Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM

Introduction

In this new era of technology, individual lifestyle become easier. Everyone

engages on it in everyday life like watching, chatting, gaming, downloading and

searching. Most people’s lives are rotating in online world because technology right

now can do many things, it can relieve tiredness, can kill boredom, makes work faster

and it really can entertain people, especially when it comes to gaming.

Game is one of the most greatest technology industry right now. Gaming has a

various types, the Play Station, Xbox, as well as online gaming. Among these games

the most popular type is online gaming. From virtual worlds to multiplayer games,

there’s no limit to the types of games that can be played online. Online gaming can

refer to any type of game that someone can play through the internet or over a

computer network where multiple players are in different locations around the world.

In most cases, online games are freeware programs that can be used for an unlimited

time and are available for free. Because of its popularity in modern societies, online

games target a variety of people in different ages, the young children, teenagers,

adults and the most are the students.

Students now are very addicted in online gaming like Mobile Legends, Clash of

Clans, Dota, and many more. These games makes the student feel better, happy, and

now it serves as a hobby. During school hours, students tends to feel stressed due to

loads of school works and through playing it will relieve feeling. It is undeniably

questionable that playing online games among student provide something that no one
2

can give. According to some researches it is beneficial. It enables the mind of the

players to be more active, especially those puzzle-based games. Furthermore, it helps

the player to come up with decisions in tight situations, especially those adventure

games that keep the players to be alert, active and strategic.

Students' learning takes place unexpectedly, but the inappropriate usage of

playing online games also leads in some problems such as being distracted in school.

Further, it is where the attention of the student were divided that even the health and

social life is unknowingly affected.

Several studies in psychology have found out that increased time spent on the

online games can lead to negative impact on a person's ability to communicate

appropriately face-to-face with friends, peers, family members including parents and

especially in academic performance.

The increasing prevalence of computer games among student made many

researchers to determine the effects of online games to student. The researcher will

conduct a study to investigate the effects of online games addiction among Senior

High students.
3

Statement of the Problem

This aims to determine the effects of online games to the Senior High Student

of Salcedo National High School.

1. How often do they play online games?

2. How did these students become addicted to online games?

3. What are the implications of playing computer games in gamer’s social life?

Scope and Limitation

This study is confine in determining the effects of online games among the

senior high student of Salcedo National High School Poblacion Norte, Salcedo, Ilocos

Sur during the school year 2019-2020. This study will involve 5 Senior High Student

from Grade 12 GAS students. This study will commence from August 2019 to October

2019.

Significance of Study

This study aims to determine and contribute on the effects of Online Games

among senior high student.

The result of this study is important and will be beneficial to the following:

Student. This study will help them to realize the effects of online games to them and

it will help and motivate them to avoid or stop their addiction on online games.

Parents. This study will serve as their guidance in approaching their children and in

taking good care to them.

Teacher. This study will them in analyzing what are the problems of student in studying

and it will help them in advising or teaching the student to become better.
4

Administrator. This study will serve as their guide on how they will approach the

student and on how they will discipline them.

Review Related Literature

Game addiction is getting spread widely and uncontrollable. Gaming addiction

became a mysterious problem which is still difficult to treated and avoid.

There are two types of gaming, “excessive gaming” and “addictive gaming”

these two types of gaming is different from each other; the difference between

“excessive gaming and “addictive gaming” is that two gamers may play for an identical

number of hours each day, but their psychological motivation and the meaning that

gaming has within their lives can be very different. Gaming addiction is how much the

negatively impacts other areas of life, not by how much time is spent playing (Griffiths,

M et al. 2010).

Bachhuber and Saulnier (2012), said that playing online games is an effective

way of enhancing a student’s reading comprehension. Through formative testing, they

found out that online games can help a student to improve his/her grammar,

vocabulary and comprehension because they can have an interactive way to learn

English or any other language.

Meanwhile Inwon Kang, 2011 stated that online gaming addiction is not that

far from drug addiction. Both are searching for a way to make they feel better. The lure

of a fantasy world is especially pertinent to online role-playing games. These are

games in which a player assumes the role of a fictional character and interacts

with other players in a virtual world. An intelligent child who is unpopular at school can

feel dominant in the game. The virtual life becomes more appealing than real life. Too

much gaming may seem relatively harmless compared with the dangers of a drug

overdose, but experts say video game addiction can ruin lives. Children who play four
5

to five hours per day have no time for socializing, doing homework, or playing sports

leaving little time for normal social development. Internet addiction gives the gamer to

the unique psychological properties which is the users increase their use of these

internet services, the utility they gain from each usage does not diminish, leading not

only to self-destructive addiction but also to social ills. When a problem, playing video

games can interfere with real-life obligations such as work, and players can end up

lying about playing video games. The study found that “problematic” video game use

can have similar effects as other addictive activities, such as abusing alcohol.

Other case studies have reported adverse effects of playing video games,

including auditory hallucinations, enuresis, encopresis, wrist pain, neck pain, elbow

pain, tenosynovitis, hand-arm vibration syndrome, repetitive strain injuries, peripheral

neuropathy, and obesity. Some of these adverse effects seem to be rare and many

resolve when the patients no longer play the games. Furthermore, case reports and

case series cannot provide firm evidence of cause and effect or rule out other

confounding factors. On balance, given that video game playing is highly prevalent

among children and adolescents in industrialized countries, there is little evidence that

moderate frequency of play has serious acute adverse effects from moderate play.

