Exercise 3: Dr. Jose P. Rizal: A Fully Functioning Person?

Activity:

1. Fully functioning person- Carl Rogers (1961, p.183) claimed “the concept of the
fully functioning Perso0n, it was an attempt to spell out the picture of the person
who would emerge if therapy were maximally successful” This fully function person
as Carl Rogers (1961) described is a person who is in touch with his deepest and
innermost feelings and needs. The individual understands their own emotions and
place a deep trust in their own instincts and urges. “Unconditional positive regard”
plays an essential role in becoming a fully functioning person.
Healthy Personality- According to Sidney Jourard, healthy personality is a way
for a person to act, guided by intelligence and respect for life, so that the person
will grow in awareness, competence, and the capacity to love the self, the natural
environment, and other people.

2. Characteristics of a Fully Functioning Person

 Awareness of all experience: Fully functioning person exhibit an
awareness of all experience. No experience is distorted or denied, all of it
filters through to the self. In other word, this person is aware of all their
experiences
 Freshness of appreciation for all experience: They live fully and richly
each moment, all experiences are potentially fresh and new. Experiences
cannot be predicated or anticipated but are participated in fully rather than
merely observed.
 Trust in one’s own behavior and feeling: They trust in themselves,
where no information is threatening; all information can be perceived,
evaluated, and weighed accurately.
 Freedom of choice, without inhibition: A fully functioning person feels a
sense of freedom to make choices without constraints or inhibitions. They
do not feel compelled, either by themselves or by others, to behave in only
one way.
 Creativity and spontaneity: They are creative and live constructively and
adaptively as environmental conditions change. Allied with creativity is
spontaneity. They are flexible and seek new experience.
 Continual need to grow, to strive to maximize one’s potential: The
fully functioning person may face difficulties as they learn to grow as they
are actualizing. Actualizing refers that the self is always in progress,
striving, growing, spontaneous, and challenged and stimulated instead of
settling for the familiar.

3. Healthy Personality Vs. Unhealthy Personality

 According to the definition, healthy personality is a way for a person to act,
guided by intelligence and respect for life which means, nurturing this in
one’s self can result to the capacity to love the self as well as other people
and to grow with awareness and competence. On the other hand,
unhealthy personality is a person who is not able to think rationally, that’s
why they were found in any criminal activity like a serial killer or
anything else because of his strongest super ego over ego.

4.

 The eye can possibly symbolize a healthy personality; in fact, the eyes do
provide lots of information about another person’s emotional state. We can
easily say if one person is having a healthy personality through his or her
eyes. An eye has an interconnection to healthy personality because like
an eye it cannot hide what is true.

5. Dr. Jose Rizal Characteristics and fully functioning Person’s

Characteristics

 Dr. Jose Rizal was really a great influence to the youth because of his
wide influence and outstanding achievements. I can say that he have the
characteristics of a fully functioning person because he chose to sacrifice
his own life for the nation’s freedom in which he have a sense of freedom
to make choices without constraints or inhibitions. He does not feel
compelled to sacrifice his own life. This characteristic is called freedom of
choice, without inhibition.

6. I can proudly say that I possessed some of the characteristics of a fully

functioning person like I’m open to all experiences; I embrace life, get curious
and seek to learn new things. Additionally, I have the freedom to choose the life I
want to live, the things I want to do, the people I want to spend my time with and
the freedom to make my dreams come true. The moment I realize that I’m free, I
will do whatever I can in order to make change, in order to create something that
will last long after I’m gone. But in some instances, I cannot be perfect and
possessed all the characteristics of a fully functioning person.

7. If majority of Filipino citizens will be able to develop a healthy personality the

beneficial effects are, the nation will attain economic growth because of the
people who can work efficient, productive, and competent on their fields. On the
other hand, there will be harmony and peace between individuals because
having a healthy personality you have the capacity to love the self as well as
other people.

Integration:

I realized that, healthy personality is a way for a person to act, guided by

intelligence and respect for life which means, nurturing this in one’s self can
result to the capacity to love the self as well as other people and to grow with
awareness and competence. “Unconditional positive regard” plays an essential
role in becoming a fully functioning person.

