To narrate/recall a story - means to tell a true or fictional story. You might write to amuse,
touch, or thrill your reader. You might also write to express thoughts and feelings. Some kinds
of writing to narrate are short stories, novels, and personal narratives.

Example: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Harry Potter is the most miserable, lonely boy you can imagine. He’s shunned by his relatives,
the Dursley’s, that have raised him since he was an infant. He’s forced to live in the cupboard
under the stairs, forced to wear his cousin Dudley’s hand-me-down clothes, and forced to go to
his neighbour’s house when the rest of the family is doing something fun. Yes, he’s just about
as miserable as you can get.

Harry’s world gets turned upside down on his 11th birthday, however. A giant, Hagrid, informs
Harry that he’s really a wizard, and will soon be attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and
Wizardry. Harry also learns that, in the wizarding world, he’s a hero. When he was an infant,
the evil Lord Voldemort killed his parents and then tried to kill Harry too. What’s so amazing to
everyone is that Harry survived, and allegedly destroyed Voldemort in the process.

When Harry hears all this, he doesn’t know what to think. However, everything Hagrid tells him
turns out to be true, and with a joyful heart Harry starts wizarding school in September. He
quickly becomes best friends with a boy named Ron Weasley, and before they even make it to
Christmas, they break tons of school rules when they attack a troll and prevent it from killing
fellow student Hermione Granger. After the troll incident, the three become inseparable, and
Harry is amazed to have found such great friends. He is constantly busy trying to stay on top of
the mounds of homework, as well as participating in weekly Quidditch practices. Quidditch is a
popular sport among wizards and Harry is the youngest Quidditch player in over a century. It's
also a game Harry loves more than anything else at school.

As the year progresses, the three friends set out to solve the mystery of the gigantic three-
headed dog that is guarding something in a deserted corridor in the school. They figure out that
a very valuable object, the Sorcerer’s Stone, is being hidden in the school, although they don’t
know why. When one of the professors starts acting as if he’s trying to steal it, they quickly take
action to circumvent the theft.

Harry is forced to do battle with the wizard that tried to kill him so many years before, Lord
Voldemort. He’s able to save the Sorcerer’s Stone, although he’s almost killed in process. The
school headmaster, Dumbledore, arrives just in time to save Harry.
The school year ends spectacularly. Harry, Ron, and Hermione are honored for their service to
the school, and Harry leaves to go back to the Dursley’s for the summer feeling as if he’s finally
found a place where he really belongs.
To explain - means to tell about a topic by describing what, why, and how. You can explain a
topic in any type of writing. Some examples of writing to explain are instructions, science
observation reports, and explanations.

Example: Newton’s Law of Motion

The motion of an aircraft through the air can be explained and described by physical principals
discovered over 300 years ago by Sir Isaac Newton. Newton worked in many areas of
mathematics and physics. He developed the theories of gravitation in 1666, when he was only
23 years old. Some twenty years later, in 1686, he presented his three laws of motion in the
"Principia Mathematica Philosophiae Naturalis." The laws are shown above, and the application
of these laws to aerodynamics are given on separate slides.

Newton's first law states that every object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight
line unless compelled to change its state by the action of an external force. This is normally
taken as the definition of inertia. The key point here is that if there is no net force acting on an
object (if all the external forces cancel each other out) then the object will maintain a constant
velocity. If that velocity is zero, then the object remains at rest. If an external force is applied,
the velocity will change because of the force.

The second law explains how the velocity of an object changes when it is subjected to an
external force. The law defines a force to be equal to change in momentum (mass times
velocity) per change in time. Newton also developed the calculus of mathematics, and the
"changes" expressed in the second law are most accurately defined in differential forms.
(Calculus can also be used to determine the velocity and location variations experienced by an
object subjected to an external force.) For an object with a constant mass m, the second law
states that the force F is the product of an object's mass and its acceleration a:

F=m*a

For an external applied force, the change in velocity depends on the mass of the object. A force
will cause a change in velocity; and likewise, a change in velocity will generate a force. The
equation works both ways.

The third law states that for every action (force) in nature there is an equal and opposite
reaction. In other words, if object A exerts a force on object B, then object B also exerts an
equal force on object A. Notice that the forces are exerted on different objects. The third law
can be used to explain the generation of lift by a wing and the production of thrust by a jet
engine.
To express emotions - an expressive writing, the writer's purpose or goal is to put thoughts and
feelings on the page. Expressive writing is personal writing. We are often just writing for
ourselves or for close friends. Usually, expressive writing is informal, not intended for outside
readers. Journal writing, for example, is usually expressive writing.

Example: Fifty Shades of Grey

"Fifty Shades of Grey" is the story of a 22-year-old college student, Anastasia, who begins a
relationship with a 27-year-old very successful and powerful businessman, Christian Grey. She
meets him while interviewing him for her college newspaper. When they later meet up in
Portland, Oregon, he rescues her after she over-imbibes and she ends up chastely spending the
night in his Heathman Hotel room.

