Background of the Study

Comfort rooms are considered as one of the most important facilities that every

schools should have. It is because it benefits the students, teachers as well as the staffs

in such a way that it helps in addressing the necessities of the school. However, some

comfort rooms are inconvenient to use due to unhygienic environment and lack of

sanitation and water supply. Aside from its inconvenience, there is also an insufficient

number of the said facility. Furthermore, some comfort rooms are not accessible and

functional. Inadequate comfort room facilities, poor access and supply can have wide

ranging implications for physical, emotional and psychological health. Thus, this should

be given attention to prevent the possible health risks that it may cause (Colmo, 2011).

Review of Related Literature

The comfort rooms especially in public schools nowadays is an eyesore. Some

comfort rooms are unhygienic which causes discomfort to its users. Thus, it is important

to maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of every comfort room facilities so that it gives

comfort to every user. It also must be complete with amenities and water supply for the

convenience of the said facility. Therefore, a well-sanitized and hygienic comfort room

facility that is properly managed can become a significant contributing factor in the health

of a student (Kennedy, 2011).

According to the DepEd Order no.10 s. 2016, all schools shall have adequate,

clean, functional, safe and accessible comfort rooms. There should be facilities that can

address the needs of the students, teachers and staffs that would result to a better

experience in the vicinity. In addition, according to the Philippine Sanitation Code, schools
should maintain cleanliness in the area of the school premises. Thereupon, if the

enforcement is actualized, this could prevent illness and ensure the safety of the health

of every individuals inside the campus.

The sanitation of every comfort rooms cater one of the most basic human needs.

Through the school’s proper hygiene system, complete sanitary paraphernalia such as

soaps and tissues and a vicinity with good grooming in all comfort rooms, students could

experience the optimum convenience. On the contrary, if there are inadequate facilities

and no proper sanitation and when the school heads won’t address these problems

immediately, there will be much bigger circumstances that might happen (Burton, 2013).

These circumstances pertain to the inconvenience of the students as well as the health

risks they might get from improperly sanitized comfort rooms.
