Chapter I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction

The evolution of Technology has an impact on the way we work, Teach

and Learn. According to Kor Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Information and Communication Technology has transformed Education.

Teachers in public school are under pressure to provide more effective and

efficient learning environments and educational experiments to their students.

According to Santos (2008) as a teacher there are some of the things that

can be done to enhance the use of other instructional materials for the mastery of

the subject matter. First, read newspapers daily, subscribe to broadsheet or

spend time to read in the library, or listen to any news program on radio or

television. The role of the teacher is changing from one being the supplier of

knowledge to the facilitator of communications between the learners, interaction

between the teacher and learners is critical to the success of learning as well as

student motivation. With technology-based learning increasing. It is necessary to

determine how to make the best use of the tools that are becoming available to

enhance learnings.

In traditional classrooms, the teacher has been at the center of knowledge

and considered the content authority. It is still the responsibility of the teacher to

be authority in the classroom, but there is a need to shift from a content authority,

to a learning authority.

Technology based instructional materials and perceived interest of grade

School which aimed to harness Technology as a powerful tools that can improve

motivation and engagement in learning process. Develop multiple-intelligence

through multimedia presentation of materials.

The DepEd is Five-Year Information and Communications Technology for

Education Strategic Plan has an overall vision “21st Century Education: For All

Filipinos, Anytime, Anywhere”.

Background of the Study

This study deals with the effect of technology based instructional materials

and perceived interest of grade 9 students in Araling Panlipunan subject in

Alaminos Integrated National High School. There are several factors which

contribute to the students’ interest towards Araling Panlipunan and one of this is

the use of instructional materials during the discussion.

Students now a days are considering Araling Panlipunan as one of the

most boring subject. They are not interested to listen and participate with the

discussion due to reason that it is more on traditional story telling. In this case,

the researcher wants to know if there’s any significant effect between the uses of

technology based instructional materials and students’ perceived interest in

Araling Panlipuan subject. Through this study, the researcher can identify

whether there’s an effect on students’ interest towards the subject by the use of

technology specifically visual and audio presentations.

4

Theoretical Framework

The study is based on the theory advocated by (Rodriguez, Nussbaum,

López & Sepúlveda, 2010:166) in which they stated that In general, ICT and

multimedia were found to be effective in teaching and produced higher levels of

performance than non-multimedia instruction. This highlights that the unique

characteristics of a subject influence the success of learning via picture or audio

presentations.

In the past 20 years of teaching History in schools, ICT with multimedia

(e.g. text, images and audio) have been used regularly to support teaching and

learning (Weiner, 1995; Van Eeden, 1999; Munro, 2000). History lessons have

become more active and learner-centred with respect to ICT integration and the

use of multimedia resources in teaching and learning at schools in South Africa.

In fact, researchers of History teaching recommend the use of a wide variety of

multimedia resource material (text, images and audio) (De Sousa & Van Eeden,

2009:18). In Social Science the representation of information by using the

visualization capabilities of video are said to be immediate and powerful. In

History lessons, multimodal information through images and animations, pictures,

including sound and speech are recommended for deep understanding. For

example, when illustrating a war, replicas of war equipment can be prepared and

geographical locations can be illustrated. Such videos consist of a high degree of

reality and visualization. Geography lessons also make use of many maps,

animations and videos. Animations, when combined with user input, enable

students to view different versions of change over time, depending on different

5

variables. Graphics provide creative possibilities for a learning experience

(Ekinci, Karakoç, Hut & Avci, 2009:95, 96, 99). The reasons why multimedia is

promoted in social science education are that it is readily available for use, helps

make remembering easy, and more information can be shared faster and in an

interesting format (Ekinci et al., 2009:12).

Conceptual Framework

This study aimed to find out the effect of technology based instructional

materials and perceived interest of grade 9 students in Araling Panlipunan

subject in Alaminos Integrated National High School. The independent variable of

the study is the technology based instructional materials while perceived interest

of grade 9 students in Araling Panlipunan subject in Alaminos Integrated National

High School is the dependent variable.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to find out the effect of technology based instructional

materials and perceived interest of grade 9 students in Araling Panlipunan

subject in Alaminos Integrated National High School during the academic

year 2019 - 2020.

Specifically, it sought answers to the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 Interest; and

1.2 Age?

2. What is the perceive level of effect of technology based instructional

materials such as visual and audio presentations in students interest in

araling panlipunan?

3. Is technology based instructional materials such as visual and audio

presentations significantly related to the students’ interest in araling

panlipunan?

Hypotheses

 Technology based instructional materials such as visual and audio

presentations do not significantly affect the students’ interest in Araling

Panlipunan subject in Alaminos Integrated National High School.

 Technology based instructional materials such as visual and audio

presentations do not significantly related the students’ interest in Araling

Panlipunan subject in Alaminos Integrated National High School.

7

Significance of the study

The people who can be benefited by this study are the teachers and the

students. In this study, they could identify the effect of technology based

instructional materials to students’ interest in Araling Panlipunan subject in

Alaminos Integrated National High School during the academic year 2019 -

2020.

This study serves as a reference guide for the researchers with the same

or related topic in their future researches. This study can help them to

develop their research and accomplish their studies easily.

The study has significance to the teachers and grade 9 students in

Alaminos Integrated National High School because this research answers

how teachnology based instructional materials such as visual and audio

presentations affect students’ interest in araling panlipunan subject.

Scope and Limitations

This study only covers the the effect of technology based instructional

materials and perceived interest of grade 9 students in Araling Panlipunan

subject in Alaminos Integrated National High School during the academic year

2019 - 2020.

It is limited only to the perception of two hundred forty (240) students

coming from Alaminos Integrated National High School. The main source of data
8

was the survey questionnaire which provides the information pertaining to

respondents’ perception.

Definitions of terms

To ensure clarity of meanings, the following words are defined

conceptually and operationally by the researcher.

Interest. It refers to the respondents’ willingness to study social studies.

Age. It refers to the year of existence of the respondents.

Technology Based Instructional Materials. It refers to multimedia presentation

used by the teachers in teaching. It includes the use of television, projectors, and

audio speakers.

Visual presentations. It refers to the instructional materials used by the

teachers such as video, power point and prezzi presentations.

Audio presentations. It refers to the instructional materials used by the teachers

such as songs and audio clips.