He is intrigued by her and offers her a non-disclosure agreement and a contract that keeps their
relationship purely sexual and defines it as one of "dominance and submission." She doesn't
sign the agreement but loses her virginity to him.

The novel plays on tension over the nature of their relationship and the possibility of romance
and love as well as Ana's sexual explorations in Christian's darker tastes in sexuality. Christian is
a control freak with physical and mental scars from child abuse before being adopted by loving
parents. However, he is likely as seduced by emotion for her as she is enticed by sexual
explorations and a romantic relationship with him.

Further scenes in the first book introduce his lavish lifestyle with astonishing Seattle apartment,
personal helicopter, and chauffeur. But there is also tension with an older woman who first
introduced Christian to BDSM and allusions to a former girlfriend who figures in the later books.
Ana meets Christian's parents and the reader is also introduced to Ana's mother and stepfather.
To request or to command – means to ask politely or formally for something.

Example: Request Letter for Salary Increment

Salary increment letter is written by an employee to their employer imploring for a raise in pay. A
request for an increase in salary can be made in several ways. If one is confident and knows
they deserve it, one can make a strong case for a salary increment, using a formal salary
increment letter. The letter should be in an official tone as it is a professional letter. It should
clearly mention the reason and the increase the employee seeks.
To express agreement/disagreement – means to agree or to disagree about a certain
topic/issue

Example: Agreement and Disagreement on Emotional and Behavioral Problems in a Sample of

Preschool-Age Children

The present study aimed to identify predictors of agreement and disagreement

concerning emotional and behavioral problems reported by the mothers and teachers of
preschool-aged children. Participants included 172 (89 boys) children, their mothers, and their
preschool teachers. Mothers were asked to complete the Child Behavior Checklist for Ages 1½-5
(CBCL 1½-5), the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), and a sociodemographic questionnaire, and
were observed engaging in an interactive task with their child. Preschool teachers completed
the Caregiver Teacher Report Form for Ages 1½-5 (CTRF). The results show low cross-informant
agreement. None of the studied variables predicted cross-informant agreement; however,
maternal psychopathology and the presence of an assistant in the classroom were predictors of
disagreement between mothers and teachers. Although these results highlight the influence of
maternal and school context variables on the disagreement among informants’ reports on the
emotional and behavioral problems of preschool-aged children, additional research in this field
is needed.
To argue - an arguing essay attempts to convince its audience to believe or act in a certain way.
Written arguments have several key features: • A debatable claim or thesis. The issue must
have some reasonable arguments on both (or several) sides. • A focus on one or more of the
four types of claims: Claim of fact, claim of cause and effect, claim of value, and/or claim of
policy (problem solving). • A fair representation of opposing arguments combined with
arguments against the opposition and for the overall claim. • An argument based on evidence
presented in a reasonable tone. Although appeals to character and to emotion may be used,
the primary appeal should be to the reader's logic and reason.

Example: Debate about death Penalty

The death penalty violates the most fundamental human right – the right to life. It is the
ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment.

The death penalty is discriminatory. It is often used against the most vulnerable in
society, including the poor, ethnic and religious minorities, and people with mental disabilities.
Some governments use it to silence their opponents. Where justice systems are flawed and
unfair trials rife, the risk of executing an innocent person is ever present.

When the death penalty is carried out, it is final. Mistakes that are made cannot be
unmade. An innocent person may be released from prison for a crime they did not commit,
but an execution can never be reversed.
To inquire - The main purpose of writing a letter of inquiry is to ask or collect information about
any kind of business-related matters.

Example: Ways To Inquire About A Job Opportunity Without Actually Asking

1. Don't Ask About Job Opportunities

Ask for information and introductions, not a job. The likelihood of your network knowing of an
opportunity that fits your background is slim. But the chances of them sharing valuable
information about the company culture or making introductions to others with important
insights is high. Work the networking chain, and you will eventually be introduced to someone
with a live job lead. - Barbara Safani, Career Solvers

2. Connect With Those In The Position You Want

Candidates should reach out directly to the person in the position they want — not the
recruiter or hiring manager. While some recruiters may reply, many are overloaded with
LinkedIn messages and emails. Reaching out to someone in the position will allow you to learn
how that person got to where they are, and you may also be able to connect with their boss,
the hiring manager. - Kyle Elliott, Kyle Elliott Consulting

3. Network Your Way In

Research is the prelude to networking and directly reaching out to hiring managers. By
canvassing the company websites, LinkedIn, current articles written by key employees, you will
determine the individuals to contact and the issues facing the organization. Connecting on
social media and looking at your own network for referrals will allow you to network your way
in to inquire about job opportunities. - Donna Poudrier, Hellmann Career Consulting