I resolve that, having healthy personality can result to a good relationship to

others in terms of respecting their situations and decision. Being competent is also
one of the important keys of having a healthy personality in which you are capable,
sensible and effective. Those who are highly competent feel well-prepared to deal
with life.

Exercise 4: Toward Becoming and Ideal Citizen

Activity:

1. Healthy Personality Characteristics

 guided by intelligence
 respect the life of others
 awareness to all experiences
 competence
 capacity to love the self and the natural environment

2. The primary healthy personality characteristic that must be developed first, in

order could also be developed that the others is respecting other people’s life
and opinion.

3. Respecting other people’s life and opinion can ensure the development of the
other healthy personality characteristics because respect is the sense of worth or
personal value that you attach to someone. Respect is a positive view that you
form of how someone is living their life; self-respect is your view of how you’re
living your life. Respecting yourself means giving and defining your own worth
and value as a human being.

4. The relationship between my chosen primary healthy personality characteristic

and the characteristics of an ideal Filipino citizen-socially concerned, productive,
morally, upright, and patriotic is they are both concerned to the relationship
between people as well as to have peace and order to the society.

5. The line in the lyrics of “The Greatest Love of All” that can possibly define us
an ideal Filipino citizen is “If I fail, if I succeed, At least I live as I believe” we, as a
person having a healthy personality are the one who are competent and capable
to strive hard for us to achieve our goals no matter how hard the situation and no
matter how it takes. As an ideal Filipino like Dr. Jose Rizal, we should also have
the courage and determination to make a change even in our own little way.

Integration:

I realized that, respecting other people’s life and opinion can ensure the
development of the other healthy personality characteristics because respect is the
sense of worth or personal value that you attach to someone. We, Filipinos are good in
socializing which means, we can easily get along with the people we want to talk to.
Resulting, we can build a strong foundation if respect and good communication is there.

I resolve that, the relationship between my chosen primary healthy personality

characteristic and the characteristics of an ideal Filipino citizen-socially concerned,
productive, morally, upright, and patriotic is they are both concerned to the relationship
between people as well as to have peace and order to the society. Communication and
respect are the instrument that tied up to a good nation.
Exercise 5: Developing a Positive Self-Concept

Activity:

1. Strengths:

 Supported by my family in all matters

 Hearing positive comments make me to strive harder
 Dedication

Weaknesses:

 Disorganized
 Sensitive
 Not comfortable of taking risks

4. Ronalie Perez as my partner. “I chose you as my partner because I want to

deeply know you for me to avoid conflicts between us”

7. Conclusions regarding my experiences and my Classmate’s experiences

 Therefore I conclude that there are still differences between strengths and
weaknesses between me and my classmate. But as we go farther there
are some instances that my classmate’s strengths and weaknesses are
the same. Like for example, family, friends and loved ones.

8. Importance of Positive Self-Concept

 The importance of having positive self-concept is we can easily decide on

a certain situation without a doubt because we are confident enough that
the decision we made is good. The potential for a positive self-concept lies
within each of us. A person with a positive self-concept treat each other’s
with respect and help them treat each other’s with respect.

9. The relationship of a Positive Self-Concept with the Characteristics of a

Person with a Healthy Personality and Ideal Filipino Citizens

 There is significant relationship between positive self-concept with the

characteristics of a person with a healthy personality and Ideal Filipino
citizens; it lies on respecting other’s life, opinion and decision. For us to
have peace and order we should understand each and everyone.

10. Applying Learnings gained with this Exercise

 I can apply to myself these learnings gained with this exercise through
nurturing those matters in my everyday living as a simple student and
citizen. Socializing with other people and understanding their viewpoints
can literally make good communication that will lead to solidarity.

Integration:

I realized that helping other people is an important thing we should do to

develop positive self-concept. We can easily gain a high self-esteem because we
have the capacity to get along with other people. Also, it was said that, a person
with a positive self-concept treat each other’s with respect and help them treat
each other’s with respect.

I resolve that there is significant relationship between positive self-concept

with the characteristics of a person with a healthy personality and Ideal Filipino
citizens. The similarities lie on respecting the opinions and decision of others. By
that, we can easily identify and recognize each other’s strengths and self worth
uniqueness.

