Most of us have heard about and admire
the many youth, inspired by the example
of Greta Thunberg, who are raising the
alarm about climate crisis inaction; or how
the courageous young people in Hong
Kong are standing up for freedom against
an authoritarian regime. But all over the
world, many, many young people, who are
not in the public eye, are working on social
justice, the struggle for freedom and the
active promotion of human rights.
The Nelson Amnesty group invites
people in Nelson and area to join us in
Amnesty International’s annual Write for
Rights global letter-writing campaign,
which this year focuses on situations
where the rights of young people under
the age of 25 are being violated as they take

“Nikki” passed
away peacefully after
a short illness on
November 19, 2019 at
the age of 90 years.
Predeceased by her
husband Domenico De
Laurentiis October 15, 2010.
Survived by daughter Aurora (Bob) De Laurentiis; son
Dino (Alice) De Laurentiis; grandchildren Dale (Alicia),
Mike, Adam (Heather) Foyle, Keegan and Kiana De
Laurentiis; great-grandchildren Nicole, Mitch (Montana)
Foyle, Tyson, Dominic Foyle, Autumn Dodds-Foyle.
Nikki cooked at Charlie’s Restaurant and River’s Cafe in
Salmo, BC, owned and operated a restaurant in Vancouver,
BC with her late husband in the early 1960s. She travelled
to Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Florida, Las Vegas, Pennsyl-
vania, New York, Reno, Bahamas, Mexico and Australia.
Nicoletta belonged to the Lady Lions in Salmo, Salmo
Ladies Hospital Auxiliary and the Salmo Catholic Wom-
en’s League. Her hobbies and interests included garden-
ing, homemaking, cooking, canning, baking, knitting
and crocheting.
Funeral Mass was held on Thursday November 28th at
Immaculate Conception Church. Entombment was at
the Nelson Memorial Cemetery, Nelson, BC on Friday
November 29th.
Special Thank You to family and friends for your visits
and support when mom became ill as well as your
kind words and expressions of sympathy during this
sad time.
Thank you also for the cards, flowers, food and calls,
your kindness and generosity has been comforting.
Donations gratefully accepted for the BC Cancer Society.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be

Columbia River Treaty terms now
underway, the opportunity is ripe
for seriously exploring large-scale
projects to recover at least some of
enormous ecological disruption that
the Treaty dams caused. For example,
a determined effort, largely spear-
headed by Indigenous peoples, is
well underway to bring back to the
upper reaches of the Columbia the
oceangoing salmon that spawned
here prior to the construction of
obstructing dams.
People who reside in the Koote-
nay and Duncan Lake area won-
der whether the time is right also
to lobby for a fish passage over our
local Duncan Dam – the first dam to
be constructed after the Treaty was
signed in 1961.
In this slide-talk, Peter Jonker of
Friends of the Lardeau River, will help
us learn about ecological conditions
that existed prior to Duncan Dam; in
what ways the Dam profoundly dis-
rupted these ecological conditions;
how this affected key fish species
and, whether/how a year-round fish
passage over the Duncan Dam would
help reverse at least some of the dam-
age that was done. This presentation
will be held on Tuesday, December
10 at the Lardeau Valley Community
Club Hall in Meadow Creek.
Peter is a retired University of Sas-
katchewan Adult-Education faculty
member, resides near Duncan Dam
and is a Friends of the Lardeau River
Board Member.

 Used oil recycling facility
officially opens in Nelson
BC Used Oil Management Asso-
ciation (BCUOMA), a not-for-profit
group dedicated to the collection and
recycling of lubricating oil, oil filters,
oil containers, antifreeze and anti-
freeze containers in British Colum-
bia, today announced that the Nelson
Leafs Bottle Depot located at 120 Silica
Street in Nelson will now be respon-
sibly collecting, storing and handling
used oil and antifreeze materials, year-
round. The new infrastructure that has
been installed will provide the resi-
dents of Nelson and those in the sur-
rounding areas, with an easy, free and
eco-friendly way to recycle used oil,
antifreeze, filters and containers.
The Return Collection Facility (RCF)
infrastructure grant that Nelson Leafs
Bottle Depot received from BCUOMA
provided them with a modified sea
container to facilitate the responsible
collection and management of used
oil, antifreeze, filters and containers.
“Nelson has grown tremendously
over the past several years and the Nel-
son Leafs Bottle Depot recognized the
need to provide a used oil recycling
facility to their clients in order to meet
the demands of the growing popula-
tion,” said David Lawes, executive
director, BC Used Oil Management
Association. “The annual roundup
events were met with such a posi-
tive response that Nelson Leafs Bottle
Depot felt it was important for the res-
idents of Nelson to have a year-round
convenient, free and easy facility to
recycle their used oil and antifreeze
materials.”
BCUOMA’s RCF infrastructure
grant program’s purpose is to ensure
that there are sufficient RCFs across
British Columbia for DIY consumers
to take back their used oil and anti-
freeze materials for processing at no
charge to consumers. The program
also requires the responsible environ-
mental handling, collection, trans-
portation, storage, processing and
recycling of used oil and antifreeze
material using economic, efficient and
environmentally acceptable options.
BCUOMA has also created more
signage at BC used oil recycling cen-
tres that explains how easy it is to
recycle materials properly. Munici-
palities, private businesses, nonprofit
organizations, and other sectors inter-
ested in BCUOMA’s RCF new infra-
structure grants can find out more

Used oil is a valuable resource and
there is a market for used oil. If it is
recycled at a BC used oil recycling
centre, it can be recovered and reused.
Used oil can be re-refined into new
lubricating oil and used as a fuel in
pulp mills, cement plants and asphalt
plants. Any vehicle maintenance facili-
ties, automobile owners and other
machinery maintenance operations
that use oil also can use re-refined
oil. Additionally, used oil filters con-
tain reusable scrap metal, which steel
producers can reuse for metal prod-
ucts like rebar, nails and wire. Used
antifreeze can be reprocessed to pro-
duce new automotive antifreeze. Plas-
tic oil and antifreeze containers can
be recycled into new oil containers,
flowerpots, pipe, guardrails and patio
furniture.
Each year, approximately 50 million
litres of oil and three million litres of
antifreeze are collected and respon-
sibly managed through the approxi-
mately 300 public collection facilities
and over 4,000 generators across the
province, which are managed by the
BCUOMA program.

fed separately from other cats, or a single cat household. If I
