bind on earth will be bound in heaven.”
4. They were mourning on account of the blessed one with many tears.
5. When the priest brings the offering to the Lord, the gate of the Temple will be opened,
which was closed.
6. I am writing to you, who hold to the truth, that when you are pressed, your faith will not
be lost.
7. Fire came down from heaven and consumed the offering, and great fear held them.
8. And he taught them and said in his teaching that you should not mourn when you are
oppressed because thus they oppressed the prophets.
9. The found the robber and seized him, and bound him, and led him to prison.
10. The king did not delay to fight against his enemies. But at once he went along his
soldiers to destroy their city.

3. Do not be anxious about anything, but at all time let your prayers be made known before
God.
4. Let it be known to your holiness, that we received your honored letter.
5. I say to you that unless your righteousness is more than the Pharisees, you will not
inherit the kingdom.
6. The Scriptures inform us that our lord will be born while Herod the king is still living.
7. The Lord says, “Before you were born, I knew you, and before you went from the womb, I
gave (made) you a prophet for the nations.
8. If I commit my body, so that it should burn, and there is not love in me, I gain nothing.
9. Lord, stretch out your right hand to take care of us and to help us.
10. It is fitting for you to know on what account we brought you here.

1. I am not able to give to you the gold that you asked for.
2. It is not evil in your eyes that I ask for a gift from you.
3. And the Lord said to Jacob, “Return to the land of your fathers, and I will do good to
you.”
4. The blessed one returned to the mountain and to his cave when he refused the honor of
men.
5. And they were seeking him because of his disciples and his teaching. But he will
completely decline to say anything.
6. You will not go after other gods to make them and to worship them. And you will not
anger me with the work of your hands, so that I do not afflict you.
7. The king commanded the emissaries, “Go up to the city and go to my brother and greet
him in my name.”
8. The bishops said, “It is wearisome to us because of the this dispute, which has taken
place in the church of God.
9. At that time the queen grew old and became sick. And the people were asking their
companions in the city, “Who is going to inherit the kingdom?”
10. My sons, “I grew old after I married again.”

Chapter 24

1. The right hand of the Lord lifts me up so that I do not die.
2. Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For with the judgment that you judge, you
will be judged.
3. And suddenly there was a great movement, and the foundations of the prison were
shaken, and all the doors were opened at once.
4. The child was near to death, and her parents instructed the priest to baptize her at once.
5. Next the priest worships before the altar, and he stands and kisses it, and lifting his voice,
he says this prayer.
6. I instruct you, my son, that you should not rise against the commandment of the king of
kings. Without me as well, your people will die.
7. The apostles rose and spoke to them, “It is fitting for us to obey God more than people.”
8. Our Lord looked at the child and spoke to her, “Child, rise!” And her spirit returned, and
she rose.
9. But whoever works, his wage is not reckoned to him, so that it is by grace, but as
something that is owed to him.
10. I am not able to believe unless I am persuaded.

Chapter 25

1. This is the gate of the Lord, which the righteous ones enter in.
2. In order that I may love you, you also should love one another.
3. Show mercy to us, who are suffering, on our sins, and we are seeking mercy from God,
the lord of everything.
4. Jesus said, “Touch me and know that it is I. For, a spirit does not have flesh and bones.”
5. Like the word of the apostle, “Women are not permitted to speak in church.”
6. If you permit me, I will speak to you concerning the reason of this dispute.
7. The disciples of the apostles put me in a basket and let me down from the wall.
8. Our Lord entered into Sheol and brought out many dead. Thus Satan was reproved and
convicted, by whose hand many were bound.
9. How is someone able to enter the house of the strong man and plunder his utensils
except if he plunders the strong man before.
10. I wrote to you, my beloved, not that I may confuse the matter, but that you may be
assured concerning me by these reasons.