Exercise 6: Catching Positive Values

Activity:

1. Five (5) Values Learned from Family/Parents and how it is transmitted to

you

 Using “Po” and “Opo” to elders or respect for elders

 Faith and religiosity
 Hard work
 Hospitality
 Family Orientation

Those values are transmitted to me through practicing and understanding those

values in a concrete way. When I was a child, my parents’ guide me and taught me
those values that are why I adopted those learnings and raised well.

2. Five (5) Subcultural/Cultural Values learned from neighbors,

schoolmates, fellow Filipinos and how were these values transmitted to you

 Utang-na-loob (debt of gratitude)

 “Hiya”
 “Pakikisama”
 “Bahala na”
 Filipino time

Those cultural values are transmitted to me through the community where I

belong; the people around me influenced me with these values because I have
seen their way of living and how they nurture this kind of cultural value.

3. Positive and Negative Implications of the abovementioned Values

 ` The positive implications of the abovementioned Values that I have

learned/caught from my family, community, and Philippine society are it
taught me to be generous, respectful, God-fearing, to work hard for
achievements and to be hospitable. Also, it helps me to repay a person
from whom one has received a favor; and I learned how to be sensitive to
the feelings of others. On the other hand, there are negative implications
of those values in which when it comes to “Bahala na”, this is the common
expression of the majority which means this rest on the fatalistic outlook
and strong dependence on the “spirits” who will take care of everything if
they are really meant for a person.

4. 10 Rizalian Values

 Love of God
 Purity and Idealism
 Noble Conduct
 Love of Fellowmen
 Love of Parents
 Charity
 Love of Country
 Courage
 Will-Power
 Honesty

These are the values that I have to learn in order to increase my chances of
becoming a good Filipino citizen. We need to be God-fearing and pray what is best for
many, we should be kind and considerate to our fellowmen, like Rizal, our actions,
thoughts and behavior are according to what is ethically right. Great and unconditional
love was given to parents, we should appreciate their sacrifices. Jose Rizal has this
value of love of country which means we should not doubt to take risk even in our own
little way.
5. Values influence Personality Formation

 Yes, values do really influence the personality formation in a way that it

taught us to be an ideal Filipino citizen. Parental/Cultural teachings had
great influence on our holistic personality. Still, there are positive and
negative implications of values on our personality formation because
some of them are not really a good effect in an individual’s life.

6. Case Analysis

a) Maria sees nothing wrong with cheating during examinations.

 Obviously, what Maria thinks is ethically wrong. First and foremost,
everyone should know that cheating is a sin and cheating is against to the
rules of school. It is about purity and idealism, to be an ideal Filipino
citizen; we should act properly and with a good intention.

b) Senator Luz thinks that Senators and Congressmen should not be given
“Pork Barrel Funds”. More than 100 congressmen think that they should be
given their full 570-million “Pork Barrel Funds” which they say they will use
for the development of their district/province/city.
 Noble Conduct will lead to this way; it is about balancing what is true and
what is not. It is about purity of action and thoughts. Clean behavior
requires that religiousness be shown in good conduct, clean conscience
and upright thinking.
c) John believes that finishing college degree is not important.
 Courage, John do not believe of what he can do. He does not have the
courage to pursue his dreams. He can’t be an ideal Filipino citizen
because of less courage that he has.
d) Felipe believes that Filipinos are inferior to Americans.
 It is about love of country, we should be like Rizal, and dedication to one’s
duty was an admirable virtue of him. In saying that it is man’s duty to seek
his own perfection, Rizal set an idea for man to attain.
e) Don Placido’s yardstick for success is the size and number of bank
accounts that one keeps and the beauty and number of lovers that one has
in his “harem”
 There is no measurement for success; it is about how you challenge
yourself on how you will get to the top. It is about will-power, if you have
the will to achieve your goals or you have the determination nothing is
impossible. Size and number cannot be a measurement of success.
Integration:

I realized that, we need to be God-fearing and pray what is best for many, we
should be kind and considerate to our fellowmen, like Rizal, our actions, thoughts and
behavior are according to what is ethically right. We can be like him if we want to, it is
about the determination and willingness to do what is right.

I resolve that, values do really influence the personality formation in a way that it
taught us to be an ideal Filipino citizen. Parental/Cultural teachings had great influence
on our holistic personality. Additionally, those values have negative and positive impact
on our lives in a way on how we will act according to what is wrong or what is right.
