Running head: SIGNATURE ASSIGNMENT 1

Signature Assignment

The chosen Peak PBL Project is the slideshow presentation as an explanatory tool to

explain how an individual must prepare to climb Mount Everest, and think about what challenges

situations they will meet. The diving question is In order to survive, what are the dangers and

necessary preparations for climbing Mount Everest? In other words, what do I need to know to

survive the climb? As noted, the presentation shall focus on various factors that can make the climb

a success from health and safety to acclimatization. There are several reasons why the project is

needed within the school. First, knowledge empowers an informed mountaineer who must possess

climbing skills but also preparatory know-how. With this, the risks involved in climbing Mount

Everest would be minimized. Second, each climb is unique and so should the training plan. The

project would help the mountaineers, especially the first-timers to customize their training plan

based on their needs and preferences. With this, the quality of the preparation will impact the

success of climbing Mount Everest.

There are a few project-based learning activities that the students are encouraged to

participate in other than being the target audience of the slideshow presentation. An informal

survey can be conducted with them as the respondents. For instance, they will be asked what

information they would want to know if they are going to climb Mount Everest. Their responses

and the subsequent analysis of the results will be reported during the presentation. In this way, the

students will have a sense of ownership of the process and the process will be participative,

providing them with the information and answers they need when they need them the most.

Learning and engagement tend to be higher when there is process ownership of sort.

Speaking of which, the impact of the project would be intense yet valuable. When it comes

to student impact, the project would directly impact up to a hundred students, which is also the

target audience of the slideshow presentation. In two to three years, a total of three hundred

students or more will be impacted by the project. When it comes to the impact of the project-based

learning activities to be implemented prior to the slideshow presentation, they would be higher

engagement. The premise is that they helped in creating the presentation, informing the content of

the presentation itself. Deep as well as sustained attention are possible with project-based learning,

which, in itself is an opportunity to learn by doing.

When it comes to the teacher impact of the project, the potential impact of the project lies

in the changes in pedagogy or the method and practice of teaching. Speaking of the teaching

practice, there is always a knowledge gap between the available information and a limited number

of those who were able to learn those pieces of information. The same gap exists in terms of piling

up new knowledge that must be spread to reach the relevant learners. While at it, there are real-

world problems that can only be addressed by discovery learning. This is the goal of this project—

to let the students themselves learn what they learn in the first place and in ways that best resonate

with their learning needs.

Finally, in terms of community impact, the project would bring together students and

teachers and other stakeholders with the same interests of climbing Mount Everest. That

cohesiveness would emphasize the need to address the learning as well as the preparatory needs

of the mountaineers regardless of whether they are first-timers or not. For the school community,

the project only strengthens the necessity of narrowing the existing knowledge gap while also

keeping up with the changes in Mount Everest expeditions themselves brought by climate change,

for instance. Also, the Nepalese government is setting new rules on a consistent basis, and so this

new information must be presented to the students or anyone who wish to climb Mount Everest.

Also the community will invite a guest speaker for our project, this would be really helpful for our

students to explore the project, after students finish this project, and their projects will be provided

to others who want to climb the Mount Everest.