1. Many are called, and few are chosen.
2. Fate is not compelling us to to make something when we do not want to make something.
3. Who is the one chooses for himself disgrace instead of honor or death instead of life?
4. The king said to Judas, “Here I am willing that you should build for me a palace.” Judas
said to him, “Now I am not able to build at this time.” The king said to him, “At which time
are you able to build?”
5. The governor, answering, “What do you desire that I should do to this one, whom you
call the king of the Jews?”
6. As it is written, “Jacob I loved, and Esau I hated.” What should he say, “Is God guilty of
wrong?” Far be it!
7. Who is the woman who a coin and loses it? And does not she not seek it until she finds
it? And when she finds it, she calls to her friends and says, “Rejoice with me!”
8. Jesus said to his disciples, “They will cast out demons, and they will place their hands on
the sick, and they will be made well.
9. I am placed the foundation and another is building on it. Then, everyone should see how
he builds on it.
10. We are seeking from our father, the bishop, whether we should crease from the dispute
with the fathers of our companions.

Chapter 27

1. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it. And whoever loses his life because of me,
will find it and will live.
2. We believe in one God. The Father, the upholder of everything, the maker of everything
that is visible and invisible.
3. Evil is going to exist, but woe to whoever by which it comes.
4. He began to show his disciples that he was going to go to Jerusalem and suffer many
things.
5. The kingdom of God is like a man who throws seem in the ground, and the ground
brings him fruit.
6. The blessed ones answered and said, “We are coming because of the name of Jesus our
Savior, that he may deliver from death and remain forever. Those lives are made worthy
forever and ever.
7. By your grace, he made us worthy, so that we might know and worship your divinity: the
Father, the creator; the Son, the savior; the Spirit, the life giver.
8. The vision appeared to her, and she lifted her eyes and looked in her own house. And she
was filled with great joy.
9. When your mind rejoices, offer praise. And all the time, pray before God.
10. When you are beginning to pray, it is not required for you to bring many petitions.
11. Build this house and pure offerings will be brought to me, and I will be pleased with
them.

1. Because you saw me, you believed. Blessed are those who have not seen me and believe.
2. Her companions wanted to accompany her, but she declined and said, “Leave me that I
may go alone.”
3. And the lord of the vineyard sent his servants. They struck him and killed him. And he
sent his son to them, and when they saw him, they threw him outside the vineyard.
4. You did not choose me, but I chose you that you should bear fruit.
5. Concerning this mystery which was hidden for ages, as the apostle said, “As far as I am
able, I persuade you.”
6. The martyr rose and thus prayed, “Give to me, our Lord, this crown because it reveals to
you that I am seeking it because I loved you with all of my soul and life. I will see you, and I
will rejoice.
7. Show me, O teacher, concerning Joshua, son of Nun, where the Scripture says, “ܑHe will
take a wife and beget children.”
8. I called you from my whole heart, Lord. Answer me, and I will keep your
commandments.
9. We thank God that we are worthy to be ministers of the new covenant, not by writing but
by the Spirit. For the writing kills, but the spirit gives life.
10. So, thus you should pray: Our Father, who is in heaven, may your name be sanctified.
May your kingdom come, may your will be done as in heaven also on earth. Give us the
bread we need daily. And forgive us our sins, as we also forgive those indebted to us. Do not
bring us to temptation, but deliver us from evil. Because yours is the kingdom, and the
power, and the praise forever and ever. Amen.

Chapter 29

1. In Nicaea there were gathered 318 bishops from the whole world.
2. Jesus asked them, “How much bread do you have?” They answered him, “Seven and a few
fish.”
3. For he said to Moses, “They will take a lamb from the 10th day of the month, and it will
be kept for them until the 14th day of the month.”
4. How is it possible that an old man be born? It is not possible to enter his mother’s womb
again and be born.
5. Herod sent and killed all the children of Bethlehem from two years and below.
6. The Scripture said concerning the Seven, which God completed on the sixth day all of his
works that he did, and he rested on the seventh day.
7. All of the martyrs who were martyred that day numbered 400.
8. I believe in the Holy Trinity. But this is in one God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy
Spirit. The three persons are equal. They are in one nature, but three in person.
9. The wall of the city’s foundation is 12, and on them are the 12 names of the apostles of
the Son.
10. On June 24 in the year 674, according to the Greeks, the armies confronted one another.
