Abstact

Soft drink is beverages that is very favored by the people especially

teenagers.Increased consumtion of Soft drink could adversely affect dental and oral health.
Soft drink contain carbonated, carbohydrates, calories, acid and dyes. This study is aims to
determine the effects of consuming too many soft drinks. The method used in this research is
the study of documents taken from secondary documents. The results showed that soft drinks
can affect oral health in the form of saliva which becomes acidic so that teeth become carious
easily. In addition, the content of soft drinks can accelerate the buildup of plaque on teeth

Background

Now soft drinks have become a favorite drink for the community, especially among
teenagers and children. Soft drinks are a favorite because of the diverse flavors and types.
Each type of soft drink gives a unique sensation to people who consume it. According to
world wide food (2014) Soft drinks in Indonesia increased 48.57% each year, Indonesia is the
fifth largest consuming country soft drinks. Soft drink that is often chosen for consumed in
Indonesia is carbonated and isotonic drinks.

Since the discovery of soft drinks by Priestley (1767), soft drinksis increasing every
year with different types and flavors. Nowadays soft drinks are very easy to find not only in
supermarkets, soft drinks can also be found in stalls and traditional markets. Many companies
are competing to create various kinds of soft drinks that people can enjoy.

People often consume soft drinks only because of the unique taste sensation without
knowing the composition of these soft drinks. Though these products contain many chemicals
like carbonated, cafein and acid that are not good for health, especially dental and oral health.
Empty calories in this soda does not provide any nutrition for the body. This is also
reinforced after the research conducted by a study conducted from Chreighton University,
Nebraska (2001), found the amount of calcium in the body will decrease after consuming
carbonated drinks that have high levels.

Formulation of the problem

1. Does consuming too much soft drink affect oral health ?

2. What ingredients in soft drinks cause damage to teeth ?
3. What damage can be caused if you consume too much soft drink ?

Purpose

1. To determine the effect of consuming soft drinks on oral health

2. To find out what ingredients from soft drinks can cause damage
3. To find out what damage can be caused from consuming soft drinks

Discussion

Soft drinks like sprite, fanta, pepsi etc. have no nutritional value (in the case of
vitamins and minerals). The sugar content is higher, more acidic, and many additives such as
preservatives and dyes. The main ingredient contained is carbonated water which contains
carbon dioxide. Another additional ingredient is caffeine which is used to cause addiction
(such as cigarettes).

Drinks consisting of carbonated water, dyes (caramel and / or caramel sulfitamonia),

caffeine, phosphoric acid, potassium benzoate, potassium citrate, sodium benzoate,
natriumsitrate, sodium cyclamate which produce an average pH produced are 3.4. This
acidity is strong enough to dissolve teeth and bones.

Citric acid is one of the main substances that make kicking taste in soda. Naturally
this substance exists in fruits such as oranges and lemons, however excessive consumption of
citric acid can corrode teeth. In extreme cases this corrosion can cause teeth to break easily ,
it was proven by the results of research published in the General Journal Density In their
writings the researchers said that in the first three minutes when drinking soda ten times more
corrosive compared to juice drinks.

According to Aritonang's research (2014) about the relationship of drinking frequency

softdrink to the pH of saliva where obtained the result is that the more frequency of drinking
soft drinks, the lower the pH of saliva. then the conclusion of the research by Rahmawati
(2015) is consuming too many soft drinks a day will result in a decrease in pH saliva is below
normal. Frequency of consumption of soft drinksrisk will cause changes in salivary pHare in
acidic conditions causing demineralization of the teeth.

More oftensomeone in consuming soft drinks(soft drink) in one day will increase the
pH of salivary acid and accelerate the occurrence of dental caries, which is based on research
conducted by Pang (2015) in Shanghai about observe the phenomenon of dental caries and
identify risk factors that might be related tocaries in children in Guangxi Province betweenin
2011 and 2013, the results obtained that frequency drinking soft or sweet drinks can be risk
factors associated with dental cariesin children.

In addition, the content of soft drinks and isotonic is deposited in the oral cavity, so it
can form plaque easily (Prasetya, 2008). Dental plaque or so-called biofilm is a place to live
microorganisms. Dental plaque will isolate on the surface of the teeth which will be mixed
with saliva so that the plaque is increasing, the plaque will spread to other parts of the teeth
(Carranza cit Glickman, 2012). Plaque growth depends on salivary factors, diet, age, oral
hygiene, tooth structure, systemic disease, and bacteria (Carranza, 2012). Clinically, dental
plaque is a layer of soft bacteria that is not calcified, accumulates, and adheres. In the form of
thin layers, plaques are generally only seen with using disklosing. In the form of a thick layer
of plaque seen as a yellowish or gray deposit that cannot be removed by gargling (Elley and
Menon, 2012).

Conclusion

Soft drinks, which are currently the favorite drinks in the community, have a variety
of types and flavors. But soft drinks contain a variety of chemicals that are not good for the
body, especially teeth and mouth. Tooth and mouth disorders caused by the content of soft
drinks are caries, saliva becomes acidic and plaque builds up on teeth very quickly. Therefore
it is important to know that consumption of soft drinks must be reduced to maintain the health
of our teeth and mouth
