Pinning Governor Shaft

Isolated failures have been reported involving the
governor shaft moving or coming out of the crankcase,
and the resulting damage caused by the governor gear
dropping off.

A .002”press-fit holds the governor shaft in position in

the crankcase bore, with the retainer installed as a
secondary stop. Retention and fit are unaffected
through the normal temperature cycles of the engine,
however abnormal thermal expansion of the crankcase
due to overheating from blocked cooling surfaces can
allow the stub shaft to loosen.

If failure occurs in which the crankcase is still usable,

but the press-fit is no longer adequate, the governor Figure 1.
shaft may be pinned in position as outlined below,
avoiding unneccessary short block replacement. 3. Locate and center punch a mark over the

customer’s responsibility.

To Pin Governor Shaft In Position:

Use a new governor shaft if required and make sure
corresponding bore in crankcase is clean and dry.

1. Apply Loctite® No. 609 to the larger O.D. of

governor shaft and inside the shaft bore of
crankcase.

2. Install governor shaft, with small diameter facing

in, to a depth of .285 in. (7.1 mm) from the outer
edge of crankcase. See Figure 1.

Depending on the press-fit of the two parts, allow Figure 2.

4. Use a 3/32”or 1/8”cobalt or carbide tipped drill
bit and carefully drill about halfway into the
case-hardened governor shaft. See Figure 3. Do
not allow the drill bit to walk or wander, elongating
the hole. Thoroughly clean away all chips.

6. Install a new retainer against the governor shaft

from the outside and perform balance of repair.

5. Install a 3/4”- 7/8”roll pin into the drilled hole.

See Figure 4. Apply a small amount of Loctite®
No. 609 if desired. Any roll pin left exposed may
be trimmed off.
