Yesterday, after school Mrs. Henderson discovered that her ME
cookies were stolen from the cookie jar. Only three people
visited her after class and she doesn’t know who took them.

We need

one question to ask the investigators

-CANNOT be a “Yes” or “No” question

-Your question also cannot be “who stole the cookies?” :)

2. Write your question on the whiteboard at your table. The investigators will
come around with the answer.

While Investigators are Going Around:

3. Answer the remaining questions on your handout, make your final inferences
and prepare your statement for the final verdict!
The Verdict- CONVINCE the JUDGE

JON!!!!
Jon stole the peanut butter cookies! Jon noticed the cookies sitting on Ms.
Henderson’s desk during science class. Knowing he had forgotten his lunch box
and would be hungry during football practice, Jon began scheming how to get the
cookies. He asked Mrs. Henderson to look through his science journal and
strategically slipped the cookies into his sweatshirt while she was busy reading.
He rushed out of the room after, leaving his overdue library book on her desk.
The Evidence:
- Peanut oil on his hands
- Library book left behind
- Library “overdue” slip found
In his backpack

Explain in your own words: What is an inference?

Inference vs. Observation: Read the following statements and CIRCLE the statements that you think
are INFERENCES.
1. The sun set at 7:00 last night. It was bright orange and pink!
2. The trees are turning color because the days are getting shorter and colder.
3. The plant is very wilted due to lack of water.
4. There were a lot of friendly dogs at the park today.
5. I’ve never seen so many shooting stars in my life! It must have been a
meteor shower.

In your group, plan the best strategy to analyze your evidence and keep track of the clues.

1. Use the evidence chart on your worksheet to help you!

2. Everyone in the group must write down their own observations.

3. Think about how you want to answer the questions you come up with.

4. Make sure you also watch the time as you will have limited time to look at evidence.
