Project Narrative

Learning Goals and Outcomes

How can we build a financial plan for people to help them achieve their financial goals?

Is the driving question for the students to understand at the end of the project. Some of the

essential questions the students must consider during the project are. Does our solution to the

financial goal make sense to the problem at hand? Did the research our group did help lead to the

goal? Does our solution to the financial goal have a reasonable amount of time it could be

accomplished in?

Some of the learning goals are to see if the students can identify what parts of their

financial plan is needed for the goal to be researched. ISTE standard- 3. Research and

information fluency, Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. c.

Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific

tasks. The math standard this question goes with is A2.MP.4 Model with mathematics. Is to see

if the model you have can be improved or changed for the betterment of the project. Another

outcome is for the students to understand how big the world of finances can be and how easy a

mistake can hurt them. ISTE standard- 4. Critical thinking, problem solving, and decision

making, Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve

problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources. c. Collect

and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions. The students will need to

be able to use their best judgment to see if certain plans of action will help or hurt the financial

goal.

The project is structured to have collaboration, research, communication, creativity, and

innovation. The students will need to collaborate the research that each group member found for

the financial goal. Then after creating and innovation different idea and plans to reach the

financial goal. The group member will then communicate that information to their clients for

them to have what is needed to reach their goal.

Description of Learning Activities

Some of the daily learning activities are going to be more based on collaborating with

group members to see if the direction and steps for their financial plan was needed for the result

to work. This is a key strategy of Marzona the concept of cooperative learning and how students

can feed off each other to progress the project forwards. They will also be writing some exit

tickets to see how they progressed during that day as a group. So, see what step they took and

some of the idea the groups talked about but then ultimately didn’t end up using. When working

on group project where the students drive the work, having discussion about things that didn’t

work helps spark new ideas that will help the students. Having a collaborative talk with in groups

and personal talk by writing things down for an exit ticket is another way of different forms for

students to get their feedback back to me as the teacher. Some students are shy so adding a way

for them to communicate without being forced to talk in groups all the time.

I want the students to be able to explore all the facets of developing a financial plan. It

helps to be in groups to be able to bounce off ideas of what works and what doesn’t. With the

topic on how to solve a financial goal being so big, having the time to research and discover new

ways to find the plan to reach the goal is key for the students. I want the students to be able have

enough time during class to being able to research these concepts to the fullest. Be able to build a

financial plan that can help them during this project and outside the project as well. Most groups

will probably need to do some of the work outside of class, like finalizing their plan. The idea

was to be able to help guide them with any of their questions so I can’t ask too much to be done

outside of class. Having the google doc for everyone to keep all the information on helps add

time for the students that want to work on it more outside of class to be able to do so.

Assessment

The formative assessments will be an exit ticket on a few of the days to see what the

students and their groups are learning towards their plan. There will also be a day while each

group is working that I will go around and have conference with each of the groups to see how

the projects are going and help steer any groups that are not on target to get back on target. One

of the last days before presenting the results to their clients each group will present to one other

group and help get peer review on their plan to see if the other students could follow and suggest

any changes that other group thinks will help your results be better. This all leads into the

summative assessment of presenting the financial plan to their clients and show them all the

work and knowledge they have gathered to help their clients.

Sustaining The Project and Innovation

Technology

The tech being used is not going to be overwhelming but will help the students out to find

the financial plan to reach the financial goal. They will be using a google doc so each member of

the group can add any information they deemed worthy and have all the information within their

grasp. The computers for all the research will also be used during the project. The groups will

need to decide how they want to present their information. They could use power point or have

all the information in a portfolio. Any way the students want to present the information if it is a

financial plan for a certain financial goal.

After Proposal Period

I plan to keep this project alive by being able to show that this project can be used more

than just in a math classroom. You can make these same ideas be used in a research paper for a

science or English classroom as well. The result will be different but the outcome of having the

students be able to have more control of how the information will be presented and what is most

important to them. This project is helpful in a lot more then just the classroom. It helps students

dig deeper into finances and the real world that waits them after school. Being more prepared for

the outside world and having a teacher guide you if you are stuck or made a grave mistake, is a

nice guide to have. Making a mistake in the class is a lot better than making a financial mistake

that can take years to fix. We want our students to be more prepared to handle the world that

awaits.

Innovation

The innovation of the project is crazy high. In the world of finances there are many ways

to reach a certain financial goal. In the project the students will need to research and find the best

path needed to reach their goals. The project is left open for the students to be able to dig deep

into their own problem-solving minds to find the solution to their goal. This will be able to help

transform students learning by allowing them to find and search for an answer instead of being

told how to do so. As a teacher you must be open to anything being a possible answer to the

problem unless it’s not even on topic. You can’t have a locked view on the outcome.
