ADAVB Convention Brochure 2012 THE ADAVB PROGRAM IS PROUDLY SUPPORTED BY:

The Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre

Friday 10 and Saturday 11 August 2012
President’s Welcome 2012
On behalf of the ADAVB I welcome you to join us at this year’s biennial Convention,
The Art, Science and Ethics of Dentistry 2012. This year’s Convention will again
feature concurrent sessions, allowing a greater choice for delegates, and the
Continual Professional Development Committee has worked hard to provide a
diverse and interesting program, ensuring that there is something for everyone.

We have two highly regarded international keynote speakers this year, in conjunction with a raft
of high calibre national speakers. Dr Linda Greenwall (UK) will speak about the future of aesthetic
dentistry with a minimally invasive approach, including tooth whitening, composite bonding and
microabrasion. Professor Trevor Burke (UK) will introduce the concept of pragmatic aesthetics in the
treatment of tooth wear over two sessions, with an emphasis on bonding and tooth preservation in
an evidence-based approach.

Distinguished local speakers include Professor Ian Meyers, Associate Professor Kerrod Hallett,
Mr Rowan Story and Professor Michael McCullough, sharing their knowledge and expertise across
the worn dentition, dentinal hypersensitivity, medications in dentistry, early childhood caries and
dental ethics.

In addition to the scientific program, there are a number of concurrent conferences that enable
all members of your practice to be involved. The Dental Assistants Conference 2012 is an annual
event with a comprehensive program. A full day Practice management Conference and a conference
for Dental Hygienists developed in conjunction with the DHAAVB, are new additions to the
Convention program. These new components make it possible to include all practice staff in the
Convention Program.

There will also be an opportunity to visit the Australian Dental Industry Association’s exhibition, to
give you the ability to view the latest equipment and materials, making the most of the customary
convention specials and catching up with colleagues.

The Art, Science and Ethics of Dentistry 2012 is sure to be the highlight of the continuing
professional development calendar this year. Together with the incoming ADAVB President,
Dr Gordon Burt, I am looking forward to seeing you and your staff at the Convention.

2012 Victorian Dental Show
The Australian Dental Industry Association (ADIA) is pleased to host the 2012 Victorian Dental
Show which is being held in conjunction with this year’s ADA Victorian Branch Convention. It
provides an exciting opportunity for dentists and allied oral healthcare professionals to see the
latest dental products from Australia and overseas.

ADIA recognises and understands the symbiotic relationship that exists between the dental
profession and dental industry. Our members share your commitment to excellence and take pride in
providing quality products necessary to provide optimal dental care outcomes.

ADIA is the peak representative body for the suppliers of dental equipment and plays an increasingly
influential role in improving the technical and regulatory environment in which dental products
are manufactured and distributed in Australia. We value the support of the Australian Dental
Association (ADA) in this task.

On behalf of the members that are exhibiting at the 2012 ADIA Victorian Dental Show, it is with
pleasure that I invite you to the welcome reception in the exhibition area on Friday, 10 August 2012
between 5:30pm and 6:30pm.

We look forward to seeing you there.

In the aesthetic driven society that we live in a beautiful smile is an essential asset. There has been an exponential
demand for patients requesting smile improvement. Whilst the previous model of mass veneer placement has cause
mass destruction of healthy teeth there are other simple ways to improve smiles. The current trend is towards
minimally invasive aesthetic dentistry and the lecture will discuss options for treatment and the treatment
planning protocols that need to be in place in order for to accomplish this minimally invasive modality. The lecture

3:15pm Speaker Introducing the concept of pragmatic aesthetics in the treatment of tooth wear. Part 1.
The impact of the so-called “cosmetic” dentistry, if assessed by the number of dental makeovers in television
programs or in celebrity magazines, has increased substantially in recent years. This has effectively increased the
public’s awareness of their dental appearance, and in turn, may have increased the volume of porcelain laminate
veneers placed, although quantification of this is difficult. What is quantifiable, however,
is that tooth wear is increasing in incidence, especially in younger people, and that the Session supported by
issues around treatment of this are, therefore, becoming increasingly relevant.

Tooth wear, in the past, was treated by gross destruction of teeth using a turbine drill for crown preparations – a
strange way to treat teeth which were already compromised! However, advances in bonding techniques have
enabled the use of minimally invasive treatment using composite resin bonded to worn surfaces. This presentation
will discuss the concept of pragmatic aesthetics, how to achieve an aesthetic improvement where needed – the
optimisation of bonding agents for this treatment and will indicate the rates of success which might be expected.
All of this will be discussed in the light of current research evidence into the longevity of the techniques described.

Rochford (UK) Dentistry is changing in innovative ways. To stay at the cutting edge, we have to look at ways of

11.45am – 12.30pm Mr Rowan Dental Ethics – from Brass Plates to Dragon Tattoos
Story Dentistry is a truly remarkable profession. In it’s relatively short modern history it has developed a
standing and level of scientific integrity and innovation that places it with the leaders of the health
professions in the developed world. The profession has the knowledge and clinical skills to almost
eradicate dental disease. However – the pressures of the market economy, regulation, international
trade and workforce shortages will affect the profession. In this complex environment it is
reasonable to ask whether there is any longer a place for dental ethics.
12.30pm – 1.30pm Lunch
1.30pm – 2.15pm Mrs Tracey Eating Disorders and Dentistry
De Poi Eating disorders are a very serious and complicated illness. This talk will provide guidance for help
when you are presented with a patient who you suspect has an eating disorder. I will discuss
the types of eating disorders, signs and symptoms, common myths and what you as a dental
practitioner may be able to do to help.
2.15pm – 3.00pm Ms Angela ‘Do as I say, not as I do’ – Motivational Interviewing starts with you!
Fundak The role of self care in the context of chronic condition management and disease prevention is
recognized as a critical element in supporting quality of life and longevity. Many ‘lifestyle’ diseases
are supported by individual choices and perceptions of health. This session will enable the oral
health professional to explore the opportunities to choose behaviours in support of improved
health outcomes. Practical examples from the literature and the textbook ‘Health Behaviour
Change in the Dental Setting’ will be provided as group discussion.
3.00pm – 3.30pm Afternoon Tea
3.30pm – 4.15pm Dr Elaine Lim Orthodontics Considerations for Dental Hygienists and Dental Therapists
Dental Hygienists and Dental Therapists play a vital role in the dental team and as part of this
are often directly or indirectly involved in orthodontic care. This lecture will cover all aspects of
orthodontic considerations for the dental hygienist and dental therapist, including screening for dental
developmental disturbances, outline of treatment options available to patients, tips and tricks in the
orthodontic setting as well as oral hygiene considerations.
4.15pm – 5.00pm Dr Adam What is Perioscopy?
Rosenberg Traditionally, the more aggressive treatment option for people suffering from the moderate
to advanced stages of periodontal disease was surgery. Now there is a new procedure called
Perioscopy, featuring miniaturized digital video technology, which enables the clinician to diagnose
and treat areas below the gum line without the discomfort and inconvenience of surgery.
Dr Rosenberg will discuss the introduction of this new technology into his practice and how it may
be a very useful tool in treating patients with periodontal disease.
