Workshop on The Internet of Things- Hands on Development Sponsored by

Centre for Advanced Research Studies at Ganpat University
(11th & 12th March, 2016)

The workshop on The Internet of Things - Hands on Development sponsored by Centre for
Advanced Research Studies, Ganpat University was held at CSE Department, GNU -Ahmedabad
on 11th & 12th March, 2016. The total 43 participants have participated in this workshop which
includes 30 faculty members, 9 post graduate students and 4 B.Tech students. The participants
were from diverse fields like computer science, electronics, biomedical, mathematics, and
computer engineering and information technology.
During these two days, various industry experts shared their insights, real life scenarios,
practical use cases and their solutions on The Internet of Things- Hands on Development.

The workshop started by providing real IoT experience at the registration desk itself – when
participants mobile flashed up with the workshop welcome screen on their arrival at the
registration desk. Session I started with keynote lecture on IoT and future of connected world by
Mr. Utpal betai, Project manager at Lets Nurture. The session was spread over first half of
session I and it provided the insights of IoT applications for smart home, smart cities, smart
lights, smart retails, energy issues, health and life style and car connect. The second half of
session I continued by Mr. Ajjay Ratnakar, predictive analytics and IoT leader, IBM. He began his
session with how the proliferation of connected devices and the Technology capabilities is
transforming the industry with cloud data. He also discussed the various areas of IoT analytics
application. The session II continued with the five Key Challenges that Enterprise IoT Innovators
are going to face. To illustrate the concept of computing more lucid, he shared videos on
technologies like SaaS, PasS and IaaS. The session was followed by videos and discussion on
IBM Watson.

In session III, he discussed real life use cases on IoT application and make the session really
interactive by providing an opportunity to suggest a solution to real life scenario. Participants
were indeed curious when they provided their mobile’s acceleration data to bluemix cloud and
updating mobile orientation live. He also demonstrated how it is possible to sense data at
remote Location using IBM IoT platform. Session IV was handled by Mr. Paresh Mayani, project
manager (android) at lets nurture. He shared an idea how BLE device called Sensor Puck can
sense and measure heartbeat and update the same information on android application. The
session also included bonus: IoT demo applications with raspberry Pi board. Day ended with the
demonstration of live Car-Connect project by personnel from Lets Nurture.

The second day of workshop was planned to provide hands on experience with IoT device and
application. Session I and II were conducted by Mr. Madhukant Patel, CTO and MD at Reve
automation, LLP. Participants were introduced to the wifi concept from a programming point of
view and its relevance to IoT device. All the participants participated in coding for accessing
light and sensing a key pressed on IoT kit though android application. Session III and session IV
was conducted by Mr. Punit Rajai, sr. android developer and project manager at mind
inventory. The session was begun with discussion on various technologies available for location
access with their limitations and application and brought forward the idea of Beacon- a
Bluetooth Low Energy(BLE) device and their applications. The participants learned creating
beacon-supported-app on the android studio to understand how beacon parameters and
beacon are accessed with android app.

At valedictory ceremony, the participants were awarded the certificates and provided with the
wifi enabled IoT kit to continue their journey with IoT. The ceremony an function came to an
end with a group photo session.
