NEW STYLE OF TEACHING USING URL

(CHALLENGE, DIFFICULTY, EXPERIENCE, UTILIZATION OF INTERNET


RESOURCES IN TEACHING)
MIBS STUDENTS

A. INTRODUCTION

In Indonesia, English is a compulsory subject which is taught in Junior High


School and Senior High School as a second language. As a result, the Indonesian
government always makes effort to improve the quality of teacher and other component
which are involved in education process. The education in Indonesia has been improved
from time to time; one of them is established by curriculum. According to the competence
based curriculum of Junior High School, the goal of foreign language learning is to learn
how to communicate by using the target language in oral or written. So after learning
English, students should be able to communicate in English spoken or written.
The functions of learning English in Junior High School are; first, by studying
English students are expected to have a means to develop their knowledge of science,
technology and culture. The second is, students are expected to be able to support the
development of tourism. The third is, the students are able to learn and continue their
study in a favorite school. The forth is they are able to know the world through the
internet which communicated in English.

Internet is one of the most important to improve our English skill, there are some
English programs provided completely, as a professional teacher we have to operate those
programs or URL spread on internet to gain more varieties learning. On this paper, the
writer will explain the challenges of using URL in teaching and learning, difficulty,
experience and utilization of Internet resources in teaching.

B. DISCUSSION

English Teacher become used to teaching traditionally and classically using


textbooks, grammar book and other conventional references. Based on the development
of technology, English teacher should move to the IT equipment such as audio visual
media, electric pictures and other URL given on the internet.
There are some problems happened among English teachers, that all of those
should be solved soon.
1. The challenges of using URL in teaching and learning

The challenges that often faced by every English teacher in teaching and learning
is the lack of internet media, particularly in suburban schools that there is no internet
connection, then the low human resources so that teaching system is not varieties and
become monotonous and even to be boring for students.

Such challenges also occur in the senior teachers who do not keep up with
technology. We know that the use of the URL in the internet is very easy to operate if
they want to try it. As professional teachers we have to share our knowledge with other
teachers, so that our school will be easier to achieve teaching objectives.

problem in providing meaningful access to the curriculum has been the practice of
viewing English-language learners with learning difficulties as simply low-
performing native English speakers. It is critical that teachers avoid this reaction when
confronted with students who do not use English proficiently. In thinking about
curriculum access, the important goal is that students understand the critical concepts
being presented, rather than knowing the correct English label for a particular concept.

One educator described what it was like to come to the United States knowing very
little English: she suddenly changed from perceiving herself as a "smart" person to
someone with many academic problems. This perception remained private, because there
was no opportunity to share it with anyone else. She believes it would have been
enormously helpful to have heard from other students about these same kinds of feelings
– she would have understood that these feelings were normal and that the difficulties were
an understandable reaction to learning in a new language and environment.

The unfortunate consequence of viewing English-language learners as having


limited ability is the tendency to merely adopt watered-down versions of the standard
curriculum, a practice that is in clear conflict with curriculum access. A second-rate
curriculum denies English-language learners access to high-quality instruction and,
ultimately, real academic opportunity.
In thinking about potential solutions and remedies, it is important to remember that
there is no one right way, and currently there are no experts who have precise remedies.
Nevertheless, rapid advances are being made in this area, and some promising practices
are emerging. At the heart of these practices is a clear recognition that English-language
learners with learning difficulties face unique learning challenges that demand
innovative practices.

