How I Was Recruited:
I used to go Be Lar Mi Mosque to pray. Our village has only one mosque and the Mosque Mawlawi
[Imam] is Mawlawi Esoup (45). Although we were supposed to go 5 times a day, I could only make
it when I had free time from work.
When I was at home on 22.8.2017, around 3:00 pm, Nu Ma Mauk from Chut Pyin village gathered
us villagers and we followed him to Chut Pyin. In a house in Chut Pyin Village, there were about
100 Bengalis from Chut Pyin, Ah Htet Nan Yar, Auk Nan Yar, Be Lar Mi and Ni Lin Paw Villages.
Nu Ma Mauk said members of ARSA had already arrived at Chut Pyin village, and that they would
lead the attacks on the police outpost and that we must join them, and that we must go get ready.
On 23.8.2017, in the mosque, Mawlawi Esoup and Rawfis said that ARSA would launch attacks
very soon to occupy Maungdaw, Buthidaung, and Rathedaung Townships, and to make it an
Islamic State. They told us that all Bengalis had to join the attacks and that we must be ready. We
heard that they told other Bengalis the same things, in other mosques. They already have
received training from the ARSA militant group.
How We Attacked:
[Note: There were groups in some parts of Rathedaung and Buthidaung Townships ready to
attack that did not receive the command to attack in the early morning of 25.8.2017. They
attacked either one day or two days later]
Around 3:00 am on 27.8.2017, Saltar from Chut Pyin approached the police outpost and attacked
with two bombs. When policemen chased after him, a group of us (around 80) ambushed them
and attacked them shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’. Saltar, Nu Ma Mauk, Rawfis and Eman Hu Saung had
guns and they were shooting at the police. Policemen also shot back. I saw some Bengalis get
shot. Then we moved back and Saltar set landmines along our paths to stop the police from
following us. In our group, I saw Atta Urah Man (22 yrs) and Bawshid Ullah (30 yrs) from Ni Lin
Paw village and Hu Saung Ar Mauk (65 yrs) (they were later arrested). The attacks were led and
organized by Saltar and ARSA trainees. I did not know any other leader.
How We Fled After the Attacks:
After attacking the Chut Pyin police outpost, on the early morning of 27.8.2017, the villagers ran
away from their villages as ARSA militants burned the houses, and so we also fled from our village
around 5:00 am on 28.8.2017. Our villagers from Ni Lin Paw and Auk Nan Yar village did the
same. We crossed the trail-less mountains and arrived at Alay Than Kyaw Kha Yin Tan village.
There we saw other Bengalis who were involved in the attacks. We were waiting for boats to cross
the Naf river to Bangladesh. My sister, Habar Khatu, got on a boat with others, but we were left
waiting for more boats. [The Bangladeshi boatmen were charging exorbitant prices to cross the
wide river.]
How We Were Captured:
While we were waiting to cross to Bangladesh, our food ran out. At 9:00 am on 11.9.2017, Maw
Go La Mauk , Kay Fayad Ullah , Atta Ura Man, Bawshid Ullah and Hu Saung Ar Mauk and I went
to Alay Than Kyaw Kha Yin Tan Village to find food. Maw Go La Mauk , Kay Fayad Ullah, Atta Ura
Man and Bawshid Ullah had swords and Ha Saung Ar Mauk had a sling-shot. When we arrived at
the village, we saw a 14 year old Bengali boy. We captured him, tied him up, and threatened to kill
him if he did not get us food. While we were threatening him, around 20 villagers from Kha Yin Tan
Village, lead by the boy’s father, found us and detained us. Maw Go La Mauk was arrested right
on the spot, I, Kay Fayad Ullah , Atta Ura Man, Bawshid Ullah and Hu Saung Ar Mauk ran and
escaped. But the villagers came after us and we were later arrested on the road.
I joined the attacks because Rawfis and Mawlawi Esoup convinced and threatened us if we did not
participate. My brother-in-law Zati Hu Saung also joined the attacks together with the Auk Nan Yar
villagers. Saltar, who laid the landmines, is around 25 years old, beard, middle skin color, tough
body, about 5 feet 7 inches tall.