Adverse effects, when they occur, tend to be relatively minor and temporary, resolving

spontaneously with decreased frequency of play. More evidence is needed on

excessive play and on defining what constitutes excess in the first place. There should

also be long term studies of the course of video game addiction.

Due to excessive use of computer games there is effect in their personal traits

like anxiety, sensation seeking, neuroticism, and aggression which are the symptoms

that a person is under the development of gaming addiction (Mehroof, M et al. 2010).

Brain is also affected in computer addiction; regions of the brain associated with
6

cravings in substance abuse also appear to be activated in gaming addicts when they

view images of video games (Ko, C et al. 2010).

David (2013) stated that the addiction in playing online game is believed to drive

someone to extreme circumstances so much so that from some evidence

demonstrated parents tend to believe that their child is in a position where their health

and future is a worry.

According to Bushman (2013) the more you play, the more aggressive you

become; a long term experimental study of cumulative violent video game effects on

hostile expectations and aggressive behavior, violent video game increase

aggression.

Bonald (2010) stated that the addicted gamer often isolates him/herself from

others, ignores more important responsibilities, and often obsessed with obtaining

higher status/ rankings/ achievements in his/her favorite computer game. According

to the DSM-IV (the current manual for classifying emotional, psychological, and mental

disorder) no. Although there have been calls from some mental health professionals

(and parents) to recognize computer game addiction is a “real” disorder, it has not

been granted official diagnostic status.

Rutger (2014) the benefits of playing video games, video games are controlled

training regimes delivered highly motivating behavioral contexts because behavior

changes arise from brain changes and the performance improvements are parallel by

enduring physical and functional neurological remodeling.

Thomas and Martin (2010) note that their assessment for computer game and

internet addiction were adapted from pathological gambling as “no empirically tested

measure for behavior addiction was available in 2004 at the time od data collection.

Chapter III

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter presents the results and discussion of the data gathered. Presentation of

data follows the sequence in the statement of the problem found in the study.

1. How often do they play online games?

Because of the enjoyment that online games gave, most of our

respondents tends to play 1 to 2 hours per day. During their vacant time

in schooldays and when they are bored during weekends. They play

online games because it will makes them relax, happy, not bored and it

is their time to have fun with their online friends.

2. How did these students become addicted to online games?

Based in our respondent answers, most of them started playing online

games since they are in younger years as they are influenced by their

friends. At first they just play online games when they have load. But as

time passes they become more and more active playing online games,

they want more time to play because in playing it makes them happy, it

enjoys them and it is the time where they can socialize and bond with

their friends. And until now, still they are addict in playing online games.

3. What are the implications of playing online games in gamers social life?

As they play online games they feel relieved. They can socialize with

their online friends. They can gather some information through playing

with their online friends. As they play online games their relationship with

their parents are still the same. Though it makes them lazy, and got

scolded by their parents sometimes, they can still do their work. They do

multitasking, they do time managing. But as they play online games their
10

sleeping time was affected. They sleep mostly at 12:00 am. And they

woke up late in the morning, and this affect their study and health.
11

Chapter IV

SUMMARY, FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary, findings, conclusions and recommendations of

the study.

Summary

This study aims to determine the effect of online games among senior high student of

Salcedo National High School.

In the conduct of this study, there were 5 students-respondents of the senior high

student of Salcedo National High School who serve as the respondents. The study uses

convenience sampling that involves choosing respondents at the convenience of the research.

The questionnaire was adopted from the study of “Gamespot, 2003: Questions for a research

paper on video games” is use to determine the effects of online games among senior high

student school GAS student-respondents.

The research was conducted at the classroom of two section of senior high school

GAS students on October 2019.

The data were interpreted and analyzed by the researcher to determine the effects of

Online game among senior high student of Salcedo National High School.

Findings

Based on the result of the study the following findings were presented on the profile of

the students-respondents in terms of age the usual age of the respondents is 18 years old and

all of them are male.

12

Based on the results among the five respondents they are using their phones playing

online games as to make them feel relieve, happy and relax. And by using it they can socialize

and communicate with their online friends. As they play they, they mostly consumed up to 1

to 2 hours per day, but during weekends they spent more time. By playing, their parents scold

them cause it makes them lazy sometimes. But they can still do their assignments, projects,

and activities. And their health got affected because they stay up late at night and wake up

late. Their body was affected.

Conclusion

Based on the findings, the following conclusions were formulated. The research

focuses only on the senior high GAS student so must of the student-respondents age was 18

years old. All of them are male. There are 3 grade 12 diamond and 2 grade 12 jacinth.

It shows by that playing online games really affects them in their studies, health, family

and friends. So we must avoid playing to avoid getting addicted.

Recommendation

Based on the conclusions, the following recommendation were advanced by

researcher.

1. Administrators should find way to help student’s situation in the effects of online games to

the students.

2. Teachers should encourage and advice their students to lessen their playing.

3. Parents should look on the doings of their children and educate them properly.

4. Students must think what they are doing and think what they must do.
13