2. The difficulty in operating the URL


The difficulties in operating URL is not secret anymore, because not all the
teachers in Indonesia proficient in operating the Internet, therefore there must be spirit
and effort to be able to master the technological developments in the field of
education. Usually, the difficulty occurs because there is no effort and intention to
move forward, from now on

we should be able to change yourself to be more of variation in our teaching process.


do not despair because we lack today, but look forward that our students is a national
asset that we have to fight for our place in the future.
in my opinion, the difficulty that occurs is:
1. Least knowledge about the site URL
2. No effort to be able to operate internet
3. Environments that do not support
4. Nothing internet networks
5. Lack of teaching electronic media
3. The experiences in using URL
My experience in using a URL when I tough kind of texts for nine grader, my
students are very enthusiastic in understanding the material given, moreover in my
school there is free internet network, so that my students are very easy to access
whatever they want.
The most favored by my students is when they immediately saw an interesting
plot and read by native speakers.
My student can operate it quickly also, so every time I go to class, I've been
waiting my students, and they said "what URL now sir ? Eventhough I didn’t use the
URL in every teaching because I adjust the material as well first. Here is the URL :

4. The utilization of Internet resources in teaching through URL program


On this site, http://lppbi-fiba.blogspot.com The utilization of Internet
resources in teaching through URL program are :

1 . Integration
The most important in the English education program should be
integrated , not an additional program . Teachers should be involved directly
with the program , such as the provision of homework and classroom
interaction
2 . Computer capability
Students do not always have the expertise in using computers ,
especially in using the Internet .
3 . liveliness Teacher
Teachers should actively motivate students to use an Internet . If
necessary , the teacher should make handouts or instructions to use computers
and the Internet , especially how to use a web browser or send an e - mail .
We have to motivate our students in language and teaching as follows :
1 . A Letter to a Friend
As an introduction to writing letters to friends activity , students are asked to
access www.mario.com / card.htn , a site that provides animation and graphics card
that comes with music , etc. for free . This activity is considered fun by students
when
they choose funny cards , and write a few lines of words to his friend . After that ,
nominally required to send the card to a friend via e - mail . Requirements that are
required by this site is that students must have an e - mail alone .
2 . A Formal Letter
When teaching A Formal Letter , students are asked to visit the site of the
World Wildlife Fund ( http://www.panda.org/home.cfm ) . On the site , students
can read the problems that occur in the world around them , especially about the
endangered species that exist on earth .
3 . A Description of a Person
Students are asked to describe someone who is chosen ( could be one of a
classmate , or a teacher so they know ) . Then the students were told to make a
short post about the person. The text sent to other students via e - mail . Students
who receive such e - mails should be able to guess who is meant by the sender .
4 . An Argumentative Essay ( Couple or contrast )
Students are given a certain readings that are considered able to provoke
arguments and more advanced students according to the students' level of
understanding . The reading material is usually associated with teenage problems .
5 . A Description of a Festival of Ceremony
Internet is based on a common definition of multi- cultural and indefinitely , is
the best source of information to determine the mores and customs of other
countries
on this earth . Surfing the Internet and explore the traditions and culture or

ceremonies as yet unknown , as the same as watching movies , listening to


traditional music or pictures that can provide a memorable experience for students
to decrypt a festival or celebration that is more authentic and meaningful ,
6 . A Newspaper Report
Previously described , when talking about information retrieval on the Web
then it should have the information sought is information that is happening or
being discussed . Newspapers on- line is the latest virtual resources that can be
obtained for free .
To access the index of newspapers from around the world can access
www.onlinenewspaper.com . Students are asked to find the latest news and make
a summary of the news , read the headlines and ask them to make it into a
complete sentence , predict and reconstruct the content of an article , comparing
the presentation of the same story from other state newspapers . In addition ,
students are asked to observe the goings on around him , and then write it in the
form of news .
7 . A Description of a Place
Web is a great place to look for places that have never known before . To that
end ,students are required to access the site or www.go.com www.travel.com .
Students were asked to describe a place they want to visit it . In addition , students
are required to make questions about the places they visit .

C. CONCLUSION

Language teaching system using internet media is not something strange to us,
because the internet is very supportive in achieving the goals of teaching. Actually, when
we teach using the URL in the class, all of our students are more spirit and enthusiasm in
participating in the learning process.
There are definitely some things that we face in the use of internet media that is:
not all English teachers master the science of technology, lack of infrastructure in
particular school, the lack of motivation in using the internet, the most serious is that we
only teach students how to do national exam, so it does not motivate students to learn.
